iPhone X | OT | November 3

Legit feel bad for anyone picking up an 8, lol

They will next year. There were a bunch of articles that said they wanted to add it under the screen and couldn't get it to work.
Why would they add something less secure than Face ID? Accept that it's dead and move on.

Eyes have to be open for it to work

I'm sort of disappointed with the bezels, larger than I expected from the leaked renders. The hump doesn't seem that bad though of apps account for it properly.

Really? There were some renders side by side with a 7 and made it very clear that they had the same side bezels. I don't mind the hump either.

Doesn't this happen every year? New iPhone comes out and it's full of people complaining about the price or lack of features.

I have no interest in upgrading, but Apple will sell millions as always

I just watched the Verge hands-on; you can simply point the X at the owner's face to unlock it? How the hell is that more secure than a traditional pin?

It requires the phone's owner to actually be present. A traditional pin someone can learn just by looking over your shoulder.

I'm wondering if this will be a yearly trend now at apple

Normal model and one hyper pricey and premium.

Hope not

Will wait for x-S with Touch ID embedded on the screen

Lots of GAF seems to hate the phone but the press reactions seem very positive.

If you go back to almost every iPhone OT, the first 20 or so pages are just Android people coming in to give their hot takes on how about how stupid people are for buying it and about how [X] phone is so much better. Then the benchmarks/reviews come out, a lot of those people suddenly disappear followed by 100 pages of preorder woes because it's inevitable a nightmare to get it. And there's two preorder dates for this time around so it's going to be a fun two months.

Then there's a couple of pages of actual discussion from people who actually own the phone at the end, but that's usually quite minor.

When you realIze apple will never ever drop bleeding edge tech you will understand what they do. They are all about putting things out when the tech is fully viable. Also I'm curious to see if they solved burn-in issues on OLEDs. I worked for Samsung for 3 years in the experience stores. Every single display had some level of burn in. It's a dirty secret about oleds. Not sure if Sammy fixed it in their displays. Since I left in the last 2 years. I'll have to go look at display units.

The iPhone X is for apple enthusiasts and people with extra disposable income and there's nothing wrong with that. The marginal gain is worth it. The 8, 7, 6s, and SE is still available.

Pretty sure these will be sold out for months

"Apple is doomed" is comparable to "This next Marvel movie will fail" in terms of how accurate the internet predictions usually are.

Apple's lineup is just following NVIDIAs GPU lineups these days. From the rebranding old cards with slightly higher clock speeds and the $1000 premium card.

The price is a joke. This is half the price

How can anyone justify this? Also before anyone talks about customer service, you could lose this phone, buy another and still come out ahead.

Doesn't that only have an LCD? With a lower resolution, and pitiful CPU in comparison? That's like saying why buy a Mercedes Benz when you can buy a Toyota. Some people want more quality out of their stuff.

Can't believe they stuck with a proprietary connection instead of going full on USB C. The idea of not being able to charge your $1,000 iPhone on your $2,000 Mac right out of the box is insane.

This is what the music app looks like on iPhone X. I quite like it. Darker colors and especially blacks blend much nicer. The apps with just white ears at the top look weird.

That looks great because it keeps the card metaphor, I agree. But it also keeps the status stuff at the top

Agree. Its not full screen. With the top where the camera is, man it will get on my nerve watching a video widescreen in it, constsntly seeing this black part.

Nice try apple, its a great 95% full screen phone.

It's the same issue Motorola ran into with the Moto 360. It's hard to see where else they can put the camera and sensor though.

Why does this feel like yet more catch-up with Samsung?

Seriously, this doesn't remotely look like anything interesting. I don't think Apple has announced a compelling phone in fucking forever.

No TouchID, Face ID seems like an iffy replacement, that fucking notch that cuts off video. I think next year they'll just scrap the design they've been using since the 6 and use the X design for their regular and plus phones.

and face ID seems better than Touch ID from everything they showed at the presentation. They're basically making authentication something you never have to think about. It's not something you need to "do" anymore. It's just a natural thing you'll be doing anyway i.e. looking at your phone.

I feel like that's better. More secure, more usable in various scenarios i.e. gloves and when there's moisture, etc...

Looks all good to me.

Surely they’ll fix that video playback thing with the notch? I hope apps like Netflix support proper zooming of wider aspect ratio content

Because according to reports they have been trying to add that feature for a while now and I doubt they would just ditch all of the R&D that went into that. Additionally, when they add it back they will act as if it's a revolutionary new feature and people that love Apple will then flock to purchase the new version. It's not exactly unheard of for them to refine something and act like it's brand new to get sales.

Does this shitty mspaint mockup not look better than the X? It's straight up less visible screen and has bezels but IMHO looks better just by having corners and not having the camera notch. Plus you could do stereo front facing speakers or something if you really wanted to go all out.

why would they adjust the prices when it's a better phone than the 8, which is comparable in price to the 7?

I mean next year. I mean, is the next X also going to be 1000 bucks or is it going to slot into the current iPhone 8 slot?

Apple's product line currently is a bit messy.

I'm going to buy either the 7 or 8 this year. The notch at the top of the X is distracting, and there aren't enough features to warrant the price IMO. There was really no reason to get rid of Touch ID, and I don't find face recognition appealing

What exactly do you want them to fix?

16:9 content will be fine. No notch over it if you don't want. Wider aspect ratio stuff will have the notch covering it, which I don't think there's any way around (unless you want a four way letterbox). Can't say I really want to watch movies on a phone but I suppose it would be annoying.

The UI looks a little clunky to me, swiping up for home, moving to the right to then open multi-tasking, swipe down from different parts of the screen for notification shade or control center, it all just looks a bit messy. Guess the double tap on home button to bring the screen down for reachability is also gone?

Do people really stare at their phone when they unlock it? Most of the time when I’m unlocking my phone it’s a passive thing while I finish up what I’m doing or I intend to look something up so I heap my phone press the home button, unlocking it in the process and the look over. It’s not the end of the world but it’s goong to be a change.

I like the notch more than this. In videos and games they can just cover the notch with a black bar.

Not sure if I agree with this design, but the one benefit is that you wouldn't have to awkwardly reach to the way end up the phone to unlock it.

Better have a case or this will happen.I just don't see the point having glass back if people will cover it with to protect from breaking.

you don't have to "stare" for face ID to work. It's literally just a glance at your phone when you're using it and that's it. People are overthinking Face ID. The whole point of it I think is it just removes you from ever having to do something. It'll just be unlocked when you're using it, and authentication within apps and whatnot will just be this natural occurrence as you use your phone.

That would get demolished for looking too similar to a galaxy s8/LG g6/v30 and being announced last out of all of them.

The problem with paying that much for a phone is that its obscene. Youre inadvertently Supporting elitism and the superiority of the upper class. Some would say paying so much for a phone is morally wrong.

I already dont think about it. From the time i pick up the phone to it hitting my line of sight its already unlocked, wtf are you talking about. And this is gen 1 TouchID.

You done convincing yourself yet?

I think you're giving it too much credit, especially with the info we have currently.

Also, you still need to reach down and swipe up- pretty much the same amount of effort as resting your thumb on the Touch ID
