So that weird Barca deadline has passed. Wonder what kind of fuckery we can expect this week..

I wonder if Phil is going to try and ignore that this ever happened or of he'll make a statement or something to get back in the fan's good books. Hoping that this is over, and we start hearing about moving for some new targets.

Okay, FootieGAF. I moved to England too old to have picked up the kind of blood and guts fanatic association with an individual team, but I like the sport and want to have a better investment in it locally. How do I pick a team to follow?

Arsenal and Mexico sure love exiting in the round of 16.
Arsenal was really unlucky with their opponents though.
IIRC they played against Bayern/Barcelona for 5 years straight in the Round of 16. Every major club would have had his problems there.

They are still bad tho

The quality of teams in EPL has increased and top teams have a lot tougher games than before.

Its only really starting to recover as the quality really dropped around 2012/13 to 2015/16 and many teams still look very poor. It could still be more of a case of the middle catching up with top because the quality of football still hasn't improved . Watching the Arsenal, United and Liverpool games the last two weekends the utter lack of technical ability in all areas of the game is crazy, especially as they are considered some of the best teams in the league. This might make for entertaining games but the quality is so so bad. Only teams that have shown it regularly but still not constantly have been Chelsea and City and they were both very poor in this regard at the start of last season and have off days (Chelsea last weekend). All the players in all teams have the ability but its rarely on display, Arsenal only seem to be able to maintain it as a team for a max of twenty mins. Watch a mid table La Liga, Serie A or Bundisliga and the technical ability is always there.

Where do you live, could look at all the teams close by? Alternatively watch a few matches and see what players or playstyles you have an affinity to. I got my support via my Dad so I've never had to choose...

Also whatever team you end up supporting, you must decide whether you're #WengerIn or #WengerOut

Ipswich Town always win. Support them. Don't worry about the "glory hunter" jibes you'll inevitably receive.

Whatever you do, do not support Liverpool. It's a neverending cycle of pain and disappointment from which there is no escape. Just start watching the games on TV or in the pub and you will gravitate towards a team eventually. I myself had no choice, my entire area was full of Liverpool fans, to the point where wearing a Utd jersey would be considered extremely dangerous.

I wonder if Phil is going to try and ignore that this ever happened or of he'll make a statement or something to get back in the fan's good books. Hoping that this is over, and we start hearing about moving for some new targets.

Suarez was forgiven almost instantly, and he was serving a ban for biting someone at the time as well. The second he cuts in from the left and bends one around the keeper, no one will care anymore.

Wasn't the source for this Ballague? That guy is so full of shit, I don't know why anyone takes him seriousy. He spouts all the same nonsense as any ITK, just in a foreign accent.

Look for the closest team in your neighbourhood and go support them. Seriously. Support your local team.

Premier League is fun to follow from a distance. Ticket prices are ridiculously expensive and the atmosphere at Premier League clubs is mostly dead anyway.

Ibrahimovic wants one last stab at that English Premier League medal

Manchester United expect Zlatan Ibrahimovic to sign a new contract to stay at Old Trafford as early as this week, sources have told ESPN FC.

Free agent Ibrahimovic, 35, is recovering from a knee ligament injury sustained in a Europa League match against Anderlecht in April which was expected to keep him out until 2018.

The new contract will be announced earlier than anticipated due to the former Sweden international's quick recovery.

Watzke also fired shots at Barcelona. Says Dembele didn't show up to training a day after they had a meeting with Barca and couldn't strike a deal.

How rotten is Barcelona right now?

“On Wednesday [last week] we met with Barcelona’s officials. Our positions were very far away from each other. Then, on Thursday, he did not show up at the training.

“The timing of these events is very curious. You don’t believe a 20-year-old will refuse to go to training without his possible new club liking that?

This is what they always do, they have their current players tap up their targets, submit a lowball offer and then rely on the player to force a transfer. How often have we seen one of their players saying 'X is good enough for Barcelona' etc. Say what you want about Real Madrid, at least they usually just pay up.

It was pretty clear beforehand. Like why would a 20yo do something like this right after his potentially new club failed in the negotiations with his current club? You can't tell me that Barcelona didn't know about this or that Dembele decided this by himself.

They can fuck right off. I'm so pissed at this shitty club.

Be like the others ITT and support which ever team is top of the league rn. I think it's Man Utd.

Seems to me almost half of the thread is Liverpool fans, who aren't gonna be anywhere close to the top of the league.

Of course they knew, they are doing the exact same thing with Coutinho right now.

If there is a team within travelling distance of you that you can regularly go to (or watch on tv) with family/friends then pick them. I can imagine supporting a team without having anyone else to at the same time is pretty dull.

Also, if you want watching matches to be remotely entertaining then don't pick West Brom, Burnley, or Stoke (if you want to watch a premier league team).

Also don't pick Manchester United, just because

I can't accuse any Liverpool fans of being glory supporters, that's for sure.

Considering the recent years you can't say that about Man Utd fans either though.

This is what they always do, they have their current players tap up their targets, submit a lowball offer and then rely on the player to force a transfer. How often have we seen one of their players saying 'X is good enough for Barcelona' etc. Say what you want about Real Madrid, at least they usually just pay up.

C'mon now. Real Madrid does the same thing. They did with Ronaldo for years. They did with Bale. Lukaku in June already knew where he was going to play next season according to him and Everton only agreed to sell him in July. How the fuck would he know that if he couldn't talk with other clubs beforehand?

The problem with Barça is that they go the extra yard with their tapping of players. They make them really force the transfer by acting like dicks while making subpar offers to their clubs. "Hey I just unsettled your player. Care to accept an offer for him worth less €30M than what he's worth? You have until Sunday!". If the club doesn't accept, they just go to the player again and say "See your club don't accept anything. You need to act more like a dick than before". Add a couple of SPORT and Mundo Deportivo headlines and you have the perfect storm.

Yea this is pretty much my point. Everyone does it, but Barca are by far the worst, and their supreme arrogance makes them all the more irritating.

If you have a thin skin but a desire for trophies you pick Man Utd. If you have a thick skin and can take an avalanche of banter along with continual underachieving you pick Arsenal or Liverpool. If you want all of the prior to gang up and hate you for everything you pick Tottenham or Chelsea. Then if you want the whole league to hate you, including all the people who hate each other, you pick Man City.

So, pick Southampton or Bournemouth.

LOL I'm not saying it about anybody, friend, but I'm pretty sure Utd won 2 trophies last season and the FA Cup the season before.

You forgot the legendary Community Shield! How could you? Don't you remember Mou making the number 3 sign at the Europa League celebration last year?

My local is Oxford United, languishing in L1, which is fun but the low quality of the matches can make it hard to enjoy consistently.

Big game vs City tonight.

Baldiola you goin down just like last time

Last season

1-1 draw away
4-0 win home

Needless to say we have a good record against Man City

Hope Koaman doesn't play conservative. Also interesting to see if Siggurdsson and Tom Davies play.

Oxford had a great season last season. the recruitment this summer didn't help much, but they are way better than what the table is suggestion at the moment. Not a bad team to support Imho

I am confused: is Marvin Johnson still at Oxford or did he move to Birmingham? Very important player to keep

Reading's only a short train ride away if you want something a bit more glamorous.

My sincere apologies. I guess Arsenal can end their season now and call it a huge success having won that most prestigious of trophies.

The People's Club, Everton.

Go for Everton. Nobody thinks they can win anything, they're generally around the European places and they have the legend that is Wayne Rooney playing for them. Winner winner chicken dinner.

Pick whoever you gravitate toward after watching some matches or match of the day. Arsenal won lots of fans with beautiful football and winning things, these days they at least generally play good football. You might like that part of it. Or you might like smaller teams that can take a good scalp once in a while.

Just don't take it seriously. It's a game. When you lose you'll get bants and if you win and you're a United fan you'll still get bants.

Don't become a whiny cunt who gets that angry at a result of either your own team or another team that it ruins your weekend. Football is incredible and the emotion it can bring to the surface can be huge, but when it's all over, it's over. Enjoy it!

This is pretty good advice too. I genuinely do get a bit jealous of people I know who can just watch football for the entertainment, without the biases that come with picking a team.

Well you can embrace your Welsh heritage and support either Swansea or Cardiff?

Alternatively you can support David Cameron's team, West Ham (or was it Aston Villa? So easy to get them confused).

We were bloody lucky with that 1-1, though. I don't count on them missing two penalties this time.

Stekelenburg was on fire that day. It's a shame he wasn't that good more often.

I don't know, I think it's just as bad as supporting Liverpool, if not worse. I mean we try and fail to win trophies nowadays, but the Ev try to win the "finish above the redshite cup" every season, or win a derby, and well it doesn't really go well for them. Only pick them if you are a masochist ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Yeah that game was crazy and we were lucky to manage a pint. But also keep in mind that was during the period where our fitness level was awful and the team couldn't string two passes together, so that draw felt extra good.

We are way better team now, and this is the first time I am confident in tackling any top 6 team thrown ahead of us.

Cmon, not many really hate Liverpool. Like Arsenal, they've just morphed into a banter-club. So bad there is an almost universal pity. Klopp's taken a bit of the edge off as well, so is Gerrard not being around. I'm talking about real, pie eating and beer drinking bellied man waking up in the middle of the night in a sweat of sheer uncontrollable visceral hatred.

If you haven't woken up at 3am sweating, kicking, screaming and diving for your laptop to sign in and post in the "Football Thread 2017/18 |OT|" that you hate club x, then you haven't felt true English Premier League hate. The kind of hate that makes real grown men different from the manchildren crying over football banter. That kind of hate is routinely seen for Chelsea and Man City. I'm an expert in observing.

Most people don't give a fuck about City.

City and Chelsea have often been seen as the battle of the "oil clubs" which sees a lot of hate.

Yea, there's something about premier league football that turns grown men into savages. I always find it funny when you see middle aged men in the crowd making the wanker hand signal at 20 year old footballers, even funnier when their child is sat right next to them.

I'd say Chelsea are the most hated, followed by Utd and Liverpool in joint 2nd.

I'd agree with this. Chelsea are by far the most generally hated in my experience, and Liverpool/United have large fanbases that really hate each other. Only Spurs fans really hate Arsenal and nobody really gives a shit about City, not even their own fans judging by how empty their medium-sized stadium is at times.
