You own the rights to a franchise and can create 1 game in it. What do you choose?

Imagine the following:

Due to whatever circumstances you get the opportunity to buy the rights for one franchise. You then also get the opportunity to gather a team of your choosing and create a single game in that franchise. What franchise do you choose, what team do you build, what game do you create?

For me it would be a simple one. I would get the rights to create another Lufia game and would gather the old team and finally finish the story like it was intended in the canceled Ruins Chaser. Basically, I would let them create Ruins Chaser. I just want to see what they had planned back then.

Star Control

Though my indie-knowledge is not strong enough to know which rogue-lite developer is best-suited to take this project on.

A comprehensive RPG for the entire World of Darkness franchise. It would not feature a static 'main story' but instead a world with many entry points into whatever goal or conclusion the player wishes to develop for their character themselves.

If we're going to go wild with infinite budget and a fantasy development team then include a 'gamemaster' AI system that generates quests and campaigns with each playthrough.

Tactics orge. Let's wrap the series with a conclusive ending. Ps4 and vita. All playable characters from previous games will have a presence.

Soul Reaver

And no Open World bullshit. A bit of non linear progression, but otherwise a traditional story heavy Soul Reaver.

New Splinter Cell game in the vein of Hitman 2016. Episodic with complex, large levels and various missions within each level, similar to Hitman's escalations, contracts, missions and bonus missions.

Encourage replayability along the lines of Blacklist - predator, ultra stealth, super murder, non-lethal, etc. Go light on story like Hitman too, and tell story using the environment and people within it. Unlock equipment in a similar way to Hitman too. Basically, everything Hitman did set a fantastic precedence for gameplay.

Get the team from Chaos Theory + Blacklist. Clint Hocking (SC, SC:pT, SC:CT and Far Cry 2) on board as director.

Co-op would be nice too, Spies vs Mercs as well, but not sure how they'd work without compromising the episodic nature. Spies and Mercs can go down the R6 Siege path with unique characters for each side.

One can dream...

Edit: Clint is back at Ubisoft these days, with Ubisoft Toronto, who made Blacklist... Oh no, I've got myself excited for something that will probably never happen.

The Getaway

Create an open-world London (identical mapping like the originals) with two main protagonists, one on either side of the law. The characters switch between chapters like Yakuza 0 but inhabit the same map (London, duh). Emphasis on story and realism/authenticity.

I know it's GAF's favourite slogan but I really feel Sony is leaving money on the table with this franchise - it fits perfectly with their current line-up yet at the same time fills a gap.

I think I'll do Batman on the NES, or Strider on the Mega Drive. Or Contra.

Actually they are all fair game. Let's talk in nine months.

StarCraft is probably due for a genre switch as it stands. I'd get the RTS team together with some from the Overwatch team and try to adapt the franchise into a game type similar to C&C Renegade's online mode, only a bit more focused and polished. RTS/shooter hybrid where players get income to make what they want, can use created vehicles, bases can be destroyed, etc. I've never seen it really attempted in that way since Renegade but my friends and I had a blast with that game. Feel like there's a ton of unexplored potential with that idea.

would make a GX style game with the same gameplay but new storymode and stages.

or fudge it, just a straight GX remake. Game was glorious.

I would choose Streets Of Rage. Bombergames (the team behind SOR Remake) would be a perfect fit for a Sonic Mania-style sequel.

I'd go making Darklands 2 as the best big budget RPG ever seen.

Then file for bankrupt and flee the country.

I'd reboot Mega Man Legends, which would cover the events of Mega Man Legends 1, 2, and adds a short feel-good conclusion to round off the series.

I'd make a Cowboy Bebop game with CD Projekt Red. It would be the most expensive game ever made, but worth every penny.

I'll go with a Remember Me 2 with more focus on changing memories and adventuring while improving the combat, DONTNOD OG team on it.

Might be the GOAT game after that.

Secret of Mana. a true sequel to the snes game, not the fairy woodland BS square keeps pushing every time they attempt a new "mana game"

add some Diablo-ish endgame with mulitplayer to entice the kiddos

This thread is too hard :( I'm suffering from post-shyness figuring out the best response from the 10 or so ideas I immediately have.

MediEvil.

Gather a team of passionate devs (ideally some of the original team). The game would be an open world, very much taking inspiration from Zelda BOTW, but with most of the characters from MediEvil 1 & 2. The story line would follow a rejected proposal by the original devs that sees Sir Daniel travelling back in time in order to correct a screwed up timeline, which eventually winds up with him having to kill his living self in order to close the paradox loop.

The art style would be very Nightmare Before Christmas. With claymation styled graphics (something like Kirby's Rainbow Curse). Paired with cartoony style stretch/squash animation.

The tone would be dark humour as the series always has been, but with some serious undertones about living up to one's own hype and characters dealing with their own mortality.

Finally the score would see Bob & Barn return to orchestrate their dark Elfmanesque style tracks but with stems to work like Red Dead Redemption. Meaning that the music adapts dynamically to the players decisions and actions.

Star Wars - Third person action RPG (with lightsabers).

Dark Souls like combat, with Deus Ex/Prey exploration and dungeon crawling, set in an open world (system) with several planets, mass effect (kotor) like part building/characters, good story, physic based force powers (force unleashed) and space combat.

My dream game.

Banjo-Kazooie. A new 3D platformer in the vein of the first game. Smaller worlds (maybe one or two more than the original) with the same charm, magic, wit, and challenges.

I'd go with either Pokemon or Smash Bros, because my awful decisions would most likely have a staying effect in all their sequels, muahahahaha

Final Fantasy: Final Fantasy Tactics 2, build on what made the first game great. Job system and political intrigue.

Alpha Protocol: A sequel. Keep the mission structure and improve controls.

Fallout: Make an isometric, turn-based Fallout game. Exploration and factions play a big role.

I ask Vanquish² by Tango directed by Mikami, then :
- more sceneries and ennemies variety.
- a choice at the begginning of each mission between sam and a woman close to vanessa from pn03.
- expand the melee with kick, punch and combo, tied to character instead of weapon.
- characters and weapons abilities to improve with points and loots.

I never knew a third MediEvil was planned. I now want this.

Colony Wars. A proper console AAA action space shooter ala Wing Commander / Freespace 1/2, I-War.

Devs: everybody involved with Space Shooters. Could see also someone like Guerrilla Games try their hands. Give them enough $$$ and they are going to get it right.

I like games like Elite and NMS. Star Citizens also looks good too but they all want/do a lot of things (exploration/trade etc).
I want an action/story focused space shooter and not travel from Station X to Station Y all day to buy and sell 100 units of space pork.
Give me huge battles, hunting missions, betrayal, capital ships / carriers, factions, Alien Tech etc etc. (loved I-War for PC back then).

I'm so starved for something like this that i powered through Rebel Galaxy in no time.

Huge battles are probably rather CPU heavy so i doubt we will see anything remotely this gen. Genre is also rather niche.

Crusader: No (insert words like reproach, resentment, repentance etc here).

I mean, it's been too long and the fight against the WEC isn't over.

With games like Hotline Miami, Diablo III, and the recent Ruiner now would be the best time to go back and see the story of the Enforcer unfold even further. Best done with B-movie style news sequences, a shady weapons dealer and other characters who take themselves too serious.

Think of the destruction porn you can do today! :D
