Media Create Sales: Week 35, 2017 (Aug 28 - Sep 03)

Principate

Saint Titanfall
The point I was trying to make by saying Switch is more like another PS4 is that these kinds of games have actually found an audience in North America and Europe on Switch, whereas with the 3DS the lion's share of third party software sales came from Japan.

The 3DS got the lionshare of it's performation from relative AAA releases or higher end mid-tier on the platform it was extremely skewered. Which shocking news haven't released on the Switch. The closest would be MH XX which is an up-port of a of a 3 month old game with it's sequel announced for another platform and it's future on the hardware a big question mark. That's it.

Did you never find it odd that the 3DS barely ever recieved niche to low tier support on the platform? Litterally all of the 3rd party support on the switch so far are games the 3DS was not known for.

It's a statement to just how slow/poor the intial support it's getting actuall is rather than it's 3rd party selling potential.

It is becoming increasingly obvious that the Switch isn't a 3DS (or DS) successor in Japan, at least based on how third party games are selling. Only Super Bomberman R, Monster Hunter XX and Ultra Street Fighter II have broken 100k sales - correct me if I'm wrong.

Last japanese numbers i know

Super Bomberman R:

Media-create: 97.123
Famitsu: 92.112 (digital: 5.387)
Dengeki: 111,332

Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers

Media-create: 21.139
Famitsu: 24.897 (digital: 4.040)
Dengeki: 25,018

Pretty good for the Switch
and Splatoon continues it's legs. Nice to see ARMS too
Seems Mina no Golf did well too.
Etrian and Azure.. not so much Not that much was expected

Splatoon 2 up to 67% attach rate without digital on M-C.
.

yeah. it's pretty crazy.

Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology - 21.429
Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2 - 29.887

Soon: Persona Q2, Strange Journey Redux, Etrian Odyssey Festival.

not yet, remember bomberman sold over 500k

We are talking just Japan, where Minecraft has been top 3 since it's release in May. Although we don't have any numbers from Nintendo or Microsoft - only big launches surpass Minecraft on the Japanese eShop. For example if Splatoon 2 has a launch of around 10% digital it's about 65K copies, I'd guess Minecraft's weekly numbers outside of it's launch range between 10-20K depending on Switch stock with the game doing >10K only in weeks with Switch supply under 20K. We are talking about 15 weeks + launch week.
Bomberman R is around 120-150K and to me Minecraft likely passed this amount with the Splatoon 2 launch weeks. It's a huge game among kids and during Obon more kids were able to pick it up.

Also Nintendo have been very smart promoting it via their YouTube Channel.
There are 12 Minecraft Videos by Shinya Arino on Nintendo JP and they are some of the most watched videos on their channel. Currently one of them is the 3rd most watched of all time with 4.3 million views in 2 months the rest range from 1.5 mil to 2 million

You're right. The problem is execs at publishers never saw the Switch as another system to be survived by a library of unique games from the start. So it hasn't had the opportunity to see games released for it that we could make judgements on. What little there is hasn't been great since it's more in line with what the console market has supported over the last few years.

It was poor analysis on my behalf.

50K is great for Switch. Definitely, this console will do well, at least in Japan.

I never thought a golf game would sell that much. And surprised because Zelda and Mario Kart are still there. And Arms does not want to die.

Meanwhile MHXX... This is what happens to late ports. If they want to make that game profitable, probably they should consider bringing it out of Japan. I think that a Switch-only MHXX would sell well worldwide.

50k+ is a nice hold for the Switch, also that Splatoon 2 hold haha.

Let's hope it'll keep doing this well in 2018, but for now Japan seems to love the Switch.

PS. Hi all, first post:D

Skip PS4/Switch and go full PS5/Super Switch.

And yet still no Steam.

Won't really make sense .
P5 assets going to be able to last them a good while for switch .
There upcoming PS4 gaming is going to be interesting to see how advance it is .

Everybody's Golf did okay .
Gust really need to rethink how they do things now.
Need to give there games some more budget and time.

Currently one of them is the 3rd most watched of all time with 4.3 million views in 2 months the rest range from 1.5 mil to 2 million

well thought out post, I can agree with you, Minecraft by now should be the biggest 3rd party and it did it all digital

12./00. [3DS] Jake Hunter Detective Story: Ghost of the Dusk <ADV> (Arc System Works) {2017.08.31} (¥5.370) - 6.132 / NEW

According to Famitsu, previous one sold 5k FW and 10k LTD. Not sure ASW is much happy about those sales, but unlike you're "gimmicky" like Ace Attorney or Danganronpa, a visual novel/adventure game is going to be pretty niche.

Doesn't mean the public aren't thinking it is a successor though.

Too early to say I think, my comparison was premature. It's being marketed more as a home gaming system that you can take with you and it really should just have its own product category as it defines what a console can be. Comparing it to the 3DS, or market perception of 3DS, is probably futile given how 3DS demographics are changing (it's now being positioned as a low-end entry level handheld with the 2DS XL) and the system has been out for six years.

This is great! It's a shame charts don't take into account digital, but I'm glad the eShop charts exist. Was a physical version of Minecraft still planned or are they waiting for the Better Together version?

The Switch = PS4 thing is weird. Maybe for 3rd party pubs that upfront skepticism and hesitation is somewhat apt but for consumers it's not at all. How well do you think Super Bomberman R would've sold as a 2014 PS4 game?

50k for Switch isn't bad at all for now. I'm also glad to see Arms is still charting, I really want it to pass 1-2-Switch soon, it still bugs me.

Koei Tecmo bought them.
(You can literally put the inflection point in the trajectory of quality of their releases at that moment)

I mean, they made plenty of duds prior to KT's acquisition. Ar Tonelico 3 wasn't the best and original Atelier Rorona was frustrating too.

I suppose they were fewer prior to the purchase though, since their output is so much higher now.

This is a fair point. 100k shouldn't be a benchmark for all third party games. Though that's more relevant to my original post than the one you quoted.

Regardless the point I was trying to make in that Switch is not looking like a 3DS successor in the region, regardless of the reasons. The market has changed, and I don't think Koei Tecmo is going to change its mind any time soon - at least based on Japan software sales. Will be interesting to see how it performs in North America and Europe.

problem with your post, your comparing 3rd party sales under 1.6 million switch sold.......I can understand if you showed 3ds 3rd party sales under 1.6 million hardware sold to back it up, but you not, you just making assumptions and just by glancing these numbers Switch 3rd party sales with 1.6 million systems is better than 3ds 3rd party with 1.6 million hardware sold

Gemmol

Neo Member
That makes the Switch more like a PS4 than a 3DS - publishers aren't treating it in the same way.

Software sales might not be the best way to explain why I don't feel the Switch is like another 3DS, but it's obvious that's the case if you look at the kind of games being made for it and the way software sales stack up across regions.

you wrong again, if you look back at neogaf old threads you would see a lot of developers got their dev kit late, so regardless of this year, you can never judge it fully, because those same developers who move on from 3ds will have their games hit in 2018 or early 2019, you making assumptions but not good ones that go with information that was already given, only games that made it this year for Switch were games that were easier to develop so it did not take long to port, for example snake pass which was in development for over a year was able to get on the switch in 2 days, so any games like these were able to move to the switch easier for this year, while next year we should see more games, because many people got their dev kit late

The only explanation for Atlus decisions is they are expecting big drop at sales but took the short path with reused assets and low budget, even if that devaluate their brands.

If they thought 3DS was still in position to maintain numbers of previous entries better luck next time.
___

Once again, we aren't done with underperforming games, September will be a long month.

For EO and the Strange Journey remake I would think so, but I think Persona Q2 will be a potential too much wasted.

Good HW numbers for Switch and Splatoon 2 is showing strong legs as well. DQXI is starting to slow down a bit. It's time to see the Switch version.

Nights of Azure bombing everywhere should be a wake up call for Gust to stop making trash games

The original game was just mediocre all around

Yuppppp. Not sure they'll listen though. They might just double down.

What on earth has happened to Gust lately? Has the small otaku fanbase they pandered to completely abandoned them?

They seemed to be going from strength to strength in 2015 with Atelier Sophie selling well; Nights of Azure opening to amazing numbers etc. Then in the past 12 months they've had Atelier Firis launch with a load of bugs and bomb; Blue Reflection bomb and now seemingly NoA2 bomb as well.

Game quality has gone way fucking down and they've turned the pandering way fucking up. The market has responded in kind.

09./06. [3DS] The Snack World: TreJarers <RPG> (Level 5) {2017.08.10} (¥4.800) - 10.098 / 148.070 (-32%)

Guess it's doing ok so far, though nothing mindblowing.

@hiska-kun, Would you care to do a graph comparison for this vs Yo-kai Watch (just the original, would be cruel to compare it to YW2 :p)? That'd be really appreciated.

10./00. [PS4] Resident Evil: Revelations <ADV> (Capcom) {2017.08.31} (¥2.990) - 9.260 / NEW

Not sure what Capcom is expecting for Switch, but I bet ya anything they'll find a way to overship it anyway.

Happy that Everybody's Golf sold decently. A lot of the players I come across running around on the open courses online are Japanese.

Well saying that swith isn't 3ds such escorts isn't wrong
Clearly it wasn't nor isn't in terms of third party support
Probably due to how Nintendo pitched it to third party prior to release due to the necessity to keep the 3ds revenue stream alive

Doubt FEW will bump significantly the hardware.

Actually, I think it will, simply because Nintendo is probably going to ship more units that week (they generally do for "major" releases). But yeah, not because people will rush to buy FEW, I agree on that point.

Of course at this point, individual releases barely have any effect on weekly sales (well, except Splatoon 2), because of those shortages.

15./11. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild # <ADV> (Nintendo) {2017.03.03} (¥6.980) - 4.904 / 576.067 (-4%)

Ah, some nice legs. Looks like shipments have positive impact on sales, finally.

They'll probably ship more for the two last weeks of September since Pokkén & Fire Emblem will release back to back yeah.

The PS4 and PS Vita versions of the first game each outsold all versions of the second game when combined. Gust really needs to take a breather or something.

Yuppppp. Not sure they'll listen though. They might just double down.

Game quality has gone way fucking down and they've turned the pandering way fucking up. The market has responded in kind.

It's a shame too, even the PS2 days were pretty pander-y but games like Ar Tonelico 2 and Mana Khemia really had enjoyable gameplay mechanics.

Ah, some nice legs. Looks like shipments have positive impact on sales, finally.

If BOTW can maintain this sort of minimum (not sure what the next major release in Japan is, to possibly support that), should reach 600k on Switch by the end of October at least. With Wii U copies, that would leave it just shy of 750k overall.

Gonna be interesting to see if the game can pull off 800k overall by the end of the year.
