Rumor: No Mother 3 localization happening anymore, Rhythm Heaven franchise dead

The dots are that Reggie can now say he gave Metroid fans what he wanted and oh well about Mother 3.

Reggie has given so much false hope about Mother 3 for 10+ years and people keep falling for it. Stop getting your hopes up.

Yeah. Look at all this hope.

Wow, so much hope!

Compare statements like that which have been made for the past ten years with the ones made this January:

Yeah, I'd say there's plenty of reason that some fans have gotten their hopes up for the first time in over a decade when you compare what's being said. I know people love to say that Reggie always gives non-answers that never pan out to anything, but that's been demonstrated as recently as this year's E3 to be untrue.

Hey I'm pretty sure Tsunku's throat issues aren't going to stop Rhythm Heaven. Megamix came out in Japan AFTER he lost his voice so I'd say it's still possible. He also took part in the second-to-last Iwata Asks where he performed it by exchanging written responses with Iwata.

I hope you are right, Rhythm Tengoku series is just too good.

After reading the article, this seems more like opinion and speculation based on the current environments surrounding each franchise and less like rumor.

I mostly trust Holmes, but I feel like these are very easy predictions to just make up and probably be right. The source could be bullshitting.

Wario seems to be put out to pasture, too. His games were a mainstay for Nintendo portables for years, but now the 3DS is on its deathbed without a single WarioWare/Land/etc. game to its name.

Seems like its more analysis than rumor. Mother 3 will eventually make it, these things are cyclical.

Rhythm Heaven is still massively popular in Japan and I doubt costs much to produce so I'm gonna call bullshit on that rumor.

If western sales were a deciding factor, the series would've been dead since the DS game.

I don't think it's worth getting too upset over unsubstatiated Nintendo rumours unless Ubisoft are somehow involved.

Edit: I could see Rythmn Heaven switching to mobile only though, but even that's not a cancelation.

"The core team behind the Rhythm Heaven series has more or less disbanded, and the last time anyone at NoA considered translating Mother 3, they shelved the game as soon as they got to the Magypsies. That was a while ago now, and if anything, management has gotten even less adventurous since then. Depicting Trans characters in a way that would likely insult both the political Left and the Right in the U.S., is the last kind of attention that Nintendo wants for themselves in 2017. They want nothing to do with those kinds of headlines and potential protests."
It can't possibly be that serious. Gonna call bulldog on that one.

The fan translation is excellent, i finished the game last week and its one of the best RPGs i played.

I guess im just really slowpoke, because i never once thought about the magypsyes as trans characters lol. I really just considered them a race of magypsyes.

Is this the only reason for Nintendo not translate Mother 3?

I doubt that the issue with the Magypsies — if, hypothetically speaking, they're inhibiting localizing the title — is that they're transgender. Probably more to do with something like ...

PUVJWR1.png

Their whole character is really outlandish, although I personally think they're very funny and warm-hearted. There's also the "oxygen machines" underwater.

That said, this article doesn't seem that credible to me. But it'll be a nice surprise if Mother 3 ever does get localized.

The oxygen machines i think are far more of a problem, tbh.

Sounds like bullshit. I don't believe for a second NoA would be so tone-deaf as to continue to tease MOTHER 3 if it had been shelved years ago. They teased it as recently as this last E3.

Are you the author of this article or is your username a coincidence?

Haven't been asked this in a while. I don't know if "coincidence" is the right word, Jonathan Holmes and I have the same last name and the same first initial. But no, direct all inquiries meant for the Destructoid guy elsewhere.

Speaking of user names, I love that episode of Clerks.

If Magypsies are the real issue, how are other Japanese games/media received by the west/US with things like One Piece games and the show etc? The okama stereotypes? Too niche to cause a storm I suppose?

Makes me think they won't cause that much issues as Mother 3 is pretty niche itself, a game made over a decade ago for an old system.

Next Direct:

"Mother 3 coming to North America!"

Yup. This is just misdirection. Everyone gets bummed out, they make the official announcement and everyone gets happy.

Remember those almost certain rumors about BotW not making it for the Switch launch, and then at the very end of the last trailer they surprised everyone with the revelations that it WAS going to release with the Switch?

That's what Nintendo is doing now. Feeding false info to the rumor mongers.

Rhythm Heaven games are cheap to make and pull decent sales numbers. I fully expect to see a Switch version within the next 2 years.

"It was actually back in 2015 that they first started telling me that Mother 3 would not be leaving Japan and that the Rhythm Heaven series was on indefinite hold. The thing is though, these kinds of decisions can be reversed at any time, so I've been holding out hope that as Nintendo gets their feet on the ground with the Switch, they may have a change of heart. It wasn't until yesterday that I finally let those hopes go, when I heard from yet another source that I should give up on both franchises for good."

  • This decision was initially made in 2015
  • They release Rhythm Heaven Megamix on 3DS in 2016 anyway (3DS being pretty late in its life by then already).
  • Megamix sells reasonably well
  • Nintendo has very succesfull launch of Switch in 2017
  • Rhythm Heaven franchise is dead
Makes no sense at all to me. I hope it's not true, because Rhythm Heaven is sweet.
This post basically nails it.

I wouldn't be surprised if we got another Rhythm Heaven game for the Switch in the near future. The Joy-Cons would come in handy for 2-player.

Umm I can kinda see the mother 3 localization being cancelled at the most, but why would they end rhythm heaven? Most the entries in the franchise sold a ton in Japan at least. Inclined not to believe any of this

Such a good post, especially the video links. I bookmarking this for the future.

Even knowing this is only a rumor my stomach dropped and I feel genuinely bummed out right now about Rhythm Heaven.

I love the series so much. No game has brought me as much joy as Rhythm Heaven Megamix did when it came out. Someone please console me and tell me it isn't over... =[

Please explain why you think this would make any sort of sense lmao

I had meant in a localization sense. Perhaps once work on Mother 3 shut down, those translators were sent to work on localization work for Samus Returns, since that's clearly the title coming sooner, to make sure it gets out the door as quick as possible.

I'll buy Mother 3 if I can if it comes to Switch someday, but the localization is installed as a channel on my Wii U for now, where it belongs.

Also a great point. Before the decision to begin a localization takes place, potential problems are identified. That we have two diametrically opposed rumors (one from Eurogamer and Laura Kate Dale that a localization has already finished, and this new one from Destructoid that states that a localization was canned after finding out about one specific detail) is just odd.

Okay, how would you change the phrasing in the article to fit M3 localisation getting struck during this problem identification phase without significantly expanding it? Because I think it fits as is. They looked at potential problems and found one.

Note: this is specifically about this particular argumentation.

all my loli wolf companions are so moe
Sounds more like some guy getting random shit from the internet and trying to pass then off as rumors.

So here's a clarification for Rhythm Heaven.

A franchise doesn't "die" because its creators are disbanded or anything. With that said, we might not get RH anymore because Tsunku♂ (the guy responsible for most of the songs in the game) has throat cancer. He had his vocal cords removed from what I remember, but we have no idea what's the future of the franchise.

The last song he made was I'm a Lady Now in MegaMix from what I recall.

One mistake doesn't negate the tons of rumors they digged right. And they only got one piece of information wrong out of everything. Nice cherrypicking. If you're willing to disregard Eurogamer for Stars, then you have to disregard this rumor for the tons of bollocks Destructoid has spouted.

Point is, they are far from infallible. They seriously doubled down on that one, too.

Regardless, this current rumor reads like corporate fanfiction, and doesn't seem to fully align with facts, so it is rather dubious from the outset.

I don't really believe the rumor at all from the perspective of his reported information being accurate, but I am and will continue to firmly be in the "I'll never believe that Mother 3 is getting localized unless they officially confirm it with a hard date" camp. There's more subject matter in the game than the Magypsies that I can understand Nintendo finding problematic, and I don't believe the issues and the cost of localizing the game would be all that worth what they view as the potential return.

The Rhythm Heaven part I just don't buy at all. I think it's possible that it might be a while before we see any movement on the series again just due to other things getting priority among Nintendo's development staff, but as far as I'm aware the series has always been at least moderately successful. If anything I'd target it as more of a late-release thing in the Switch's lifespan, something that can be made relatively quickly while teams start to gear up for whatever hardware comes next.

After releasing EarthBound Beginnings on Wii U, I see the whole "Localizing Mother3 for the west" is just a matter of time.

If this was something more than the opinion of an employee, I'd go into as significantly more detail as needed to make it seem as though a genuine attempt was made and that he knows the specifics. If not, then it's total conjecture on the part of the source and cannot be taken as even remotely iron-clad.
