Eurogamer: "Microsoft's final sales pitch for Xbox One X falls flat"

There were true 4K editions of Disneyland Adventures, Rush: A Disney Pixar Adventure and Zoo Tycoon, all perfect for the discerning seven-year-old in your household who throws a hissy fit at the mere mention of checkerboarding.

Honestly, the biggest reason why I'd buy one right now is to replace my OG Xbox One because the hardware looks so much better.

And the fact that I don't want Windows 10 in its current state anywhere near my gaming PC so it would be the best way to play Forza 7.

Even as someone who usually loves buying new hardware for the sake of it, I'm finding this difficult to justify.

I'm typically a hardware but and that is why I have been an early adopter for years, essentially every new console day one.

I have absolutely zero interest in this though.

But would buy an even newer Ps4 pro or switch in a heartbeat. And this is coming from an Xbox fan.

They picked a bad year to launch it, honestly.

There's no compelling exclusive for people to buy alongside it. And you won't see any mention of the XB1X versions of Call of Duty, Destiny or Battlefront 2 because Microsoft fucked up and let Sony grab the marketing rights for those games.

They are selling the system on specs alone.

edit: Oh, and it's $499. If it was $399, nobody would care if it had exclusives or not. I had a pre-order in yesterday but decided against it. It's not a next generation, not yet. I've got all the base consoles already, plus a nice PC. If, for some reason, I want the prettiest version I'll get it on PC. I'm not buying a 4k monitor anytime soon, so my hardware should be fine until next gen truly starts.

No lies detected. Microsoft banks on the casual that plays mostly mainstream games, and within this segment they want to find the hardcore 'mainstreamers'. It's so weird to see them struggle with their audience.

I was sat there watching last night's stream and I couldn't figure out, for the life of me, who it was intended for. Given the size of the event it was only ever likely to attract a fairly niche audience, but that contradicted horribly with the mixture of minor new announcements and repeated trailers from E3. It didn't help, of course, that most of the significant announcements leaked before hand, leaving, well, almost nothing new at all. Case in point, the crossplay Sea of Thieves announcement... but anyone who was following Sea of Thieves closely already knew it would feature crossplay.

Ultimately this felt like a stream for hardcore Xbox fans that are, frankly, already elated with what Microsoft are providing. For anyone unconvinced or unsatisfied, this was a total joke. There's no doubt that Microsoft understand the problem when it comes to exclusives, there's just no evidence that they are going to fix it.

When you make a presentation of any sort, you need to know who your audience is. Microsoft haven't had a clue at any point this generation and this stream suggested they still don't. I didn't expect much from the stream, admittedly, but I still came away underwhelmed and cringing at the presenters.

I still don't understand why people thought they were going to suddenly drop a whole bunch of new games at gamescom.

They never said they would.

Sure, but, we're saying *they should have* announced new games. Like, the alternative is just to do as they did, not announced anything new, and keep the excitement as low as possible.

The amount of people that would buy an X over a PS4 for the 4k capabilities is incredibly minuscule. MS needs exclusives to actually sell this thing and they've got nothing.

I have the exact opposite take. People are buying consoles for multiplatform games more than exclusives. Having the best tech to match the new TV to play Battlefront 2 or whatever is in line with the market.
Maybe if you're on GAF, the average joe doesn't give a shit. All they care about is what has the most games they want and what system their friends are on. The answer to both of those is usually the PS4.

I'm just gonna quote what I said during the reveal.

Microsoft continues to show why they're out of touch with gamers. $499 is simply not acceptable in this day and age. The game selection's way too thin to justify gamers to invest in an overpriced console. It will do horribly in Europe and Asia, and will probably not do anything special in America.

Sony's been killing it because of Microsofts inability to read the market, and as things are going, they'll continue to be the industry leader.

In unrelated news, while digging up the quote, I just noticed that some guy stole my quote. I guess I'm flattered.

Yeah, the exclusive software situation is dire.
While Sony and Nintendo are finding their sucesses it is concerning that Microsoft seems to be lacking in competitive direction this gen.

Yeah...spot on..I'm not interested in Xbox again until next gen. I'm covered with PS4 and now with Switch there's almost too much stuff to play. It's a cool console, but content wise Its too easy to do without an Xbox this gen IMO.

Yeah... I'm hoping they have something planned for next fall, as 2017 is pretty much a lost cause for them on that front. Their 2018 will have a strong start with Sea of Thieves, Crackdown 3, and State of Decay 2. After that they can hopefully release Ori 2 and Below at some point, but their next holiday needs something bigger. I certainly don't blame people for being down on the platform in the meantime.

Xbox One X does seem to make it clear that they don't want a traditional generational restart at this point, as it'll be a hard sell to get PS4 owners away from that platform now. I think they made the right choice by focusing on their hardware and ecosystem, but the next few years desperately need new games to complete that circle. Sony's approach with the eventual PS5 will be a big factor as well, especially if they decide to cut ties with the PS4 entirely.

I'd say it's an amazing system for someone who doesn't yet own a current gen console and has the money to afford it. Or perhaps the most hardcore of current Xbox users who already have lots invested in that system

But other than that...yeah it's a really hard sell. I really don't know who they're after with it.

Agreed the only reason i am getting one is for online multiplayer with real life friends.

What they need to do, and probably couldn't on a stage show, is show direct comparisons between x1s and x1x games. Perhaps this week? But before launch for sure. Fly out DF again if need be

Looking back, Microsoft must be livid that Red Dead Redemption 2 got delayed into next year.

They would've loved the opportunity to detail how Xbox One X would be the place to play the year's most anticipated game. Whether that would've done the trick I'm not sure, but it would've drawn a lot of positive attention at the very least.

I mean, there's your answer.

So why did Microsoft bother and not just wait until next generation. That's another thing, this 500 bucks box, what's it's life span before next gen rolls around, 3 years?

Did Microsoft just want the label, Xbox One doesn't suck anymore, look at the graphics?

How effective will that be when Sony has all the promotion for those games? It is like the snowball rolling down the hill. Sony is the market leader and all the momentum is in their favor. Having the best version of multiplats is a good bullet point at the beginning of the generation when the consoles are trying to establish themselves. At this point, half way through the generation, I doubt it will cause any notable shifts in momentum.

Mind you, I'm not saying they won't see any benefit from it. Just not enough to really change anything.

These articles always seem like nothing but click generators and going over tired ground. The Scorpio's primary reason of existence IS to get back on top of the 3rd party king world. As for their exclusives, if they made an extra 2 AAA games a year (a realistic amount), it probably wouldn't change their hardware sales much.

They threw away this generation 4 years ago. All they can do now is slowly rebuild while trying to remain profitable. End the generation with a solid but not amazing install base, and hope to push on next go around.

The Gamescom show was bad though. There should have been more hype generation. If not from new games, from stuff like OG Xbox game lists and a few good demos of Scorpio.

Unless you're into Forza or Halo or Gears of War, I have seen little to no reason to get an Xbox console, especially when you're not in the US and if you're missing out on the valuable exclusives of other consoles.

If XOX was lower priced, the reason would be best console multiplatform games. Pretty huge reason for many gamers, including me. As a PS4 only owner the best games this gen have been multiplatform anyways and the same was last gen.

But at 499 I think the price is just too much.

So who are Eurogamer biased towards now? I can't keep up

Whoever they praise/critisize in the article at hand.

It's simple:

Praise PS thing -> Sony bias
Praise Xbox thing -> Microsoft bias
Praise Nintendo thing -> Nintendo bias
Say Xbox is better in a game comparison -> Microsoft bias
Say PS is better in a game comparison -> Sony bias
Be critical of Sony -> Microsoft bias
Be critical of Microsoft -> Sony bias
Be critical of Nintendo -> ?? SEGA bias ??

Of course there's also the idea that they are just chiming in with their opinion without any overarching agenda, but that's ridicolous if you can instead subscribe to the idea that they have stock in the opposing company just because they said something critical people might not agree with.

This guy gets it.

More negativity towards Xbox. What else is new at this point? Yes I'm well aware of how shitty their offerings are when it comes to exclusives this year and it's a big problem for sure but honestly it's getting a bit tiresome now.

All I know is that I'll be getting the One X in November and I'm excited to play tons of games on it, whether they are exclusives or not really shouldn't matter all that much then. Let's just enjoy shit for a change.

I can't imagine anybody was really expecting this to be easy for Microsoft, there will clearly be a market for the hardware but I don't see it being anything but tiny. You get a lot of hardware for the asking but I don't think relates to it being worth what they're asking for the vast majority of people who are really into Xbox stuff.

I'm sure the people who do end up buying will absolutely love it and think it's well worth what they paid for it but that will likely an absolutely tiny number of people in terms of sales.

It does seem to be a fantastic piece of hardware but for me, it somewhat reminds me of Kinect in that Microsoft appears to be answering a question that nobody is actually asking.

In my opinion. XboxOne X is The World's Most powerful 3rd-party game Console. (except JP games)

That's a fact.

A fact that won't sell consoles because people don't give a shit outside forums like this. If they did, your regular Joe would be asking Tesco if they have a gaming PC with a copy of FIFA.

Couldn't agree more though. Has nothing on offer.

As a XB1 and 4K Tv owner the X will offer me the best versions of multi-platform games (which I play the most anyway), the bonus of 4K Blu ray player.

however I can understand why PS4/Pro owners may not though

Sony has exclusive marketing rights to Red Dead, wouldn't have happened anyway.

What Xbox One exclusive is essential to have. Which one is one of the games that will define this generation? They have some solid exclusives, but as Eurogamer mentions, Forza, Halo and Gears feel like relics at this point.

One of the best platformers ever. One of the best arcade racing series ever. An excellent "sim" series. One of the best 3rd person shooter series ever. A really good RTS game. One of the best fighters ever. One of the best multi-player fps on the market. Etc, etc...

Because you choose to ignore them, or if they don't fall into your preferences...doesn't mean they don't have incredible games.

"Forza is a relic" is like saying "God of War" or "Uncharted" are a relic. They're all awesome console exclusives and I'll be there for all them. If you have a PC, then feel free to not buy an Xbox...but don't skip on the games, they're incredible games.

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.
Why? You can get them on PC.

I certainly don't blame people for being down on the platform in the meantime. Though I'm personally happy with the current output, I certainly wouldn't complain about them offering more.

Without even saying anything about the quality of those games (because that remains to be seen, regardless of what our opinions might be based on what we've seen so far), do any of those games make you sit up and think "I really need an Xbox one X for these games"? They are not exactly tour de force showcase games.

I've been a one mainer for the past few years, the X didn't really show me why I needed to buy it at all, and the exclusives aren't there. If I do get a system this fall it's going to finally getting a PS4 to round out my Xbox and switch.

Kind of on point, but they were never gonna have a bunch of announcements yesterday. It wasn't E3.

Although true, with how close to launch the XBX is to launching, there should have already been more announcements and game support announced. I think it's more of a criticism of how the clock is ticking but they aren't making any waves or generating much hype.

The reason the One X isn't enough is the lack of exclusive games, either being made or funded by Sony personally, or just because Japan isn't a viable market for MS and thus a lot of JP games are on playstation or even switch/3ds.

And having "the best versions of multiplats" isn't enough at this point. They waited too long and have lost so much of a foothold.

I'm not trying to critique anyone who is excited or is getting one, but I'm not sure MS' expectations were well-founded for the one x.
