Apple AirPods | OT | Try not to lose them

So, quick update on this. I Walk with my iphone SE in my front shirt pocket, and for the hell of it, I tried turning it upside down (lightning/headphone pointing up), and I'll be fucking damned if my walk home wasn't 100% perfect. That includes multiple spots that were guaranteed to give me shit beforehand. It was completely fine now.

I'm going to have to test this further, especially at one spot in the city that is absolutely brutal, but hilariously, this seemed to provide a decent workaround for me.

Thanks for the tip!
Glad to hear it worked out for you as well! Ports up is also the orientation that I use (I honestly wonder why I didn't before, I can pull out the phone unlocked this way). Must be something with the antenna design - Jobs would say we carried them wrong before ;)

Oh that's kinda funny, but yeah I always instinctively put my phone in ports up. It's just the way it goes in from naturally holding the phone. So I guess I never had that issue, is it like this on most iPhones or just the pre-6 bodies? I have a 6 Plus.

Also, I swear I'm getting volume differences between my iPad and iPhone. I feel like I have to have my AirPods on max volume when I'm listening on my iPad Pro (iOS 11) compared to my iOS10 iPhone. Will test out more later

Unless I was missing something, but can you not AirPlay video to an Apple TV and keep the audio on the AirPods? I was hoping to watch something on TV but continue listening through my AirPods as to not wake up a household. I couldn't get it to work.

You'd have to connect the AirPods to the Apple TV since that's now the source of the audio playing.

Quick is correct for now, but that might be possible once Airplay 2 comes out in the fall?

Does this apply only to new apple tvs, or do I have to initiate it as an old fashion Bluetooth connection? It was either a first or second generation Apple TV I was using.

Also, for what it's worth, you can use the HDMI dongle for an iPhone and connect an iPhone to a television set, and then use the AirPods as the audio out.

I can confirm the HDMI dongle method works very well

Airplay 2 is only coming to the newest Apple TVs, not a first or second gen. However AirPods should work as a generic Bluetooth device if your ATV supports it (I honestly don’t know, I’ve never used those generations)

3 days into owning it, it's pretty good so far.

I did run into some minor interference at work, though I am in a busy area and there's plenty of wireless devices running everywhere.

Brianmcdoogle's question about using it on an Apple TV got me curious about hooking them up to my PS4 Pro and it unfortunately doesn't work. But I have a PS4 headset anyway. Just thought I'd try.

I habitually turn off Bluetooth when I'm not using it, and anytime I turn it back on, I can't connect my AirPods. I'd have to restart my phone to get it working.

Am I doing something wrong (other than switching Bluetooth off)?

I mean yeah, step one is stop turning Bluetooth off. It drains essentially no power in standby.

Other than that I can’t think of anything that would cause that. But what do you mean by can’t connect? Like it spins forever? Can you put the AirPods in pairing mode and see if they connect without having to restart the phone?

Has anybody had either 1 or both AirPods have trouble charging in their case? If so, were you able to fix the problem and how did you fix it?

My wife had the issue. It's a problem with each pod being on different firmware. I can't remember exactly how it's fixed, but I think it was one pod being left in the case for 5 minutes, followed by the other pod by itself so they're on same firmware. Then they should be able to charge and sync together.

I love these headphones, have had them since launch. Just wanted some perspective on a use scenario and battery life though, generally I use it for a couple hours to watch something or listen to music, but the other day I used it to connect to my mac to speak on skype, while gaming. They were 100% and died after an hour which really shocked me. I guess using it for both sound and chatting really drained the battery?

It's not that because if I push down hard on the AirPod that is having trouble charging into the case It will start charging again.

Try to blow out the affected slot with some dusting tool, I had a similar problem and a GAFfer recommended this which fixed it. Was just some tiny dirt particle sitting at the bottom which hindered the snap-in charging I guess.

Incase you missed it, another W1 headset, Beats Studio3

Wish there was an all white option for the Studio3. I am really liking W1 equipped headphones and the iCloud integration is great if you are in the Apple ecosystem. I am looking for a new pair of W1 headphones for home use (My sweaty Powerbeats3 aren’t going to cut it anymore). Disappointed to see micro USB on these headphones.

There is a white option but I assume you don’t like the gold accents?

Can’t believe they’re still using micro USB but I will be picking up the black matte when it comes out. I was tempted to get the solos because I was waiting for the inevitable studio3 announcement.

Many are complaining about it, which I agree with, but we forget android community is still a massive portion of their sales. Looks like studio4 will finally drop it, in 2 years which seems to be the time the new versions come out

That’s definitely the reason for keeping micro-USB for this generation, the audience for beats expands far beyond the normal Apple ecosystem. Hopefully next one has USB-C

USB C is great, but I’ll take a guess and saying 95% of the public has no idea was USB C even is, it’s still a long way from reaching any type of mainstream penetration

Sure, but the small stuff is how you get there. Nothing wrong with throwing a USB-A to USB-C charge cable in the box

...hate me...

But the Android community on the high-end is already on USB-C as well.

I think the reason is just being cheap and not retooling to change the connector.

I agree, but I understand their reasoning also. Luckily The battery is so good on these that you won't have to worry about charging this all the time

The android community on the high-end? You're acting like the majority of android users are using high-end phones

I also think it is a flimsy and easy to break connector.

Not like Lightning is super durable either, let's be honest here.

The ONLY reason I’m at all okay with micro-B is purely selfish, but I bought a headphone stand that has a micro-B charger on it for my gaming headset so this will work just as well

https://www.twelvesouth.com/product/fermata

If I didn’t have that, I’d wish it was lightning/USB-C

Daaaaaamn, that's slick. I've been looking for a headphone stand and that might have just made it all the way to the top of my list.

Since we're on the topic of Beats headphones, I was wondering how good the current Studios Wireless ones are. I might be able to get a pair for a very low price from my job. Figured I'm just missing out on the W1 chip and a few enhancements.

I own the first version made by Monster and it was a pain in the ass having to replace the battery. Built-in batteries on the current set make it more appealing to me.

The connector is great. The cables are trash, specifically the poor flex stess management where the cables start.

I totally misunderstood what was said about Micro USB earlier. Was thinking the cables themselves, because the official Apple cables aren't the most durable. But you are correct with the connector/port itself being more durable.

(If this isn't cool, then skip over or delete...)

Selling my unopened box of AirPods for $140.

Got them as a gift, don't want/need 'em.

PM me!
