iPhone X | OT | November 3

8, due to stock availability.

X will be sold out forever.. but will also be produced slower (rumored at 10K per day)

I'll actually be up at 2am local time in October and I still am not expecting day 1. but I'm guessing by 6-8am local time that day we'll already be looking at 4-6 weeks. so if I can get 2 weeks or less at 2am I'll be happy.

I ordered my 7 plus at 2pm the day of ( after being disconnected at 2 AM) and was slapped with November shipping estimate. This will be horrible.

Is anyone else actually more interested in an iPhone 8/8 Plus than the X? Before the conference, I was set on getting the X, but now I'm not so sure.
I am getting the iPhone 8 Plus. I was burned as an early adopter of the iPhone 4 and iPad Air 1, and was burned in both cases. I swore I would not buy the first iteration of an Apple product. I moved myself to the "S" cycle for phone releases and I only buy iPads that are subsequent iterations.

its ridiculous. higher than a mac book pro

Also interesting that it seems to be using iOS 11.1

This argument makes no sense to me. The majority of people don't buy their phones outright. The phone price is commonly distributed over 24 months adding to an increase of 10 or 15 dollars month over existing iphone prices. Now if you think its a bad value proposition sure. However, the price isn't that impactful in the current phone price distribution model that most people use.
Well he did preorder the 8 Plus so clearly that price difference made an impression on him.

I can't decide between white or black. I don't like the bling of the steel on the white, but when it gets scratched I can polish it. Can't do that on the black steel of the black. I also prefer the white glass.

But the black looks so sleep with the black steel and reminds me of my iPhone 4.

Same. I like the darker steel of the black, but now the front is black I like the look of the white. Also the steel would match my SS apple watch..

iPhone X looks really good, but not $1000 really good. I'm into all things Apple but honestly on the overall look of "everything screen", the S8 looks more attractive because of the bezel less screen on the sides and no weird shapes protruding inside the screen like the iPhone X.

Just imagine how the Galaxy S9 is going to look! Or maybe Samsung will also skip the number 9 and go to Galaxy S10.

Apple removed 3D touch switching in iOS 11.
Looks like they removed a feature in older phones so the new phones would have more exclusive features.
.............for real?

On iOS 10 I can switch between the two most recent apps, and with a stronger press I can bring up the full app switcher. Are both features gone?

I could see this being a case where even if you order in the initial hour, you might not get your phone until January.

At that point I might settle with an 8 for a year. Or a 'throwaway' 6s and then hand it down in the family without worrying about resale value

Best round up vids on everything yesterday? I had to miss the entire thing and I don't really have anyone I go to on YouTube for this type stuff since I don't use it much.

did you really use that? ... i never found the gesture to be all that intuitive or reliable. Like, at least half of the time, i didn't switch from Facebook or Instagram to the last used app, but rather triggered the app's camera feature, or went 'back' in safari, or went to the list of conversations in iMessage.

a gesture that requires a pressured edge swipe always felt weird, especially since regular edge swipes are already a thing in almost every app.

I got release day at ~6am for the 7, but it also didn’t have the numerous credible supply shortage reports that the X has. This is going to be bonkers. Apple is going to sell every unit they can manufacture for the rest of the year.

This. If you used it, that sucks that it’s gone for you. But it as so friggin unreliable and janky that I gave up. The new gesture on the 8 looks way better.

The X looks so half baked. Wait for 2nd gen

I got burned on the 6+. Never buy a first iteration of a new design.

The 8 is the best phone of a boring product.

With that Geekbench score, it goes to show how underutilized these processors are.

Could easily replace mobile workstations with the right OS and peripherals.

3D touch in general seemed weird to me until I got used to it, but after it clicked it worked all the time for me. Granted I rarely used it to directly switch between apps, just to bring up multitasking. I was hoping at least that was still in, but alas. It just sucks because I recently got a 6S and was enjoying the feature, but back to the home button it is.

That's my stance too. First buyers are almost like beta testers when it comes to new iterations. Pretty curious about what unwanted surprises we'll get with the X.

I get that “half-baked” is the fun word that people are clinging onto, but do you actually have reasons for saying that or did you just want to drive by post?

I mean... the bump has been their since the 6. The notch is clearly not going away next gen given the tech in it. TouchID isn’t coming back short of some catastrophic marketing nightmare of FaceID. So would you care to explain what I’m missing or did you just want the chance to say “half baked” in an Apple thread?

You prolly will deny it but FaceID is completely half baked. I saw a video yesterday, can't remember from which site, i think 9to5mac, where the guy asked the apple employee to close his eyes, and lets see if it'll unlock. Guess what it UNLOCKED.

Then he said something along the line of yea, they will probably need to get that fixed. So Half baked.

But good luck on your purchase though. I'll go for the XS next year. Thanks for beta testing it to make my purchase all the more worth while.

What was wrong with the 6+? I still have mine and it's great.

Severe lack of ram. Same ram size as a normal 6, but pushing more pixels, so it ends up performing worst. Now im the type that only use my phone nowadays for simple texting, light browsing, camera and stuff, so i don't really care too much anymore, but apps and web pages, just constantly reload.

this whole half baked thing is bordering on bad meme.

that being said, the 6+ did have the weak structural points.. that were fortified on the 6S+ Though I would hardly qualify that as "half baked".

I would say if anything it probably had an additional year of development time. Just a pet theory of mine but I very much believe that they wanted this to be the 7 but when they found out touch ID wasn't an option and I am guessing they were not satisfied with facial recognition at the time, they just iterated on the 6. But I don't know I just use past trends as predictors. I still think they would have done something special for the 10th anniversary even if they got this out last year like my wild theory implies.

To be frank, that’s kind of what I expected from a phone like this for a while now: a Switch-like dock that could connect to a monitor or television and transform into a computing workstation. If Windows phones took off, I think they’d be there by now running full Windows 10 (or at least 10 S) using a dock or something similar.

the X was never going to be the sole model. We've known this for several months. I don't understand why this theory keeps getting repeated.

Wut, 6+ was a fantastic phone, only downsize was it's 1GB ram.

I'm interested in the X thanks to the added stuff but I'll pass it this year and get the next version instead. My 7 plus will last me some time

I really wish there were a chance of getting a good, in-depth FaceID 1.0 vs. TouchID 2.0 comparison *before* the iPhone X preorder date rolls around.

The original 6+ was a fantastic phone for like that first year. After that that 1GB made it a buggy POS.

I have never upgraded my phone after a year but was fucking counting the minutes until the 6s Plus could be in my hands.

I went through alot of strings of videos on youtube for the X, so i cant remember. If you don't want to believe me that's fine. Just stating what i saw on video.

The 6 and 6+ was definitely a great phone for its time. I just don't think its a great phone for someone that likes to keep their phone for 3+ years. Im still using it btw, the battery is still a champ and i don't do any heavy lifting on it, so im fine it.

no chance. I'd go so far as to guess that X will ship with iOS 11.1 They are still hammering out tiny kinks.

lol.. I mean what am I supposed to do with this? "I saw some damning stuff that no one else has commented on seeing. I don't remember where though and if you don't want to believe me, fine."

These phones have multi-year development cycles so your pet theory doesn't make much sense. The timing is all off.

When my 6S was caseless, it worked perfectly for me.
With the Apple leather case it was too hard to enable it.

EDIT: Also, you only have to press down on the left hand side to enable it, then you can slide over normally without pushing.

You don;t need to do anything with it. Believe it, don't believe it.

Dont care.

IIRC The iPhone 6+ had bending issues that caused phones to stop working, the blurry camera issue, and the fact that the 1GB caused a lot of slowdown.

They never admitted anything about the bending and still forced people to payout if their phone stopped working despite YouTube repair channels saying it was some sort of manufacturer issue that caused damage to the board when it bent. They replaced the camera issue and the 1GB RAM was them cheaping out.

Is the control center only brought up by sliding down on the upper right or does it do the same thing on the left?

blue tooth keyboard + signal out to a screen and some sort of "ios desktop mode" so you can do word processing / video work etc el. That'd be a game changer. - I guess they have an airplay feature also on these things. some sort of screen mirroring.

I have a cable somewhere in the house that allows my ipad to connect to the tv.

Anyone ever order new iPhones in bulk for business? I wonder if it's solution that will get me the X on day one. I know my CEO will probably want one as well and I might be able to do an order for a few.

I don't know if half baked is the right word or not but for me, for a £1000 phone this product has too many compromises.

Yeah I don't unlock my phone when it's flat down on a table that often, but I do it often enough that having to pick it up is annoying when I didn't have to do that previously. Why are users now having to make that compromise when it costs more than ever.

The edge to edge display is totally comprised by that notch. Whether you like the look or not it interrupts the UX in too many cases.

Camera bump is still ugly. Yeah they've had it for a little while but that's still not good enough. It's a weakness and it's not being addressed.

Same with the in box charger. It supports fast charging but only if i buy the proprietary cable. I already have one but that still pisses me off. For 1k I want a product that supports fast charging and ships with the required goods.

Also an OLED display but no AoD. Why? AoD is one of the best things about OLEDs yet you don't get it here. This is a software issue so it's slightly different but at this point iOS is missing like 5/6 key features and the hardware is no better than anything else out there.

So yeah whether it's half baked or comprised or whatever...it seems like they were desperate to get something big out there and are charging big money for it without giving you something in return.

Also - less important to me personally but the fact that this product is delayed and things like the wireless charging mat aren't available at launch tells me it's rushed. Apple don't usually roll like that

These phones have multi-year development cycles so your pet theory doesn't make much sense. The timing is all off.

Yes, with the multi-year development clock starting at the introduction of the 6. So they had 3 years instead of 2. Do you think Steve Jobs would have let the same exact model phone come out year over year?

K.

Well again, thanks for beta testing my next purchase.

No but seriously. Back up your claims.
I saw a video yesterday from Verge where they have the employee close his eyes, and it worked perfectly.

I also saw the 9 to 5 Mac video and they didn't do the "eyes closed" test, so it wasn't them.

I slept on it and I think I´m going to go for the X. I just don´t see the point of going from a 7 Plus to an 8 Plus. I´ll see how things look supply wise on preorder day. Hopefully I can get one within a month or so. Anything longer than that and I´ll just stick to the 7 Plus. I´ll just finish up the IUP without upgrading and sell my 7 Plus when the next group of phones come out next year.

I do think I´ll have to stick to the 64 GB. I´ll be dropping down from 128 but I never come close to filling my phone since I stream video and music.
