What is considered the best horror game for the Rift?

Depends on what your preferences are reagrding jumpscares.

If you like jumpscares .... maybe Paranormal Activity or Affected – The Manor?

If you don't like them, maybe Dead Secret or A Chair in A Room:Greenwater?

If you are ok with them but don't want too many of them, maybe Dreadhalls or Narcosis?

Any other "big budget" games like Assembly, Solus Project, Narcosis or Obduction? Walking sim puzzle games for VR?

I have:

I think Lone Echo could be included in this genre too(instead of walking your floating through space). its focused on exploration and solving light puzzles driven by a story. I Don't think theres anything more big budget than that one.

(uhh demo)

Give it a shot! Always looking for feedback.

Just finished the demo (took me 40 minutes to see both zone b and c. I normally don't play games of this genre so my skill level is low but I still enjoyed playing it. Each time I died, I wanted to jump back in and try to get past where I died (Reminds me of Star Fox too in a good way).

I died really early on the first few attempts and when I finally reached the giant red robot, I thought that was the boss. The first few times I fought him I didn't realise the weakness so was just firing my pistol at him until I hit the weakness unknowingly lol. Felt so stupid when i realised the weakpoint haha. He was probably my favourite enemy though due to it having 2 small phases.

The boss felt like it died way too quick (for me it dies after the 3rd missile). At the same time, considering lives are so valuable and carry over to the next zone too, I'm glad it wasn't a drawn out boss.

I did zone B first and its probably my favourite of the 3 zones. Fighting alongside a train was pretty cool and the dragon snake enemy just before it ends looked great (when it ended I was like "nooooo" XD ).

I then tried the first stage multiple times to figure out how to get the 3 intel and enjoyed zone c. The enemies in that one are really cool but I still prefered zone b for the location and scenario.

I didn't get motion sick or anything so the locomotion for me feels great. But it takes a lot to make me motion sick so I'm not a good test subject for that (I play with full locomotion in any game that allows it).

Feedback on things that can be improved:

  • I think the pointer in the menu should be the same as the gun or act more like a finger pointing. Instead of pointing with my hand, the pointer was going up so i had to point my hand way below the start button. I'm using oculus though so I wasn't sure if it was a bug or not.
  • I accidentally grabbed a gun with my non dominant hand (whilst trying to rush through and restart) but couldn't find a way to swap so I had to start game and die to return to main menu to pick up with the correct gun.
  • A pause button to restart the zone would be nice, Whilst searching for and missing intel, it felt inconvenient to hit every obstacle to die and restart the stage.
  • It would be nice to have the equipment backpack at the start to be infront of the player when they get a gameover. Having to press start and wait for the backpack to appear and open up was becoming noticable when I was figuring out the intels. However, adding a pause button with restart would eliminate this issue as I wouldn't be going back to main menu as much.
  • On one attempt whilst searching for the intel I forget to lower the door just before the boss and drove straight through it but didn't take any damage (I had no lives left at the time so I should have died there).

Ideas for things to add:

  • A side dash button - Playing on oculus, there were quite a few spare buttons. It would be nice to have one button on each controller dedicated to a quick dash to the left or right. Like a quick boost as a way to dodge or to grab powerups quickly.
  • If possible, it would be awesome to have side mirrors to see enemies coming from behind since its a bike. I'm guessing this is difficult/taxing though since you have to render per mirror?
  • A temporary dome shield that the player can activate to either protect themselves or charge through an enemy to kill it/ damage if it has more than 1 hit health. Could be a powerup activated by one of the spare buttons on the controller or something that charges up over time/limited use per stage.

I'm guessing you've developed this game alone which is amazing to me. Wish I could code XD (I can only animate :p )

It's not "big budget", but Dead Secret is supposedly good.

Played it a little bit, kinda dig the style, has that old Starfox charme somewhat.

It's a rather difficult game in my eyes, steering the vehicle, using the boardcannons and on top using a handcannon + avoiding obstacles and enemy fire... I died rather quickly. Have to play it again and a little longer to see if I can get used to that.

I hope I'm not opening pandoras box when I say that I would appreciate easy modes for many VR games, or even REZ like tourism modes where you can't die etc. Personally I'm not really looking for a challenge in most VR games (there are exceptions), I just want to experience the "my body in VR" feeling most of the time.

This was pretty fun. Outside of some pop-in and other minor graphic cleanup stuff, I don't really have any complaints. Looking forward to the full release!

Got Thumper, Chronos and I expect you to die on sale (dropped edge of nowhere as I'm not that interested in it right now and it seems to be a 3 hour game. Edge of nowhere atleast has some value for my brothers too so even if its a shorter game it will definately be played by others).

Also picked up soundboxing on steam. Tried one user challenge and couldnt help but smile at it, was pretty fun. Tried to make my own and was disappointed in the creation options. I can't pause or end songs once i'm recording even though the menu is right there to my side, I can either wait out the whole song or quit the game?

Also theres no way to edit what you've recorded? or atleast i couldn't find the options so just closed the game for the day feeling a little bit underwhelmed (the 2 user challenges I did play were awesome though).

Also played Gorn for the 2nd day, hit the wall and tables around me a few more times x_x But its a fun game. Beat the honey badger champion. Some of the weapons really annoy me though like the spear. Its like trying to hit someone with spaghetti so ruins any precision with it. The glaive doesn't seem to be a 2handed weapon from what I tried which is really disappointing. Huge hammer is amazing though lol.

The spear is a little tricky because you have to be fairly precise, and use it only for stabbing, no swinging it around. But if you're good with it, it's so much fun because you can lift enemies up with it, then toss them around or even use them to bash other guys with

I do use it for stabbing although I'm using the back hand to push it through the forward hand to stab enemies (like a snooker cue lol) but it still feels flimsy. A lot of the time it will bend just enough that it fails to stab an enemy. I have picked up enemies and taken hearts out though, but compared to other weapons it just doesn't feel right.

You can pause and quit out during recording - it's kinda janky as it does not show a cursor but you can point your right hand at where it says 'Pause', and that will open the menu to restart, quit to menu, etc. Wiggle your hand about a bit in the direction of the button and watch for it to highlight :lol.

You can't edit recordings, no - it has to be all one take. I like that the beat map creation has to be a one-take performance rather than more accurate, technical 'pause the recording and put balls here'. Also I guess with the motion capture aspect of seeing the author performing the beat map you couldn't have edits in as it would look wierd with them flickering into different poses midway through the song.

Play a few more of other people's songs and you will get a better feel for it and be more at ease creating something of your own - that's how it was for me at least. That is also good for learning what makes an interesting and fun beatmap rather than just punching left and right.

Just played the first 3 levels/chapters of Thumper....holy shit....just blown away by how intense it is. For me its a kind of horror that I haven't experienced before: like the fear of the unknown in space where humans might one day come across beings so advanced, we can't comprehend or understand them and we feel nothing but dread and hopelessness(like something 2D meeting something 3D?). Thats how it makes me feel when playing if that makes any sense at all lol.

thanks will try to get the pause to work properly when i next play it :)

Yeah I see the advantages to no edit options, that way people cant make things that the human body cant keep up with :p There are moments where the wall to punch doesnt register my punch so its more for moments like that where you can select a segment to re do without messing up the rest of the inputs. This can be solved by me learning to punch the wall correctly though so its only a minor thing :)

I'll definately have a proper attempt at recording some as most of the songs I searched for had no challenges/beatmaps. I was searching mostly for egoist and aimer songs though at the time. The one beatmap i did try earlier that made me want to laugh at how fun it was, was "funky dealer" (from jet set radio lol).

Challenge is a big part of the design, certainly, though the final game will have some flexibility when it comes to the difficulty.

Glad you guys got into it!

The game has actually had direct Oculus API support for a long while, which uses more natural angles for things like menu navigation, but unfortunately some issues popped up shortly before release so I temporarily pulled it out and the current version only uses SteamVR. Things should be a bit more natural for Oculus users once that gets sorted out.

Side mirrors are something that I've messed with. Last I left them they looked a bit odd and there were performance concerns, but there's also more optimization to be done elsewhere so it's something I plan on revisiting. There are definitely more pickup items on the way (I like the offensive force field idea), as well as a good amount of QoL structural things like pause menus.

And yeah, this project is me and a music guy. It's been daunting but a lot of fun!

is this the defacto VR thread? (I remember seeing another one or is there a dedicated one for Oculus Rift)?

are there any social games exclusive to the Rift? social as in something like Playroom VR

(and seriously wondering if my 970 can hold up well at all)

you mean a social game where you socialize and play with other vr players?

REC Room will be the one. Has an active crowd and the dev provide new content periodically

There's a thread for SteamVR (for hardware), a Oculus Rift-only thread and High end VR thread. this one is meant to consolidate the Oclus Rift thread and high end VR thread after they ran their courses so yah you can say its a defacto vr thread

The latest GORN update added support for async local multiplayer, as in people with controllers can control the enemy gladiators to try to kill the player in VR.

Edit: Ah... not really exclusive to the rift its on Steam

Played the first two missions in I expect you to die. The opening was pretty cool with its james bond-esque presentation :D I completed the first mission pretty quick (failed once after I shot the window out of curiosity lol. The second mission (window cleaner one) was a lot better and took longer for me to figure out. But, the fact that both were completed in less than 30 minutes together and with only 2 missions(?) left for me to complete, I can't believe they charge so much when its not on sale.

The devs have mentioned adding new missions in soon but it seems like they are still thinking of ideas for new ones, so it'll be a long time before we get any. I don't regret buying it at the price it was on sale for though, if they can keep the quality of future missions similar to the ones I've played in the game it will be worth the full price.

I don't think it being on steam should be an issue for Wilflare, I'm assuming they are new to rift, coming straight from psvr and are unaware that steamvr and rift can play all pc vr games :)

I assume you are talking about the bedroom-clown part? The entire Face Your Fears collection is more a passive experience than an actual game and the clown segment is specifically designed to get you with jumpscares. Most horror games don't push the limits of loud noise jumpscares like that.
Give Dead Secret a chance, it can be considered more of a mystery game than a straight up horror game (very few jumscares).

I have it on gear VR with all scenes purchased. Was disappointed it wasn't transferred over to the rift version though even though its on the same account.

I think the spider one freaked me out the most. Theres a moment where a giant spider crawls down the front of your face from the top so the first thing you see are the creepy front legs dangling down into view. I almost sent the headset flying when I first noticed them XD

Hm still a few hours left of the sale. Can't decide if I should get Chronos or not. Looks interesting but a bit simple.

Chronos is a little simple in terms of character customization when compared to something like Dark Souls, but it's a beefy and challenging (on Hard) game with its own unique pacing. I can't recommend it enough.

I got it off sale, just haven't had chance to start it yet. But its around a 20 hour game and has all around positive reviews and impressions amongst vr community. Plus, its one of the few seated vr games for those times when you dont want to stand :) Only downside is it doesnt seem to support touch controllers from what I read, not sure if thats changed recently though.

i want to set up a private match, i'm 2 people, and would need 4 more to start. anyone available?

It might help to state what game you're trying to set up a match in too. I'm assuming it was echo arena?

Has anyone had issues with audio on Rift? turns out I'm playing any game and after a certain period of time the audio stops working, I have to freaking reset the PC and reconnect the cables, read a lot of pointless solutions and it's getting to my nerves

are you clicking the audio cue on the toolbar to ensure the audio is indeed going through the rift?

Yeah, it's set to Headphones (Rift Audio), I open Oculus home, play 20 minutes and then the problem happens again, I have to restart everything
