BioMutant - Announcement Trailer (from ex-Just Cause/Mad Max Devs)

Didn't have the time to play this yesterday at Gamescom, but from what I saw others play, the combat looks pretty solid. Have seen a good variety of attacks. Apparently the game features multiple combat styles, so if the demo footage I saw featured one of them, I'm really looking forward to see how much combat options the full game will feature. I haven't seen anyone struggle with the controls, so that's great too - those look very responsive. The walking sections in the demo between the combat sections weren't too long. I hope they keep that pace in the final game.

I also like how everything of the main character is customisable. From MMO-like character customisation to lots of available gear and stuff. Pretty solid game with lots of potential. Hopefully the developers can make the whole game as good and interesting as the demo makes it look like. A compact world instead of a huge world where you have to walk miles through a desert of nothing is what I want and hope to see from this game - and also expect to see now. :)

I didn't have enough time to play myself because of an appointment, but I did film 10 minutes of the demo (this is not the complete demo btw), and since I couldn't find any gameplay footage on YouTube yet, I decided to put it online. I'll put it offline again once other video's surface because I didn't play the filmed footage myself and I feel kinda bad for it. Anyway, those who really want to see some demo footage right now, enjoy my bad quality recording with the camera of a cheap smartphone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0jEvNdNYpA

Furry characters are back?!

It looks like a fun game too. Cant wait for more game play. If the combat is good (im hoping for a Ninja Gaiden, DMC , Bayonetta ish .. ) im in there.

Looks like Zelda meets Just Cause on a budget. Looks like they're really pushing the many-ways-to-play gameplay so I hope it can pull it off.

There's definitely still some jank and some unpolished elements there, but I'm feeling a lot more confident about the combat now. It looks fast and fun, and I already can't wait to trick out my own post-apocalyptic panda-fox.

Visually it seems like a mixed bag; the interiors look pretty drab and last-gen at times, but the exteriors look lush and gorgeous. Can't wait to see how it shapes up over the (presumed) final year of development.

Btw unrelated but how is THQ back did they not go bankrupt? Did someone take over the company?

The old THQ is dead, Nordic Games got the THQ name and they renamed themselves THQNordic, also Nordic Games/THQNordic now is the publisher who bought a lot of THQ's IPs

Ah i see thanks that explains how Darksiders is still alive too:p cool.

THQ went bankrupt. However, in order to get some last-minute money, the curators sold all of THQ's IP and trademarks through an auction. That's how Deep Silver bought Saints Row for example. One of the companies that bought a lot of THQ's IP was Nordic Games, which was a small Sweden-/Austria-based publisher and distributor of mostly PC games. With intentions to grow, they bought a lot of IP (list can be found here) but also the "THQ" logo and name trademark. Later, they did some ports of Darksiders and Legend of Kay under their own name, but in order to reach a wider market, they decided to use the THQ logo + name they bought in the auction. THQ Nordic is the same as Nordic Games - and not THQ. It has a different management than the original THQ that went bankrupt. Nordic Games however owns a lot of THQ's IP and now also uses the THQ name because that name simply is more well-known than Nordic Games' own name.

tl;dr: Nordic Games bought a lot of THQ IP, including logo + THQ name. They rebranded themselves as THQ Nordic. The management of the original THQ isn't involved afaik.

Edit: beaten :p

Thanks for the detailed info post tho, will take a look at that list. And yeah makes sense i never heard about Nordic they seem to have made some great games tho so it's nice the IP's are still alive there and at other pubs/devs.

They didn't have any in-house developers themselves when they bought THQ's assets. They just did publishing, distribution, and marketing. They've grown a lot since and now also have five studios themselves (see their Wikipedia page in the Subsidiaries section). Including external studios, they've 423 people working on THQ Nordic projects right now. To compare, that number was 372 at the end of 2016. They're growing fast and they can fund bigger projects now too, such as Darksiders III and Biomutant!

In this interview (which was linked somewhere earlier in this thread I believe), the director of the game says it's content complete. That first magazine ad said Early 2018 and I don't see why that won't be happening tbh. They have 5+ months left to polish the game.

I think he was shading me for saying "all big three platforms" and misleading him to think I meant Switch as one of platforms.

If it's like Blandsiders then I might get this for sale only.

^ why it was unwise for THQ and now THQ Nordic to green light games like this and Darksiders

That's pretty cool tbh, i really hope biomutant and darksiders 3 turn out well for us and succesfull for em:p cool to see how a "small" company can become pretty big in such short amount of time, as i said hopefully it works out great since it would be cool to have another great pub/dev join the current great ones. Especially if more games like biomutant and darksiders (and new IP's) come from em. Seems like they have some very creative/passionate minds working there wich is fantastic.

New post instead of a super late edit: Actually, 423 was the number on June 30, but they acquired Black Forest Games last week, which is a studio with 50 employees, so it's probably ~475 people now.

That's good to hear

Can you describe it a bit more in details? :D

Details! Details!
Sorry guys. My internet access is limited here.
That's why I'm late with my response.

First of all I had no expectations because I didnt see any footage until I actually played it.

It was a really good demo. U just had to go to a station. Nobody had to explain you stuff. Everything was communicated through a tutorial like enviroment. I'm sure you have seen a demo walkthrough so I won't go into details of the demo content

I would describe it as a Darksiders / Devil May Cry light like game. The combat does indeed feel like Devil May Cry light. Not so much variety as a DMC game but satisfying and fun.
Basically you have a button for shooting Y and a button for sword combat X. You can also use both midair. Holding RB while attacking will change an attack.
For example I pressed RB and Y midair to peform a spin attack while shooting bullets. looks cool. You can dodge with B. When you fight against bigger enemies you can slide between their legs to get behind them with B.
As you progress in the demo you get some abilities (besides the exploration this part feels a bit like darks siders too) using magic like an electro shock or shrooms (lol!)
Shrooms are hilarious. I casted a shroom so my enemy bounces in the air. I caught him mid air with my sword attacks and finished him off.

Enemy and world design are right up my ally.
Yea and I love action-rpgs. So I'm definitely hyped for this one.

Performance wise it was ok. Some drops in combat but nothing major. I guess it was PC hardware.

Funny moment:
You can mark location signs. I guess they are waypoints. Your main character actually pees on the signs to mark the location lol

What else do you want to know?

Thats fantastic to hear, I view it this way. My most anticipated game from THQ Nordic is Darksiders 3, and if THQN can make sure this game is a blast to play then I feel safe about the future of Darksiders 3.

Can't wait to see how the polish on this game proceeds, as it might be a 2019 title.

-----------------

out of curiosity, is there a skill tree? if there is a progression system care to explain it if you've seen it?

Now what's the next step in your master plan?

The game is coming out next year from what the developers said.

day 1.

sold!!!

I always wanted some kind of follow up to Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath, and this game is really pressing the right buttons for me. Totally getting some (more colorful) Stranger's Wrath vibes from the art design.

Just saw the ign interview with the lead developer. The game looks janky, but I'm still optimistic that stuff like that can be fixed until the release. Like there's a door they open that the character clips through. Small stuff that adds to the wholeness of it. I'm still hyped however.
