Game titles that sound like they're in a different genre than they actually are

If I had heard the name "LittleBigPlanet" and nothing else, I would've assumed it was either a Populous-style strategy game or, alternatively, an EcoQuest-style edutainment game from the 90s.

Chrono Trigger sounds like it should be a shooter (think Timesplitters.)

Monday Night Combat sounds like a wrestling game.

Bust-A-Move sounds like a rhythm game, not helped by the existence of Bust-A-Groove, which actually is (and is even named Bust-A-Move in Japan.)

"Zelda: Twilight Princess" sounds like a Barbie game to someone who doesn't know what Zelda is.

Minecraft could have just as easily been an RTS along the lines of Warcraft and Starcraft set in the near future and based around rival factions building underground empires.

name more.

You mentioned Chrono Trigger, and I Just realized it could very well be a fitting title for Quantum Break

Dead or Alive certainly wouldn't bring a 3D fighter to mind just off its name. Sounds more like a shooter and/or zombie game.

To me Littlebigplanet sounded like the third installment of Little Big Adventure

I was dissapointed to find out it was a different game

Live-a-Live makes me think of an Animal Crossing-type of game for some reason.

Blades of Steel sounds like a hack-n-slash or a character action game, not a hockey game.

Off topic, but when the Vin Diesel movie, xXx, first came out I had a burned copy on a DVD and my mother found it and was yelling at me thinking it was a porno. I'm like, "Mom, if I was trying to hide a porno, why would I label it XXX?" Lol

DanganRonpa literally translated means "Bullet Refutation" which sounds more like some kind of action shooter rather than the mystery VN that it is.

Same with Marathon, and Destiny.

well, what would be a name fitting for a shooter then?
Also, that's probably why Halo was named "Halo - Combat Evolved".

I love the 'swap two game's names to give each a more fitting title' thing you kicked off a lot more than the thread's premise, btw ;)

I'm quite certain more than a few people looked at the cover of any of the Castle Shikigami series and thought they were anime JRPGs.

Animal Crossing. In Dutch, "dieren kruisen" ("to cross animals") means to breed different races of e.g. dogs. So yeah, I was kind of surprised how the games turned out.

Slap Fight is an odd name for a shoot 'em up.

when i see the name wipeout, it makes me think of that tv show where they made a bunch of assholes traverse impossible obstacle courses suspended above mud

There's this Japanese only Original Xbox game called "The Wild Rings". When I first read the title, I thought it was a JRPG funded by Microsoft to try and woo Japanese gamers, kinda like True Fantasy Live Online would've done.

Imagine my disappointment at discovering it was a wrestling game.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
God Wars = Brutal action adventure game

It took me a while to realize that they (probably) mean crossing as in crossing the street. Still kind of a random name though, especially since the original Japanese name is "animals' forest".
