Shenmue III – The 1st Teaser | PS4

If you add the facial animations with your imagination, this scene actually look pretty hype.

People need to stop exagerate when they see early work in progress footage. Then again, it was foolish from the developpers to show such an unfinished work to a big audience, because the reaction was to be expected.

Deep Silver is probably to blame as well.

Ryo's face is off, and I'm not talking (just) about the lack of animation. His hair looks weird too.

This is a Dreamcast render:

Environments look great. Ryo looks good but Shenhua is way off IMO. The biggest issue with the character models is the blank stares. If they fix that, it'll be a huge improvement to the presentation.

I know it's just a teaser, a very early build and all that.... but right now it's pretty damn ugly. Not only that, I think the font they're still using looks absolutely amateur, like it was made in 2 seconds with photoshop by someone who is just learning how to use it.

I'm going to feel really bad for Yu Suzuki if this game isn't beloved at release. The expectations are unrealistically high (including from me, just because of how long this has had to gain momentum all the way since 2). I'm not sold on some of the visual aspects and am not sure they can deliver the game we expect, but... I'm in either way.

Honestly, I just want a good story, even if I have to suffer through the gameplay, it will be worth it.

I expect a game that is very dated in terms of mechanics and very rough in terms of it's presentation.

Please deliver a good story!

I don't really understand the complaints. It's a work in progress, and I'm pretty sure all those people who begged for a new shenmue for over a decade did so because they wanted to see the story continue. Well it's finally happening and it looks better than what you'd have gotten if it released a few years after 2.

I've haven't played the first two yet. I really hope sega releases an hd collection before 3 releases, but if not i may just turn to emulators. I backed shenmue 3 because I almost felt obligated to as someone who loves games and has a close friend who hold the franchise close to his heart. I still don't regret backing it. Bring it on.

I meant to say 6, I have honestly never played any of the Yakuza games up to this point and I had no idea what the current game is numbered. Honestly, I need to get into that series at some point... but there are so many games in that series now, I have no idea where to start.

Start with 0. It's a prequel to the first game and is the most recent game released for western audiences as I type this post. It's also an amazing game. If you like that, a remake of Yakuza 1 releases on ps4 next week.

I always said they should have Sonic Mania'd it and made it with all the Dreamcast assets and whatnot, just with better textures and the Passport models. Then we wouldn't have to be looking at this UE4 Student Project.

Yup, I've been saying this from before the Kickstarter was even announced. It was honestly pretty easy to see the conflict between the old designs, the updated models and the budget constrained animations from a mile off.

Yea, it's questionable how much could actually be repurposed really. With that said though, I think if people were going to use graphics as a stick to beat the game with, I would imagine that'd end up being the case regardless due to budget. One thing I think low-poly assets would definitely have helped with in that regards would have been to mask obvious budget constraints when it comes to animations (and potential voiceovers), as the more advanced the graphics become the more these things stand out if not improved to the same extent. I would have wanted them to use a more modern engine regardless though, and make use of stuff like a proper lighting model for day/night cycles. No point not taking advantage of improvements you'd effectively be getting for free.

I'm glad they went for a more stylized approach. I didn't want it to look too different from the originals.

At the same time, I do hope people make enough of a fuss that they do something with the faces. They don't need to make them ultra realistic, but moving eyebrows and mouth muscles go a long way.

Ok yeah, this kind of looks like the Purge

I really hope I can have a way to play I and II before this releases. Looks fantastic to me. Faces look a little odd, but I find the whole thing charming, and visually appealing regardless. This isn't the greatest trailer of all time, but I'm so happy for fans of the original games. I backed it on Kickstarter just because I want them to have this- and I hope I can join in on the fun by the time this releases.

I don't care about the faces.

I don't care about bad animation.

I don't care about the odd lighting.

I will get this game, fall into its story and be lost in its world because I believe in Yu Suzuki's vision.

This trailer looked very good other than the animations and faces which still look off. Those things are important of course, and they should definitely improve that before release I'd certainly hope. But the general artstyle and detail of the environments were stunning, so that's good anyway. Still hyped for the game.

It's insane how good the environments, lighting, and PP look compared to the character models. Like one of those mods where they inject nintendo models into UE4 environments.

Gee it sure is a shame YSnet made these nice environments then decided to not improve any visual aspect of their game for the near year/year and a half before release, right guys?

Right...?

This is a Dreamcast render:

That's not an in game model though. It is being rendered on the Dreamcast, but it is also just a higher polygon head bust that was designed to be a tech demo for the Dreamcast hardware. The actual in-game models are lower polygon, with lower resolution textures.

But I kinda agree that Ryo's model looks a little bit off from the original Shenmue models.

I kinda wish Sega could port these games to PC. I need to buy a Ps4. But with their prices getting cheaper, I may do it.

I'm sure I'll love just being able to experience Shenmue 3 almost regardless of what happens

But, I still wish they had just used high res Dreamcast assets to make the game

It would have been a lot cheaper and helped make a larger scale game more possible at a lower budget. Would likely have saved them a lot of time. Maybe could have even been done by now.

That's exactly what I said, it's a dreamcast render.

The point is not how many polygons there are, the point is to show that the aesthetics of the face is far superior even with lower tech (a DC render is still just a DC render).

Like Sony would allow that. They're clearly pushing this. To what end, who knows.

I think you are looking for a book.

Environments look good but holy fuck I hope they are still working on those faces and animation. Hell the character models and animations in general need a lot of work. Why does he have a massive widows peak now???
