iPhone X | OT | November 3

Even my buddy who is a complete Apple fanboy (owns all Apple products and gets a new iPhone every year) isn't buying the iPhone X due to the price.

You can do that.

Sweet!

I have to ask, what kind of people do you guys hang out with where you are worried that someone would take your phone from you, and then without asking you, point it at your face in order to unlock it and snoop around? Like, this seems like an issue with a very low probability of happening but everyone is so worried about it.

Mean brothers and sisters.
Nah, I'm not worried about it.

Lol.

I legit had no idea that they also announced the iPhone eight. I'm getting no tv signal here and only barely getting an Internet connection. So most of my news comes from Facebook and GAF. And everyone wants to talk about the X.

The eight is kinda like a 7s. so no one cares about it.

Yeah the iPhone 8 is essentially an iPhone 7S, but they decided to call it 8.

plus the sensor probably has a distance thing. so they'd have to be near you - and if they're pointing a lit screen at you, you'd know.

Why do people keep saying this?

I've seen numerous videos/images where two pillarboxes appear (effectively adding bezels, like every other phone). Further, even with the pillarboxes the screen size is effectively the same size as the 7/8+, yet with a higher pixel density and smaller hardware form factor.

So, with the added bezels (both on the top and on the bottom of the screen), for watching 16:9 video, the usuable screen would be 5.5"!?

actually, I was on/off the X but I think I'll get it. It'll easily last me the next 4+ years and I can't wait now. I'm quite annoyed it such a long wait for it though. I was ready to buy a new phone in the next 2 weeks.

Maybe he would have the money if he didn't buy a new iPhone every year.

lol

For everyone worried about "face thieves", try to think it through. Even if someone manages to unlock your phone and run away with it, they won't be able to change your passcode, disable FaceID, make purchases with your phone, etc. Potential thieves aren't going to be wiping your phone and selling it based on their ability to point your phone at your face and run off.

The most unsavory of characters; I'll have to guard my face closely now.

If I try out Face ID for awhile and end up not liking it, I'll just turn it off and go back to unlocking my phone with a passcode. Did it for years, it was fine. The Touch ID on apple phone has always seemed worse to me than other devices (my brief stint with a Pixel had a much speedier and more accurate reader).
Don't know which phone you used, but the fingerprint reader is markedly faster on the 6s Plus and later—takes less time to read a fingerprint than it does to click Home.

What I'd really like is the ability to turn Face ID off for unlocking the phone, but then leave it on for when I'm in the phone (so I can use it in apps). That would be great.
This is literally what I do with Touch ID now. Passcode to unlock phone, touch to authenticate in apps (like banking, 1Password, etc.)

I see no reason it couldn't work the same way with Face ID, especially since it sounds like the APIs are exactly the same (and knowing how they operate from an app perspective, it makes a lot of sense to me.)

.

maybe the phone will have a feature, where if you're not using the phone, it autolocks - if you enable it.

"ULTRA SECURE MODE"

Phone continually scans your face when in use and will lock immediately if it doesn't find you.

only thing I guess is how much battery would that use tho. X_X'

Again what?
I'm just saying that pointing the phone at your face, and if you look at it, it will unlock.
And it does.

I'm not talking about theft or anything.

I mean... if we aren't talking about theft or anything concerning.. what are people freaking out about? I figured all of the "they can hold it up to your face to unlock it" is coming from you don't want your phone to be unlocked.. something unwanted.. if it's not a security or safety concern... what does it matter?

Seems to me that just the other day I saw a video of phone thieves in action—they grab unlocked phones as they're being used by people staring at their screens instead of their surroundings, then quickly fall back into a crowd to get away.

That attack works even if you have no Touch or Face ID enabled.

Went to bed wanting the 8.
Woke up wanting the X.

you can steal anything that way. It doesn't even matter at that point with a snatch and grab.

This argument makes no sense to me. The majority of people don't buy their phones outright. The phone price is commonly distributed over 24 months adding to an increase of 10 or 15 dollars month over existing iphone prices. Now if you think its a bad value proposition sure. However, the price isn't that impactful in the current phone price distribution model that most people use.

I hope it underperforms and makes Apple realize that they can't get away with these prices.
There are Android phones at this pricepoint.

Hardly no one buys a phone outright.

I mean even if it could be done from a decent distance...it sounds like a pretty rare occurrence to me lol. Just something for people looking to complain about the phone I suppose.

You do. The majority of phone buyers do not.

I have iup. I also don't have a phone discount. However, I don't sink full phone price. I prefer to have a 0 interest loan and distribute the price.

Yeah, the display times out and goes to sleep. 🙄

And...? The thief still wouldn't be able to change your passcode, change your Apple lD password, or disable TouchID or FaceID.

It will most likely be sold out instantly

You have to realize the s8+ (At launch) and note 8 are similar prices; why would apple want to lower it from a business standpoint when they know it will set like hotcakes?

If people can't afford the X, they have other options.

gotta say with the bloody phone being so expensive, it makes the bickering on the gaming side with re: console re: that $50 price difference (eg. x1x) seem like absolute nonsense.

And then what? You can't use a stolen iphone these days. Everything is linked to AppleIDs. Generally stealing iphones is no longer lucrative.

I mean... they're not "getting away" with anything. if you want an iPhone but don't have $999, get an 8, or a 7, or a 6s, or a 6, or an SE... if you want an X, there is enough tech in there that at the same margins as all of the rest of those, it warranted a $999 price tag.

"apple can't get away with charging 50% more for a device that has a 50% higher BOM!!! They must be stopped!"

wut?

There are no discounts on phones even in the US. It's just a monthly payment plan. I don't know where you are, but can't you also buy from Apple using the payment plan and keep your unlimited data?

I'm out of touch with gaming, what's the 50$ price diff?

My understanding is that the phone already is capable of telling when you are looking at the phone during use, and it won't autodim and autolock it if you are giving it your attention. In other words, you could hypothetically set the auto-lock interval to something very short, and it would then quickly lock when you aren't looking at it.

Unfortunately, current iOS doesn't give you, like, a 5 second option on the autolock timer, because that'd be way too short for current iPhones that can't tell when you're looking at them. Maybe that's something they'll add specifically for the X?

I think my plan of attack is to wait until October 27th and attempt to preorder the X. If the site craps out on me and it looks like I won't get one any time soon, I'll just opt to get the 8+ and plan to upgrade next year.

Your buddy doesn’t sound like an Apple fanboy, more like one of the casual masses who also buy Apple products (if they are cheap enough)

Yeah the touch ID is crap, at least for me that works in an industry and use my hands a lot, I guess my fingerprints gets scratched or something. So for me face ID will definitely be an improvement. I really want the X but the price is just ridiculous imo. Apple has just lost it from my perspective.

Every year the Apple fans say this after a keynote. And every year, when it's released, they're crying that it's 2 months out of stock.

The size ALONE is worth it. Bigger screen than a Plus in the size of a regular 7. Hell yea.

So what do people see selling more? The 8 or x?

I'd be waiting for the X. But hoping to have a playaround with the 8 plus. I have a Note 8 coming for work, so exciting times.

8, due to stock availability.

X will be sold out forever.. but will also be produced slower (rumored at 10K per day)

I'll actually be up at 2am local time in October and I still am not expecting day 1. but I'm guessing by 6-8am local time that day we'll already be looking at 4-6 weeks. so if I can get 2 weeks or less at 2am I'll be happy.

They're going to make an iPad without a home button next right? Now that would be nice
Now that would be sth nobody could complain about. Gestures on the iPad are top notch and work extremely well. I only use the home button for Touch ID.
I don't see it (iPad with FaceID and no home button) happening soon though, maybe 2019.

I can't decide between white or black. I don't like the bling of the steel on the white, but when it gets scratched I can polish it. Can't do that on the black steel of the black. I also prefer the white glass.

But the black looks so sleep with the black steel and reminds me of my iPhone 4.

So I'm not particularly impressed by the X for what it seems like it's going for, an premium phone in a line of premium phones as apple has always seen themselves since they let the 5C die and never be replaced.

That being said aren't all the rumors basically yelling that there's going to be stock issues regardless?

I imagine this thing might be sold out for a very long time until Apple can make a reasonable supply line happen

Even then it will take some slew of underwhelming products/phones before apple fails to sell ridiculous amounts of new phones, they're far too trusted to deliver a strong product regardless of what I may think of their latest innovations and direction.
