I am in the market for one new 3DS Pokemon game. I'd like to try and get back in.

Which of the following is considered the best?

X
OmegaRuby
Sun/UltraSun

For context I played Gen 1, 2, and 3 when they first came out and haven't played anything after Emerald except for HeartGold.

Get X. For many that's actually what pulled them back to Pokemon whereas SM pushed them away due to the whole narrative shit.

Sun and Moon are the best Pokemon games, so get one of those

Though you could wait two months and get the definitive (?) version of Gen VII.

Cerulean Gym sure did change.

I feel like both drew different kinds of players. I think Black/White overall drew both kinds of players. Nearly everyone who played I talked to IRL/saw on GAF who played BW liked/loved it.

I liked it. I think I'm beginning to recognize it's probably the best opening entry (before sequels/third versions) other than Gold/Silver maybe.

B/W absolutely destroy X/Y and S/M. They're not even close for me. While the core gameplay mechanics may have gotten better in the 3DS games, and I like some of the new Pokemon, I vastly prefer pretty much everything else in B/W. Story, campaign, music, region... etc.

XY > ORAS >>> BW > SM

And I say that while thinking Emerald shits all over ORAS, too.

Kalos was a gorgeous region with fantastic new Pokemon designs, tons of QOL improvements and a story that didn't get in the way and just allowed me to do what I like most in Pokemon: explore the world and raise a team of new Pokemon that I like.

It seems totally at odds with BW & SM, which is probably why it gets so much hate from people who like Gen V and VII's take on Pokemon.

Kalos has pretty places, yeah, but it doesn't really do anything with them and they could be prettier. Pokemon designs are subjective and like I've said, I only think half of the Gen 6 designs hold up as well as people think they do while liking the majority of Gen V's designs (which is the biggest Gen ever) and almost all of the Gen VII. Also, most Pokemon campaigns take like a week and you can spend unlimited time raising Pokemon then, having to go through a small story once so that other people can enjoy the campaign more is a small price to pay, I gotta say deal to that, especially since it's not like XY didn't have a campaign, they just had a really shitty one.

I think describing SM's story as 'small' is a bit disingenuous lol. It's excruciatingly prominent throughout the entire adventure. That's fine for those who can stomach the story and its' characters, but I don't think 'deal with it' is the right response for everyone else when it has clearly been pretty divisive. A compromise is needed.

Personally, I think I'd be okay with story sequences if they were just spread further apart. The biggest issue is that Lillie (and others) follow you around throughout the region, and force breaks in gameplay with cutscenes every ~15-20 minutes. GameFreak can have a more involved story, sure, but...ditch the tag-alongs. Keep the story segments more separated from the general adventuring.

I've been playing Yellow in prep for the release of Gold/Silver VC, and some of the back sprites are really messing me up, especially Charmeleon. I would've liked to have had them changed like they did the the front sprites. Other than that, the game is very charming, despite its age.

I am not one to do list but I were, X and Y would be at the bottom of the list for being so disappointing and regressive compare to Gen 4 and 5 plus it didn't even get a third version it's forever disappointing.

Plus it didn't help that Kalos was clearly a test region than a proper living and breathing region like the one in gen 1-5 and gen 7.

Anyway on the topic of Ultra Sun and Moon I have almost created my team for Ultra Sun and Moon but in Ultra Moon I have free spot reserved for a water type and in Ultra Sun I have a free spot reserved for anyone that can fit that spot.

I am leaving them empty till I get more info on move tutors, the updated Pokédex and whether we get more Alola form.

Cerulean Gym sure did change.

Makes sense since Misty is now running the gym and not her goofy sisters.

Charmeleon back sprite makes him look like a hippo.

Favorite mons rankings time

Gen 6 > Gen 1 > Gen 7 > Gen 5 > Gen 4 > Gen 3 > Gen 2

Mine is pretty much based on number of mons that I actually want to use during the game. Gen 2 and 3 I struggle to find mons from that gen that I want to use on my team during the playthrough.

The gap between each generation is small.
Some of my favorite pokemon to use come from Gen 2, so they carry it.

I was actually kinda surprised by the last two.

By the same metric:

Gen 6 > Gen 1 > Gen 3 > Gen 2 > Gen 4 > Gen 5 > Gen 7

Yeah, I kinda guess this one, though.

Gen V > Gen IV > Gen VII > Gen III > Gen II > Gen I > Gen 6

If I were to go into games...

BW > Pt > B2W2 > HGSS > SM > E > DP > RS > FRLG > ORAS > C > GS > RB > XY

Never played Yellow

In terms of what I'd rather replay in 2017:

HGSS > Platinum > Emerald > XY > B2W2 > Crystal > FRLG > GS > Yellow > RB > ORAS > RS > DP > BW > SM

It's very hard to properly rank the series though, imo. Like, how can you really compare RB to XY? I think Red & Blue were vastly better games at the time of release than XY was, but obviously I'd much rather play XY these days because of the improvements nearly 20 years brought to the table.

Games for me:

GS > Pt > B2W2 > RB > SM > BW > XY > RS > Y >>>DP

Never played Crystal nor Emerald. Also ranked by lasting impression of my experience rather than how it plays today, although I do think RB are still very fun retro games and am looking forward to replaying GS. Also couldnt figure out what to do with remakes so i left em out lol

I always feel weird ranking them. I like B/W and S/M the most. Like, in terms of Stuff I Like In Pokemon, they have the most of it. I like X/Y and G/S the least. Everything else is kind of in the middle I guess.

PSS = The actual Pokémon games for me.

Last page or couple of page I was asked why a Pokémon stats mean anything when I'm playing the main story. Well the PSS is why a Pokémon stats, IV, and is EV trained matters for my play throughs.

Having the PSS on while going through my journey and with a profile and message that says excepting 6v6 battles I would get battle request from real players while on my journey and I would use my ingame bread and trained team against them. I would treat battles against other players as part of my main journey through the region. It was always funny when I accepted a battle request and the other guy saw my Froakie, Haunter, and the rest of my fully trained but not yet fully evolved team and he/she would bring like two of their Pokémon just to end up losing to me. I know that other person had to be like "wtf just happened!?"

Then why not just use Showdown? If you don't compete and don't care about the story?

No PC and I didn't say I don't care about the story.

Brief me history

Was there for Gen 1 and Gen 2 which I loved. Left, tried to come back in gen 5 but ended up giving my DS with games away to a kid who's family wasn't doing too hot at that time before I even took the rapper off the game. Came back with XY and I discover the PSS and I ended up putting a ungodly amount of time into XY. I loved that journey and I loved the fact that I could take on other players while on that journey. XY is why I've gotten back into Pokémon to the point that it has rubbed off on my kids and they now talk about and want to play Pokémon.

Edit: I also enjoy the breeding and training involved with creating my team.

My bad, I thought you were coming from a similar "SuMo's bad because it had cutscenes and I just wanna battle with people" route, but honestly, you can play Showdown with just a laptop, I don't think it takes much to run, honestly.

With SuMo I only have two real complaints.

For me the base stats for SOME not all Pokémon feels off. Like too low off. Decidueye should not have a base speed that low. 😡

Second one being PSS was replace with Festival Plaza. That broke my heart. Game Freak took something that wasn't broken out instead of adding to it to make it better and replaced it with a toilet.

Sun and Moon are great games. I played through them around 5 times but didn't put no where near the same amount of time like I did for XY or ORAS because of the lack of PSS. I enjoyed the characters and like Lili more then some because she's someone who eventually found her way on her own.
I have two young daughters and something about Lili's story resonated with me.
I was critical about Sun and Moon in the past but when it comes down to it if I didn't really like it I wouldn't have played through the story 5 times while reading and doing everything possible each time.

This will sound stupid, but one of my biggest gripes with SunMoon is the lack of a bicycle.
I have to dismount and remount that stupid ugly Tauros (one of my least favourite Pokémon, for the record) constantly because the damn thing is too big to fit through paths, around trainers and rocks, or up staircases into buildings. (Oh yeah, and it takes an extra button press or two to access compared to the bike) I can't even believe how much frustration such a simple thing caused me over the course of the game.

I love the idea of Pokémon replacing HMs and mundane things like bikes, but maybe offer a smaller ride 'mon in the next game?

I think that's fair, I actually do hope that they mix up the Ride Pokemon every generation if they do end up keeping that feature (THEY BETTER)

I feel like SM is in its own little world considering how Brock reverted back to his original self as well as Misty.

I mean that's not what I said, either. Your suggestion of me just rushing through the story so I can then train whatever I want in the postgame wasn't a solution at all, because I still like plaything through the 'story' of a Pokemon game. I like slowly gathering a team as I travel across the region for the first time, battling against in-game trainers and the Gyms/Trials etc. I just think SM's story ruined the game for me because of how prominent it was. I might not have minded if it was a good story, but it didn't work for me on any level.

Raising Pokemon in the postgame is an entirely different experience.

I mean, dudes flock to Cerulean for Misty's sisters, so they might have a steady income revenue. Maybe if Brock took off his shirt like in the games then he could compete lmao
The sisters have been going on trips for 15 years. Its all Misty bringing in that fan service dough.

Someone I follow retweets tons of anime pics and there's literally one where Brock treats Lillie's Vulpix.

Also, speaking of Lillie, she's actually going to be a trainer in US/UM?

DP are the worst games by default because they run like complete ass. If it wasn't for Platinum then Sinnoh would have been the worst region mainly because of a poor running engine.

Without too much effort I added the alola mons to my living dex and thus completing the dex again. Keeping alola forms separate since they keep identical dex entries with the original.

Now for shinies and ribbons for my OG team.

XY was godly at launch for PSS and QoL features. I realized on replay how bad the single player was though which is really important to me. And the story was just never even close to decent I thought there would he a Z version just because if how placeholder XY story was

So, the Celebi and Theme codes. Do you only get them if you got both games, were they supposed to be in the receipt (email if you migrated to a Nintendo Account) if you pre-loaded, or are they going to send another email/update the receipt when the game actually comes out?

I bought Silver and I don't have anything.

Did you check your account activity on the 3DS? It looks like some people have gotten their codes.

If not, you probably have to contact Nintendo about it.

Receipt isn't there on the 3DS, as I said they go to email after going through the process to link the NNID with the Switch. I'll wait until the game actually comes out before contacting them, maybe something will change by then.

I have such good luck with Pokemon related email things.

I got a mail immediately after purchasing the preload containing both codes. EU eShop.

Hey guys, I've got a question for you:

I just realised my Pokemon Bank expired. I don't know exactly when but it did. I lost my living dex that was almost complete (despite a few legendaries).
Any way to get it back? Do I get them back if I re-purchase another licence?

Man this sucks, I though I got my licence back in november but it seems it was earlier than that -_-
