CrowbCat - LawBreakers in an oversaturated market

So in the initial sales thread I saw a lot of people mention that this game didn't have any marketing, but this video suggests they paid a zillion people to advertise this game.
That was exactly my first thought, too.

I was watching the video, and I was thinking, 'holy... when did all this marketing happen :O why was that initial sales thread that first time I really even noticed the game.'

Cliffy is indeed emblematic of the cosmic brain meme

One tweet doesn't prove anything. As far as I know, he has built a very successful life and makes good games.

I don't think that the market leader of FPS games being on the more casual side means that the landscape as a whole doesn't care about games with higher skill ceilings.

Lawbreakers doesn't need to be a market leader to be successful, hell it probably doesn't need to have 10% of the OW install base to be a success.

There could be (and probably are) a ton of reasons why LB isn't currently doing well. Some of it may have to do with what you're talking about, but to suggest that's the reason why it's probably not doing so hot (at least on PC) just comes across as naive.

It's not naive to say the gaming landscape has changed. When I see so many comparisons to OW, it's quite obvious where things stand.

The smugness people have over this game's failure is annoying as fuck. Congrats, a really fun game couldn't find an audience. CliffyB being a douche doesn't take away from this game or the talented team behind it.

And not just a racist meme, but a meme that is used by and known primarily in /pol/ and other outstandingly hateful communities of the internet. No one would ever "accidentally" use that meme.

Either you know about it because you agree with it or you know about it because you are against it (in which case you wouldn't use it for comedy). Or you don't know about it at all (in which case it wouldn't use it at all).

I watched the video. Is it the thing at the very end? I must be really out of touch with some memes cause I don't know where that stuff is from.

Exactly, especially when there's clips in the video itself acknowledging that and hoping to build a community over time instead of it being a smash hit out the gate.

It's not naive to say the gaming landscape has changed. It has, and it will always be changing.

It is naive to suggest that it has changed to the point where people don't care about challenging shooters when there are multiple challenging shooters out on the market as we speak.

CS:GO, R6:Siege, and PUBG are challenging shooters. Maybe not challenging in the same way as Lawbreakers or Quake, but challenging nonetheless.

This community amazes me sometimes. Some seriously sensitive people here.

Good video. Don't think it had much of a 'point', rather it is just a good documentation of games history in the timeline.

Cliffy B does make me laugh though, good guy and genuine. But, "Dark Souls of Shooters!"

Use white supremacist memes, get labeled a white supremacist.

It was a single line in an 18 minute video. As someone that didn't really understand that meme when I watched the video (this is the first I've heard of it), I wouldn't really jump to call him a white supremacist. It's not like the entire point of that video was to say that white people are better. Jesus...

I'd say he put in a really, really, really, really, really, really bad joke. He probably didn't intend to piss off black people. But... I don't really know for sure. That's just my impression. Considering he's never done anything like that before....

Yeah, apparently his videos are supposed to be making some kind of statement about a game's quality. To me they've always just been a compilation of build-up\marketing -> release -> failure. Edited in a way that's slightly humorous. He doesn't always hit the mark with the points he's trying to make... but nonetheless I knew a Lawbreakers video from him was inevitable.

The game is really awesome. Very fun.
But, I know it is popular to hate on LB right now - even if you've never played it.
The game had a ton of beta players, a lot of people who didn't buy it and didn't like it have in fact played it.

And yet CS:GO, PUBG, R6: Siege, Quake Champions, Tribes Ascend and Titanfall 1/2 all managed to find big audiences recently.

From the same guy who deceitfully assembles every bit of video footage he can find of a faulty product to make it seem that the product is a disaster.

Fuck CrowbCat.

I enjoy his stuff, it's just all it really boils down to is a Zero Punctuation review without the commentary.

Oversaturated market is correct. The ceiling is so high on sales for shooters when you have the right game at the right time, but it is brutal when you do not. Meanwhile, Hellblade and Slime Rancher have been doing solid business. Hopefully they can carve out a decent size audience, but there are now even more shooters coming out very soon.

I'm aware of the discussion, but you guys seem to have no idea of how ridiculous you sound when you label Crowbcat (who's ethnicity is unknown) a white supremacist because of a 3 second audio clip that was used in a comedic context.

But you do you, keep being overly sensitive.

On a day where Quake Champions goes into Early Access, a video like this is even more interesting to me.
Hope Quake has more staying power then Lawbreakers.

CS:GO and PUBG are challenging shooters. Maybe not challenging in the same way as Lawbreakers or Quake, but challenging nonetheless.

CSGO and PUBG are challenging at a high level, the difference is Lawbreakers has a high aim and movement requirement even when just starting out. If you didn't play lots of shooters back in the UT/q3/tribes days then the amount of vertical aiming you have to do is going to be more than you are used to. The high TTK means you are tracking enemies for long periods of time on axis that you haven't been trained for.

That is the main difference here. I expect Quake to not be a hit on Steam charts either as the market for these types of shooters just isn't there anymore, but it won't be as bad because it has some name brand recognition.

CSGO, Tribes Ascend and Titanfall 1 were released *ages ago* in internet time, Titanfall 2 sold below expectations, and Quake Champions hasn't been released yet.

I certainly hope the game pulls a R6: Siege, we'll see how well it's supported.

You can't know about that meme without being pretty deep in 4chan hell, and people who are that deep in are usually racists and nazis.

Sure, I'm not arguing against that point. Saying that people don't want to play challenging shooters is just kind of a dumb statement. Some people won't want to, but that's not the only reason why LB isn't doing so hot currently.

I love the game and hope it finds a following, but I don't get the point in these weird statements like "people don't like the game i like because people don't like challenging shooters." It seems like a cop-out.

CliffyB is such a giant douche. Glad his game is selling like shit.
Yeah... fuck the other people too that also worked on the game cause you have a baby grudge against Cliffy and wanted the game to sell like shit..

Some of you complain about Cliffy too much, it's starting to become borderline unhealthy. lmao

Overly sensitive? He used a racist meme that is popular among white supremacists. Fuck that.

Maybe he didn't know that meme was popular with white supremacists and just saw it once and thought it'd be funny to include. Maybe it's like the one joke involving Egypt that he knows?

I dunno. But people really are quick to outrage over this. A tiny clip in a very long video and he's never done anything like that in any of his videos before. Suddenly he's scum of the Earth?

You can't know about that meme without being pretty deep in 4chan hell, and people who are that deep in are usually racists and nazis.

How do you know about it then?

The video compiles how the game market was generic and used all the buzzwords possible. I still shaking after watching.

What do you mean? I've watched the whole video and it's pretty intense. It's crazy how the editing is done and the pictures flow at high speed. It's pretty adictive and sometimes even difficult to watch, but that's great because it's the same thing I feel when I watch a video about... I don't know... Dark Souls.

Why do they call it a "Hero" shooter when it's just different classes like we have had since Team Fortress 1?

Hero shooters tend to be personality based, not role based, I think?

So with Team Fortress there's a medic class. But with Overwatch there are medic heroes that belong to the medic class.

Yeah I'm not saying it's the only reason just part of it. I mean Quake Champions had a huge beta push and press blowout a while back, and just a couple weeks later it was taking 10 minutes to find matches. Since it was on the Bethesda launcher you couldn't get numbers like you can on Steam but I can't imagine it had more than a few hundred dedicated players, similar to LB.

With QC hitting Steam today I think we'll see the same initial interest and then huge dropoff. As someone who really likes these style of shooters I find it really sad they can't find an audience today.

I'm not into 4ch at all, but cmon man that's really broad strokes.

"I don't know about this community of white supremacists but calling them white supremacists is harsh"

/pol/ is literally a haven for white supremacists and one of the birthplaces of the current resurgence in neo-nazis dude

This thread sure got entertaining. *grabs popcorn*

And I won't say CrowbCat is some alt-righter or something that far, but if you see Egypt and the first thing that comes to your mind is "We were kangz", you definitely need to look at yourself in the mirror.

You can't know about that meme without being pretty deep in 4chan hell, and people who are that deep in are usually racists and nazis.

You can know of something and still be against it.

Cliff Bleszinski, David Jaffe and Randy Pitchford should team up and make the Dark Souls of Shit Games That Don't Sell.
Ehhh... CliffyB says dumb things but I think he's a genuine good guy who really wants to make great games, Unlike that lying cunt Randy Pitchford.
Don't know much about David Jaffe though.
