GameInformer: Yes, Destiny 2 Is Worth Checking Out If You Hated The First Game

Pretty good read as I didn't like the first one a lot either. PC Release can't come soon enough!

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/featu...checking-out-if-you-hated-the-first-game.aspx

Two quotes from the article:

It would be an understatement to say that I did not like Destiny upon its release in 2014. Years later I still maintain that it's a bad game. Not even a mediocre one. Straight up bad, with its environments composed of endless, barren plains with enemies surging toward you horde-style, its constant grind with diminishing returns, and let's not forget the awful, non-existent attempt at storytelling culminating with a character saying "I don't have time to explain what I don't have time to explain." Admittedly, expansion packs like The Taken King and Rise Of Iron helped fixed a lot of those problems by inserting mini-campaigns into the game and filling out what was essentially a clunky proof of concept with the kind of content that should have been there in the first place, but it still felt like a bandaid on a broken bone, as none of Destiny's locations or activities were as interesting or satisfying as its gunplay.

As someone who bounced off hard of the original game, in spite of being someone who's usually gaga for bold and rough experiments, I'm falling hard for Destiny 2. Whether it's just roaming around the various planets, listening to the incredible score, or helping my fellow Guardians take on Public Events or going off on my own adventures, Destiny 2 is a constantly immersive experience. The jump in quality between these two games might not match the difference between Titanfall and its sequel or Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2, but it's a stellar experience and one that comes closer to realizing the weird FPS/MMO dream hybrid the original game was trying so hard to be. Despite my ardent skepticism, Destiny 2 is shaping up to be one of my favorite games of the year and one that I urge folks to check out even if the original game rubbed you the wrong way. Come join me, fellow croweaters, in popping off satisfying headshots and dancing on farmhouses beneath a full moon. For more on Destiny 2, check out our official review.

I think if you "hated" the first one - this would be a really bad purchase.

If you liked the first one, but found it disappointing and didn't hold your interest - this one has a better chance of doing so.

Absolutely agree.

Destiny 1 is my single biggest disappointment this generation, I loathed the non existent story, hollow campaign, the tedious and broken progression system, and basically everything about the game.

Destiny 2 is by no means perfect, but it fixes all of that and it's FUN.

The original game didn't "rub me the wrong" way - I just had no desire to keep playing it after I finished whatever it had that passed for a campaign. And absolutely nothing I've seen or heard from Destiny 2 has convinced me that would change.

Yeah, I think people should take caution that the actual gameplay of Destiny 2, outside of a couple QOL adjustments, is almost exactly the same as D1.

I completely agree. I despised the first Vanilla one. I almost didn't bother downloading the Beta for D2 then I downloaded it and it made a good impression so I decided to buy it.
The game has a lot of content for solo players like me and most importantly it's pretty good content. Don't like the same enemy types though but I understand the decision.

I wouldn't say so tbh. I didn't like Destiny 1 and while I did like Destiny 2 alot more the end game leaves alot to be desired and I'm starting to feel pretty much the same way about this game that I did the first game.

You have to grind alot and the rewards for grinding suck. Bought the PS4 version because hype, was going to get it on PC but I'm not sure.

If you hated Destiny 1, I highly doubt you will enjoy Destiny 2. It's fun but it largely has the same flaws of the first title, it fixed a lot but it's not a monumental difference.

I mean it depends on what you're into to some extent of course, but I'm playing Destiny 2 with friends who hated Destiny 1 or bounced off it super quick and they're loving Destiny 2. Still has issues, but it's a significantly better release than D1 was.

Out of curiosity, how much of Destiny 1 did you play? You know enough about what it did wrong to make me think that you played a decent amount.

I think the article should read "If you hated Destiny 1 but not enough to stop playing before the end-game content, you should play Destiny 2."

However, if you hated Destiny 1 to the point where you played it less than 5 hours, you probably won't like Destiny 2.

Yeah, I think people should take caution that the actual gameplay of Destiny 2, outside of a couple QOL adjustments, is almost exactly the same as D1.

Basically this, I "hated" Destiny 1 but still got far enough to play through the raids because my friends were playing it.

Disagree to an extent. If you hated vanilla Destiny then yes maybe try D2. If you still hated Destiny after TTK and such then you will still hate Destiny 2. It's. Or a different game, it's a refined one.

Yeah. More of a, "If you thought you'd like Destiny, but got frustrated with the really rough bits, Destiny 2 will treat you better."

Both Destiny and its sequel are the same foods. Destiny just had some rocks mixed in.

Strange, I play it from time to time and have 285 Light without getting rewards from Raid (got flawless in Trials tho). There's no grinding in this game, I already have almost full collection of weapons in my Vault lol. Compared to D1 "grinding" here is a joke with clan rewards and easy weekly activities.

there's less tedium with farming, but there's also less to do. After you finish the story, you can do strikes, public events, or the raid. that's about it. same as D1.

They should specify that it's specifically worth it to those who played tha game during launch or year 1 as a whole, the worst state possible of the game. It's a way different conversation from TTK and on.

D2 is ok but it's way worse than D1 in a lot of aspects that got shafted due it's extreme focus on casual audience.

I still don't see how Destiny 2 improves the Destiny 1 formula so much so to make someone a fan this time around. They are insanely similar experiences. I feel like the game informer editor was just in a better mood to play it.

I hated the first one. Got to like Level 8 and quit. So boring.

I got Destiny 2 free with an XB1 bundle I bought this weekend. Got to level 8 in one sitting and I can't wait to go home and keep playing.

If you hated Vanilla Destiny 1, like I did, and swore off the franchise, I'd say you should still consider Destiny 2. It's really good.

I'm sure it is, GI, but as someone who loathed the first game it's not worth full price. Once it's on sale, yeah maybe.

The title is complete nonsense. If you hated Destiny 1, you'll hate Destiny 2. They basically remade the first game except didn't mess it up entirely.

This would be fine for me if we're talking the moment-to-moment gameplay; the shooting and the wandering around were both fine. It's the sheer lack of anything interesting to do as a solo player that killed my interest, and from the article it sounds like Destiny 2 only partially addresses this. Saying the campaign is about on par with one of the weaker Halo campaigns is really not a good way to sell someone on the game if they're not interested in finding a bunch of other hardcore Destiny players who can do high-level raids. Anybody who was already doing that is probably already playing Destiny 2.

This article is rubbish. There is no way if you hated the first one that this would change your mind. Its just more of the same, if anything its a step backwards if you look at D1 as a whole with all the DLC. D2 has very little in the way of end game content.

Btw, I love both games.

Its a culmination of a lot of lessons learned and good parts of D1. Most people got turned off with vanilla destiny.

Well the article is talking about mainly vanilla destiny for those wondering or didnt read it:

LOL. So basically, "it's the same game but 100x better, but you won't like it if you didn't like the first one."..even though I just said I didn't and I do. People in this thread need to stop speaking on behalf of other people.

But I even got turned off to vanilla Destiny despite dumping 500 hours into it. However I love playing with friends and that's what kept me going. Destiny 2 is by and large the same game. There's very little difference between the two besides not having to use an app anymore to locate public events.

If you played a game for 500 hours, you were not "turned off by it". I played Destiny for about 4 hours and never played it again...that's what "turned off" means.

Do you really think he intended to speak for, literally, the entire world? Come on.

I agree with this... If you just want a coherent fun romp campaign. You have that. If you just want casual Halo-esque PvP you have that too.

But if you want end game PvE Raids or end game PvP Trials like the things that kept people playing Destiny 1, then that is still in there too.

This, but it's only half of what's important. Destiny 2 improved many of the worst parts of Destiny, but it didn't really iterate or improve any of the original game's best parts. It's just more of. The best way I can think of describing the differences between the two is that Destiny 2 is eminently more consumable.

Do you really think he intended to speak for, literally, the entire world? Come on.

I'm was saying to not speak for people other than yourself. I never said "everyone in the world". I'm saying, I disliked Destiny 1, I like Destiny 2. I'm not saying "if you didn't like Destiny 1, you will like Destiny 2"...do you see the difference?

Slightly off-topic, but I've long had a sneaking suspicion that the backlash against No Man's Sky would not have been as deafening as it was had Destiny 1 lived up to expectations. Different genres, I know, but there was a widespread feeling at the time that we were being screwed by every sci-fi game promising the moon (literally) and offering no content in return.

I think the more on point thing to say is if you still didn't like it with The Taken King this game might never be for you but I still think people would say that's incorrect. If you were there during launch or while they were implementing the foundation it's worth rechecking out.

It's different for everyone but I play a lot of games. I can very well dislike something even if I play it everyday. In regards to this topic, I strongly disagree with the game informer writer. Destiny 2 is the first game all over again. Arguably less so as I've already accomplished everything in Destiny 2 that it took me months to do in destiny 1.

Does that need to be said though? If you hate the very core of the game then no sequel is going to change that unless they completely change the game.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
I haven't purchased the game but I've been playing on and off with a friend of mine who was super into Destiny 1. If you hated Destiny 1, then Destiny 2 is not going to do nearly enough to get you to love it or in my case even like it. The enemies still seem dumb as pricks, the moment to moment gameplay doesn't do all that much for me and I was never a huge loot obsessed person so that entire aspect falls flat for me again. Give it a shot but I'd say rent it first before jumping head in as I won't make any claims about it being an expansion but I don't think it does nearly enough to draw in people who hated the first game, not at all.

Worth checking out? Sure. I tried the PC beta. I wanted to like it. Worth buying? Not for me. Not that I'd call either Destiny game bad. They're just clearly not made for me. Playing the beta made me appreciate other games I enjoy more.
