GI: Inkopolis In Splatoon 2 Is Drowning Out Hate With Trans-Positivity

Why did Nintendo seperate Japan players base from the US player base?

Was it because of the app? I miss logging on and playing with or against Japanese players. I see Japanese players every now and again but that's most likely someone's second Japanese account.

Splatoon 2 is one of the few Switch games so far where the Japanese version is a different SKU from the NA/PAL one. I'm still not sure exactly why but I think maybe because of local events/splatfests?

I think it's more of a geographical reason (latency and everything). I play with a US copy with a US account and I'm in Southeast Asia, playing mostly against Japanese folks.

I didnt went into the article, but basing on the OP's premise. I dont believe splatoon miiverse esque space is the right place to draw "trans gender squids" in the first place, since there are a lot of different backgrounds that are not ready to deal with such "radical" ideas. Not to mention that a lot of users could be like 10 year olds or somewhere around.

I know that Nintendo allows such drawings in the first place, but I dont think is to express your favorite gender to the public.

I hope that I dont get labelled as a phobic or hater just because I think differently.

Granted, people should never insult or offend each other regardless of who you are.

Read this again and see if you find the wrong stuff.

This is so sad.

To keep Japanese players safe from us filthy gaijin.

Lol, it's the opposite. To make it so foreigners can actually win some games.

Edit:

Jokes aside, the game is region free and you can play with anyone in the world, but the game matches you with people in your area. If you join a friend somewhere else, you're going ti play with the people in your friend's area.

I really believe this is just asking for trouble and is completely out of place for this kind of environment, especially for a kids game. Splatoon has nothing to do with sexuality/sexual ethics and should stay that way.

I don't need to see "Trans Squids are Kool" and "I'm Gay!" plastered on the walls in a match (it puts player messages as graffiti in the MP maps). It's totally inappropriate imo and takes me out of the whimsical mood.

You're equating real people to being radical for simply existing. You are also making them sound like they are 'bad' by telling us that 10 year olds should not know about them. Like sex, the word 'fuck', drugs, alcohol, and gambling. You are essentially comparing them to vices.

The LGBT posts could be making the day of some kid who is gonna play Splatoon 2 tomorrow and feel a bit better. I'm pretty sure not only straight squids play this game.

Sounds like your just looking for a reason to be offended at an opinion contrary to your own.

Being trans isn't sexual any more than saying "hi I'm a guy" is sexual. Kids learn from an early age what gender means, and trans people should be a fundamental inclusion in that. There's nothing scary, devious or abnormal about it.

That's really cool.

Not a lot of online communities have overwhelming positive support for the lgtbq. Im really happy about this.

As for those in this thread that feel morally offended or whatever: try stepping away from the computer a bit. It'll save you from looking like a twat.

So fine with "LGBT", in fact, that you don't want to see them talk about being LGBT or spread love for LGBT people in places you personally deem unnecessary? Because they have "nothing to do with" said places?

Just want to make one more post on this subject so I can be sure that I'm perfectly clear here.

If someone wants to spread love for LGBT in Splatoon, be my guest! If it ain't against the TOS far be it from me to tell you what to post. My issue is when it becomes a nuisance to people who want to enjoy the Inkopolis message feature as intended and not be swarmed by a mini-Splatfest between pro and anti-LGBT/furries/whatever. Hell, I admit I enjoyed seeing the mass tributes to Iwata in the original Splatoon but I'm also sure that there were plenty of people who did not enjoy seeing their usually happy plaza filled with gravestones and crying Nintendo characters. There's nothing wrong with not wanting to see content you personally find undesirable spammed in-game, especially when there are currently no filters beyond turning messages off entirely.

I don't think I'm being unreasonable here, trans people have nothing to do with Splatoon. It's like if I went into the Sonic Mania OT and started posting about how all body shapes are beautiful. I might not be wrong but it's still not the place to be talking about it.

Not equating the two, just saying that the furry stuff was a similar posting fad that flooded my square and drowned out everything else.

My duder trans people PLAY splatoon

That's all you need

A ton of people would disagree with that and I don't want that "aura" hanging over the game and inciting backlash among users. I've already seen hateful things from both sides just because this odd trend is spreading. I just report both as inappropriate and move on. Using a kids game as a platform for this just seems so misaligned.

And if it is indeed as simple as saying "I'm a guy/girl" then there is no profundity to it at all. Instead I see it everywhere when I log on like it's some agenda of the community. I don't get it.

I'm not trying to instigate and argument about it, but it rubs me the wrong way when I just want to play a silly Nintendo game.

This is not what the thread is going to be about, but if you really feel the need to compulsively wring your hands when you find out that people are gay or trans, then what you need is therapy and self-reflection.

Splatoon 1 had a lot of corporate sponsor events for gear and even Splatfests. This is probably the reason why.

I think it's kinda neat to see lbgt support in a game that is for kids too. I prefer that above endless furrie posts.

I'm on mobile so I can't post a greater breakdown, but I just want to say that the status quo is never neutral and that no spaces are free from being contested ground. Feel glad you can exist in a space without your mere existence being a political position and "instigating backlash"

I actually don't even know what you mean by that.

All I'm trying to express is that in a game where I want to escape the world and just enjoy the game, I don't want to see sensitive/political/personal/private topics being plastered around the game. It just smells of desperation for attention and using a game as a platform.

And yet...

---

I seriously dunno how people who claim to be just fine with LGBT manage to get bothered by this. The game has a message board where you can post about all kinds of subject, so I dunno why this one is off-limits. Can't even fall back on the "It's a kid's game" excuse when it's pretty clear it bothers y'all personally more than anything, but whatever, do you.

I understand that you are coming from a good place, that you probably have good intentions and that you aren't some intentionally hateful bigot. That's great!

The thing is, if this kind of talk makes you feel "uncomfortable" and you feel it's "taboo for children", I think you should have a good, hard look at yourself. Explore your feelings, and you might find that you have a subconscious bias that you didn't even know you had.

I'm telling you this because I've been there. I think this is a better way to encourage people to self reflect than to just hurl insults at them.

Lol, at all these "mah kids play this game!" posts.

Yeah well, so does mine. And I'm not worried about her being "exposed" to LGBT positive posts because she already knows what that means. We had this talk years ago. Are parents not including this stuff in The Talk? Frankly I had a harder time explaining what furries are than what trans means.

I don't mind it. But I hate the Fads of Splatoon 2 so far.

Like in the first game I was excited to see what people in the Plaza had to draw/wrote...

...now it's 80% on the same subject and not even drawings 50% of the time.

I don't think when the Devs and the fans wanted Miiverse-Style drawing back that it was to have it clogged up with samey messages.

I wonder if in 2 weeks we will be onto a new Schoolyard Fad or moved onto actually drawing different things and not being a hive mind.

My biggest problem with all these 'mah kids are playing this game' post are that they equate being trans to sexualized stuff as if it's smut porn.

It's not. If you think that way then that's your problem.

Basic human rights are not politics.
They are when they're being politicized. If they weren't people wouldn't bother making their stance known in Splatoon of all places.

It's certainly not what I'm playing the game to hear. I play games to escape politics and the like. But whatever. They're easy enough to pass by. I'm sure people will take that to mean I'm anti LGBT or whatever, but keep in mind I'm also referring to "trans is a mental disorder" posts and the like. Some people may take value in trans-related posts, but I just want to play the game.

Also fwiw it doesn't sound like Splatoon 2 is drowning out trans-hate, it just sounds like both sides are getting louder, just like much of the rest of the world.

(Hint: expressing pride in who you are isn't a "stance".)

(And trans posts aren't stopping you from "just playing the game". Your impulse to negatively react to them does.)

Why are you equating recognizing that different people exist to bigoted posts such as 'trans is a mental disorder' posts? It's not that much different than the moderates that keep saying 'I don't want politics in mah _____' towards the white supremacy/KKK and counterprotest shit we had to deal with last week, to be quite frank.

If positive LGBT posts in a video game like Splatoon 2 makes you wanna say "I wanna just play the game"... then you can. You just press X and go to the lobby.

I just can't help but cast side eye on those who say it may hamper their enjoyment of the game. I don't get it.

Seriously, it takes but a couple seconds to go straight to playing. If seeing LGBT love just bums you out and ruins your escapism, then I dunno what to say

TBH i'd much rather see the dope art that Japan Splatoon 2 sees. USA splatoon is just drama. I just wanna have good vibes and no "war". Yes, seeing those kinda pics does in fact burn me out. I see enough fighting in real life, facebook, and TV. Games have always been a place where I can just kinda not work my brain on real life stuff ya feel?

Yes I would. I already block the people doing Donald Trump drawings in my plaza. It's horrible enough.

Yeah OK that was a bad example. But people who look at people celebrating positivity and going "I don't wanna see that" should ask themselves why they don't want to see that really.

If people were posting about how proud they are to be American would you guys be "stop being so political in my games".

I wouldn't say that specifically, but I would question why so many people are proud to be American when this country is currently going through some dark times. In a less-politically charged context I'd probably interpret it as a meme, but it's easy to take something like that and interpret it negatively when we live in a world where so much of popular culture is influenced by the fact that we have a president that is considered to be horrific by a very large segment of the country.

1. In this case, sure it is. Inkopolis seems divided between different viewpoints on the matter, and you have people expressing their opinion towards one side. Many of the posts I've seen seem clearly made to express a message on the issue.

2. When did I say they were? It's just not what I play for.

It's not. If you think that way then that's your problem.

People have no problem with kids being introduced to the concepts of a gender binary, nor heterosexual relationships. Hell, people sometimes force these things on their kids ("oh, my little man is such a lady killer" when their 4 year old son has a girl for a friend and no idea what being a "lady killer" even entails). I wish people would stop using the but-muh-kids defense, people who don't subscribe to a gender binary or who are transgender exist, gay people exist, and if you didn't think it was abnormal or corrupting or shameful there should be no issue in recognizing that and explaining it to your kids.

if you dont like it then shut up and fuck off, voicing your displeasure with people being proud of who they are is just you being a privileged shit

we're talking about marginalized groups here, and it is often pivotal to the development and identity of these frequently young kids/teens playing splatoon. if you dont want to be supportive then why bother talking about it

The people who post Donald Trump drawings think they're doing something positive :(

But anyways, I just miss all the cool drawings people used to do for games that supported miiverse. I get that it's way harder with the Switch though if you aren't using one of the programs.

It's fine that people want to express themselves and their views in Splatoon 2, but what used to be a fun thing to walk around and check out the creativity on display has mostly been replaced with words and no drawings/sketches. I don't even walk around to view other people's stuff anymore because it's always a bunch of people on opposite sides of a social issue arguing.
