Microsoft (Aaron Greenberg) confirms they're in talks with Sony about crossplay

Why doesn't Sony allow cross play? Curious what you guys think. It has to do with money I bet, and keeping the PlayStation experience locked to PkayStation consoles.

MS is all for cross play because of their new Windows + console unification strategy. Sony doesn't have this, and had instead made PlaySation the center of its entertainment ecosystem.

Considering it's Microsoft we are talking about there's most likely some really ugly small print clauses which make it impossible to sign for any sensible company.

It is the following scenario:
1. Friend John owns a PS4
2. Friend David wants to play Rocket League together with John. David owns neither a PS4 nor a XboxOne
3. David likes Forza but really wants to play together with John
4. David buys a PS4

With cross-play David can buy a XboxOne to play together with John and enjoy Forza.
Now the reverse scenario (where John owns an XboxOne) is less likely due to the dominant market share of the PS4.

This is also why MS and Nintendo have zero problems with it. It works in their favour.

Still I think the benefit is so small for Sony that they should do it anyway.

This is my amateur opinion

It's a Microsoft account. If you've bought from Microsoft, or used skype or any of their services, you are already in anyway. Don't see the big issue here. They need it to authenticate and see what you own.

That's also just for Minecraft, don't need any Microsoft account for other crossplay games.

You want MS to have direct access to PSN accounts then? Because thats a great idea! Much more comfortable "4 the playerz" than making an account in 2 minutes.

What about a Microsoft account?

I'm sure a software gaint like MS could develop a better "handshake" implementation than that.

There ya go!
Honestly I think Destiny and Monster Hunter Worlds are two that could use crossplay since the communities are close knit. At the same time if crossplay is just to increase player count and i cant chat message or interact with specific friends I can care less about randoms. They need to go all in and make I seamless.

Isn't the purpose of cross-play as in Minecraft that you can use your account and game state across different platforms? Why should Microsoft use PSN logins for that instead of their own account system, which is 100% compatible with Minecraft.

They'd need to implement an entirely new login system if they wanted to support PSN logins on Minecraft for iOS and Android for example. Not sure if that's even possible.
So why bother with crossplay if what they want is add even more account logins to final user?

Yeah let's not forget that for everything MS did for the indie scene, the parity clause was a thing for a long time. Who knows what's being said in these discussions.

They'd need to get rid of the timed exclusive shite in Destiny for it to work (maybe).

Biggest roadblock for Sony is the compulsory Xbox Live login required on Minecraft PS4 for this, otherwise Sony would've allowed this ages ago

I doubt MS would've allowed vice versa to happen if it was Sony with the Minecraft mandatory PLAN login on Xbox required

If this was the case they would've allowed crossplay for Rocket League and Ark. Since they don't that can't be the reason.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Update: "it is still Sony's fault"

They really just need to allow it. It's like the most business decisions of business decisions. Do they still advertise with 'for the players'?

The reason they don't do this is for business reasons.

Hasn't that been their stance for awhile? It doesn't sound like they've made progress.

Sony gives 0 fucks about their competition when they're in such a commanding lead.

I mean, it's not best for the consumer, but what corporation doesn't fuck their consumer base from time to time? Apple has made an art form out of it.

People don't realize that Minecraft crossplay cannot be implemented without signing into a microsoft account. It would be a technical nightmare or impossible.

How do you expect them to keep things like purchase details across platforms? A unified account is needed for tracking some stuff coming with the update.
So MS didn't want to pay the PSN 30% royalties for these purchases.

That is the big issue... money.

Sony open to MS logins and lose all DLC profit over PSN purchases.

I keep reading that Sony's larger player base is a huge competitive advantage which makes intuitive sense, but is there any actual evidence. Are there multiplat games that have a community on PS4 but have such a low player base on Xbox One such that it negatively affects the experience for Xbox players?

I get that more players means more granular matchmaking in theory, assuming devs support it, but I'm looking for examples of functional community versus broken community between PS4 and Xbox one.

1. Friend John owns a PS4

You logic flow is pretty good. But there is just one problem. PS4 does not have the dominat market share in this case. The Minecraft play together update will work on PC, iOS, Android, Xbox, Switch. The user base of iOS alone dwarfs PS4's. I bet Microsoft is hammering this point while negotiating with Sony.

How else would you implement this system? Do you believe that Sony will give Microsoft PSN account data to use in Minecraft across all different platforms? Will Sony hand out the data so that you can login on iOS/Android?

I really don't see the issue of just allowing cross-play. We already have these different login systems with uPlay and EA accounts anyway.

Man, Sony could turn this into such a big win if they could be bothered. Imagine a bombshell moment like announcing CTR remake, multiplatform, with online cross-play. it's a shame they're not budging on this.

That would certainly turn into a big win for MS. Sony giving them a game they own and giving them access to the biggest multiplayer community.

Am not going to say I know transactions would work but I would imagine Sony are still going to be getting a cut.

BS if this was the case they would have already allowed Rocket League and Pure chesse. They don't want console crossplay they have made that very clear so far.

That's true but this isn't about Minecraft alone, the decision is platform-wide. For Minecraft you could indeed argue it would sooner increase than decrease PS4 sales.

There is one other option: if they are worried their network has more lag than Microsoft's and it could cause issues in fast competitive games. This of course is speculation.

You mean a big MS win? Because you will be helping the MS console community allowing them to play with a way huge community without receiving nothing.

You can still purchase DLC on the Sony store and they get their cut. The mental gymnastics is amazing here.
But you can use DLC attached to MS account without buy on PSN.

You don't pay anything to Sony and you can use all DLCs? What advantage this crossplay ideia has to Sony business.

Do you happen to have a list of xbox one games that have issues with matchmaking. And sony would have the same way huge player base *facepalm*

Because once you open the gates you can't close it. Minecraft and Rocket League may not be a big deal, but what if FIFA 18 and Call of Duty: WWII wants to merge playerbases? Suddenly Sony loses a competitive advantage: people buy a PS4 to play with their friends.

That's why they won't do it. It's just not going to happen.

Not exactly true they improve the experience for the players through faster/more skilled based matchmaking due to increased pool.

Holy shit, you draw a good point, if Sony really did do crossplay with MS they would lose all their DLC first privileges on any crossplay games. (Due to compatibility issues)

That may be why Sony doesn't wanna crossplay.

Probably the fine print in MS crossplay plan.

Not ever going to happen with Minecraft. We have a better chance of seeing Rocket League do cross play between the two consoles. In order for Switch players to go online and play with Xbox users they have to make XBL accounts. I'm pretty sure it would require PAN users to also do the same and I know Sony doesn't want their customers making XBL accounts. Doesn't make sense.

Exactly.

I don't believe any Sony business man will give the OK to lose all the DLC profits they have on PSN.

$$$$ is money after all.
