PS4 BETA firmware 5.00 out today

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
I don't understand why Sony has no desire to even try and make big leaps forward with their UI.

This is their 5.0 update? Really?
I honestly think it's a UI/OS limitation.
They can't drastically change or add stuff because it'll break it or something.

Probably why they keep making shitty little changes that make it worse like the TV/Video section and Hidden Games sections. I'd love to know which intern made those changes because they're horrible.

Plus most things that could be built in like the media player are apps.

I have 2 spare codes for the beta if anyone wants one, or should I just post them in this thread and first come first serve.

Edit: UK beta codes

People seem really hung up on '5.00'. I kind of am/was too but honestly just getting the UI in a state where it isn't hitching all the time is absolutely massive.

It'll start stuttering soon enough. The console rebuilt part of the database and maybe did other optimization tasks after updating. If it did too on previous updates that would mean the amount of "ok but seriously, now it's smooth!" post after every (big?) update.

---

Don't get me wrong though, I agree that the QoL changes are important and always welcomed but some of those should have been there in the beginning or when they made the change (like the clock in the quick menu or the option to let you change the notification color that they changed for no reason)

Why do people constantly want the UI to change its minimalist & smooth the way it is

Agreed (although for some it seems to get stuck on a few icons). Really don't like UI changes for the sake of changing the UI, it's getting exhausting with the Xbox One UI.

I have no clue. Why mess with what's not broken already? UI is perfect to me at this point and the additions to the quick menu make this even more amazing.

I never expected 5.0 to be much with people holding out hope for downsampling for all games across with the Pro. MS announced that as a feature for the Xbox One X while Sony was most likely already testing this update for the past two months internally.

I say give it till the next big update for that now that they see the Xbox doing it and seeing the demand.

Like I said yesterday I've uninstalled it and my PS4PRO runs better, the only noticeable difference is the notification has gone back to white(I changed it to Black)
Seriously Sony needs to get their shit together.
I've had the PS4 since launch and now have a PS4Pro I've been in every beta and the only things that have made a difference is wallpapers and External storage.
The media player was just an app
Compared to PS3 which already had more features at launch it's pathetic.
And the best thing they added they didn't even reach half arse status because it's worse and that PS2 emulation

No supersampling for 1080p Pro users?
We got 1080p60fps twitch streaming
Great for people watching you streaming...pretty useless for us.
Seriously I just want PSX and PS2 emulation done properly.
I recently booted up Vagrant Story on my 3 year old tablet and it looks fantastic still with all the graphics enhancements in HD.
The PS4 can do this no problem, what the fuck is wrong with Sony.

So nothing then.

"Friends stuff!" - I don't really play online anymore

"Messages!" - see above

"Notifications!" - meh

"Different colour alert boxes!" - seriously?

They don't want to just give it to us. They want to monetize it and make us pay for it, but then there is lack of support because ps4 only has one ps1 classic as far as I'm aware, and it seems support for ps2 classics has ceased entirely. I tried ps now one time and hated it. I have decent internet, not the best, and it said my connection wasn't good enough for it. Fuck that. It's mainly why I still have my ps3 hooked up so I can play older titles when I want to.

I redeemed my code through the link in my email. The site tells me I can find the download in the "media" tab of my account dashboard. But it's not there. It's listed in my purchases, but can't download from there. No notification on either of my PS4s. Next time I'll be sure to redeem the code on my PlayStation instead.

Check for system updates in settings.

So it seems there were some drive format changes, or at least it feels like there were. When it was doing the update it had the usual upgrade system thing, then it had updating file system, then it did the other usual rebuilding of the database.

I also had some game updates to process and saw what others mentioned about it having a "copying" phase before installing. Interestingly, this was after the download had completed rather than before when it used to allocate downloads. I'm wondering if the file system upgrade allowed for better journaling control to reduce/eliminate the extra space for updates and installations being needed.

I also noticed that once the system fully loaded after the cold boot, then starting from rest mode, that things came up much faster. Maybe they implemented an OS-level cache for thumbnails? Hell, I want to try playing Nier Automata on this PS4 now to see if it sped up HDD access to reduce the hitching it gets.

Should try bringing the Quick menu up during Call of duty games to see if it's still slow. Only games this happens on for me.

Is Nier installed on a external drive? Cuz i get hitching and stuttering from my external drive on many games. The worst case is Not A Hero, but I also get it in MKX, DS3's and Mafia III's cutscenes, in Ghost Recon Wildlands, it causes the audio to cut out for like a sec and there are more. But all those problems disappear the moment I move the game to the internal drive. Its a Seagate ST4000LM016 4TB and i heard a lot of people mention this in the 4.5's beta

Also, I which that when you are like in the Quick Menu for example, that when you are on the top choice "Sound/Devices" that you could push up on it and it go down to the bottom choice "Customize". Or that if i push left on the PS Plus symbol in the top right of the main menu it came out on the right side on "power".

And I said it before and I'll say it again. The Quick Menu always defaults to "Notifications" now instead of the last thing you had it on like before. The Old way was better.
