PlayerUnknown on the benefits of working with Microsoft

Just curious, but who did you think owned it?

Brendan Greene
or partially owned by him and Bluehole

it thought it would maybe be more of a Minecraft situation
Mojang owned Minecraft, but Notch owned the majority of Mojang.
I do know tho, that Brendan does not own Bluehole. It's not a new founded studio for the Game

That is why i'm curios about who owns the IP

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.
I'm not shitting on this game in any way, but I've watched a few streams of it now and I don't really get why it's so popular.

A lot of the time there seems to be a lot of walking/running across wide open areas followed by inventory management, with very little combat or action.

Am I just watching the wrong streams, or something?

Looking at ps now and Sony reselling ps2 games on the ps store, Sony is much more likely to leave out backwards compatability next generation.

They could work on ps2 and ps1 backwards compatability right now for the PS4 if they wanted to, I doubt it would be a massive unthinkable task. But they don't want to.

The question is, what % of the userbase would genuinely use their PS4 to play their PS1/PS2 games. Ofcourse it isn't unthinkable, but it also sounds to me like a waste.

I honest to god don't know anyone who still keeps a PS2 collection around, let alone PS1. Might just be me though. But it seems pretty silly to put a lot of effort into a feature that will probably get very little use.

It makes more sense on XB1 seeing as they support Xbox 360 and that is still relatively recent.

As soon as your feet hit the ground its a play your way scenario. Want to go fast and loose and shoot everything? Go for it! Everything is a viable strategy

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

It's the tension that is amazing. And dying is not a big deal since you can get into another game in 2 minutes.

I think actually being in the game is the lightbulb moment.

The recent Motor Wars on GTAV, which is a PUBG inspired mode, convinced me this game type can be really fun.

It's hard to simulate the tension and anxiety. When you're running through a field you have no idea when a gunfight is going to start.

I thought the same exact thing and I had barely seen any streams.

Always saw random fools running around and nothing happening.

I think that's what the game nails, the fact that a lot of time nothing is happening, but you know in the back of your mind that it can. There is almost always a feeling that someone is nearby and that the clock is ticking.

I didn't think much of it until I spent some time with it. Now I love it and can't wait to play it on the xbox, even at 30fps.

It shouldn't and it won't. Mario or Zelda will take the crown more than likely.
You are overlooking the possibility of a repeat of 2014 in terms of how the press approaches things. PUBG is going to keep driving video traffic, and of the podcasts I still manage to keep up with, Switch is not anyone's primary gaming platform. If slop like DAI can get in front of a tremendously well reviewed game, PUBG will have no problem. The game is only going to be more popular at the end if the year, especially if the new map is out by then.

Im kind surprised coming from you hanspampel your usually on the up and up with this kind of info. Bluehole has been around since before PUBG.

Bluehole Studio is a Korean based developer founded in March 2007, founded by Gang-Seok Kim. They're the sole developer of TERA, a fantasy massively multiplayer online roleplaying game as well as PLAYERUNKNOWNS BATTLEGROUNDS. Their North-American counterpart is En Masse Entertainment.

It's safe to say that I don't think Brendan own Bluehole at the same time I cannot provided any additional specifics as to their relationship. I do not think it is the same as Mojang.

What I can see happen is basically MS gets 1 year exclusivity from Early Access...then get timed exclusive DLC for the game afterwards that's just as long as Destiny ones. That really sucks but I do see it happening. We have to see how MS gets commercials for this thing though.

Also, seeing that KI just announced cross-network play with Steam so Xbox, WS, and Steam players all play in the same pool gives me hope that MS will do the same with PUBG and giving the ability to have playlists through input type can make this game have a huge amount of players. I also see MS trying to get Bluehole to use Azure servers to keep costs down (and give monies to MS) based on the interview with them having issues with scale.

MS are some of the masters when it comes to hype, Halo, Gears last gen, Titanfall this gen, if MS can get this ready for Christmas combined with Xbox X this could be the biggest hit of the year. Looking forward to see this unfold.

It still looks bad.

How does one game (thats even timed exclusive) change it all?

No offense to PUBG because it is sucessful but... most popular game of the year???

Its more like this is a step in the right direction. Its not enough but its a good step.

Some people are still in Denise huh?

Yeah, i said it's not a small and new founded studio. I knew that. My Minecraft reference was solely because the creator owned the IP (via owning the studio).
Hence why i asked about the IP ownership. PUBG is always portrayed as his game and idea.
So i wanted to know if he has ownership in the IP. Or if Bluehole funded the whole development and got the rights to the IP in exchange. It's liekly he does not have the funds to own or buy even a sizeable minority stake in Bluehole. But maybe he got some shares for the IP and bringing the game to them.

Maybe he gets only royalties for every copy sold, or not even that.
He said "his team at Bluehole"- . That leaves also much interpretation room.
Most of this stuff is mostly never 100% accurately disclosed, so i don't expect any definitive answer. But some more insight is always welcome.

We have a pretty clear picture of this stuff for Titanfall and Minecraft
And whenever it comes to some "buyout" discussion, this is hugely important.
There was a reason, Microsoft could acquire Mojang / Minecraft that easily. A majority owner in Notch who wanted to left the game and studio behind him...
A single person is more likely to sell this instead of a game development / publishing company, who has the hottest game right now

Until you're in that top ten and the last few circles you aren't going to get it.

Streamers can be fun but your heart never really races while watching them.

I have played a decent amount of PUBG and matches where you get straight sniped after walking and collecting loot for 15 mins sucks. After a few of those matches it's time to call it a night. Up until the murder starts has its own appeal. Finding an AKM and a 4x scope or even a frying pan makes me giddy.

You are right though. Top 10 with a tiny circle while shooting from behind whatever cover is available is as about as intense as it gets.

Unfortunately, no one can be told what PUBG is. You have to play it for yourself.

This is no different than any other company throwing money at a publisher for exclusives. Resources/access to proprietary libraries = value = $$$.

Good on Microsoft to pad out the XBO's console exclusive portfolio I suppose, but if anyone is opposed to straight up playing for exclusivity, they should be opposed to this, too.

It's not just about the use though.

It's nice to know that your old games aren't forever tied to old consoles.

As someone who likes to randomly play an old game every now and then, I hate that I HAVE to keep my PS3 set up in perpetuity. I like that I may never seen to set up my OG Xbox or 360 ever again. It's an ecosystem thing, it's a convenience thing. It can't always be strictly ab It the spreadsheet.

I just hope they keep Console and PC players separate, I've played PUBG with a Xbox one controller, it works really well, it's native support is well done, but the aiming and shooting is near impossible, I've killed maybe 3 people with controller vs well over 30 with m+kb, console users would get destroyed

People keep asking this so I'll give my 2 cents.

The game is tense from start to finish and gets progressively more tense the longer you survive. Searching for gear is fun and tense. Maybe you find great gear quickly or maybe you search and search and keep coming up empty knowing that the clock is ticking before the play area shrinks and you will probably have to kill for better gear. Maybe you have almost everything you want/need but that last piece of gear or crucial healing items are nowhere to be found. Maybe someone is hiding behind that next corner/door/rock/tree waiting to kill you. Maybe I should go after that guy and take his stuff. Maybe I should run away. Maybe I should get in that vehicle and make a dash for the center of the next circle. Maybe I should play the edge of the circle, hide in this building, and wait until the last second to move in. Maybe that guy who's footsteps I hear has the same idea but I don't know exactly where he is. Should I go out and try to kill him and take his stuff or should I just wait and hope he leavves or walks into my ambush? I could run ahead now but I might get shot in the back. I could wait but then I might not outrun the circle. Then if you're good enough / lucky enough to make it to the end game, the tension rises exponentially. Every move or non-move is critical. One mistake and it is game over...try again. A good circle in your favor could make it your game to lose. A bad circle could stack the odds against you and all your efforts to this point have gone to waste, or maybe you defy those odds and win anyway by outplaying your opponents who were dealt the better hand. In the end if you win you have bested ~100 other real world human opponents against all odds and it's probably the most exhilirating thing you've ever experienced in a video game.

Anyway, to me that's the hook and I can't put the game down. I think if you enjoy PvP games and are at least a little competitive then it will be a similar experience.

This is definitely not the same thing.
Im against any deal that prevents some users to have access to games.
This is a company putting money to get a better, sooner version of a game.

When that Titanfall deal happened they didn't know how things would go between XB1 and PS4. Overall doesn't seemed to have helped the Titanfall brand either.

Now that publishers know the size of the PS4 playerbase it take a huge investment by MS to try to lock that down.

EA fucked TF2 over.

TF 2 delivered everything players on this forum ask for:

*Great campaign
*Great Reviews
*Fantastic Multiplayer
*Dedicated Servers
*Free DLC
*Recently added co-op mode
*60 FPS
*PS4 Pro Patch

TF2 did everything right, but EA stuck them between BF1 and CoD and had poor marketing. That's why TF2 suffered.

Because this is looking more and more like just straight up exclusivity, and any possible release on PS4 looking more and more improbable, I think I'm just going to resign myself to the fact I'll never get a chance to play this. It's a fucking bad feeling. I hope it does well though, it's always interesting to see a game break into the mainstream consciousness so quickly.

Brendan was hired by Bluehole to be their Creative Director, and then PUBG was made based off his ideas, he's pretty much an employee, its kinda like Miyamoto early on at Nintendo he created Mario but had no stake in the company, after Mario blew up now he has stake in the company, Brendan could possibly get that now that his game is their most successful game. But he def has no power over the sale of PUBG or Bluehole.

Would adding tech from a Microsoft published game prevent it from coming to PS4? Or would the tech just not be used in the PS4 port?

Are you sure it's not a situation like the lighting engine tech Lionhead Studios created for Fable Legends with UE4 where they shared it with Epic later?

Ahh, so it's kind of like that movie Battle Royale with danger zones that keep moving and shrinking.

I'm sold :)

EDIT: Obviously it goes without saying I'm brand new to the game/genre. I think I saw Arma II once a long time ago. There was that DayZ game and a bunch of clones (couldn't remember which was the developer that was doing skeevy stuff with renaming the game/etc)

I haven't seen the movie but the premise is literally based on it. There are even cosmetic items in the game straight from the movie.

Lol. They're helping to develop the best possible version of a very popular game for their console. FOH with console version bs.

They are supporting an independent studio in making sure that this new IP will launch on Xbox sooner and better than it otherwise would have.

This is so much better than paying Square Enix to delay Tomb Raider on PS4

That's an incredibly short-sighted way of looking at it. Good senior personal is hard to come by, not something you can just throw money at. But I guess you did succeed in managing to downplay this, well done.

This small dev (isn't that small, but thats not my main point...) just generated 300,000,000 in revenue (minus steams cut) over the past 5 months and its not slowing down apparently. They need no ones help at this point.

Plus loot crates.

Yeah, totally different situation than Tomb Raider or Destiny 2 exclusive shit.

As someone who has to budget for games, I don't have the cash to buy one any time soon. And honestly I don't have the room.

As for why I think this might not even come out on PS4? Microsoft is pouring a rather large amount of effort into making this game work on its system. Enough that I'd think they'd funnel even more in to prevent it from touching their console's primary competition.

Microsoft holds sway, but I doubt they hold enough sway to keep this game off the leading console platform sitting at 60+ million units sold.
As said earlier, they'd have to pay exorbitant amounts of cash to offset the potential losses. This is by all accounts a timed exclusive deal.
