DOOM (Holiday 2017) and Wolfenstein II (2018) Announced for Nintendo Switch

Can we finally agree that Nintendo is Doomed?

A caveat mentioned in the video is that he only got to play it in undocked mode. I doubt there's enough grunt opened up with docked to bring it to 60, but maybe it'll at least lock it at 30 and add some detail?

It'll still look pretty nice on the handheld screen I think. Also, DF said they haven't seen it docked, could smooth it out a little more.

It's worth noting that while the game is at 30 FPS, Richard was still really impressed by the Switch port. Mostly because while trying to run it on comparable hardware, in some places more powerful even while severely gimped, he couldn't get it to match the Switch's apparent performance. He explicitly stresses that, for what it's running on, it looks to be a good port - particularly since they only got to run it in handheld mode.

But on YouTube they state:

Any hype for me is dead now. I'd have been hopeful if it was another random gaming magazine that said it, but Digital Foundry are rarely mistaken.

THis is exactly why NateDrake said:

I'm not opening my heart again. I've already been hurt too much.

Richard has played the Switch version. I am sure someone with his knowledge and eye for detail can easily see the difference.

Yeah, I don't know. I'm still on the 'not entirely sure' train, even if I may have to settle for 30 FPS.

Maybe it's still being optimized, maybe they'll go for unlocked, maybe (most likely now) it'll be 30 FPS. I'll wait a bit longer until there's more official footage and impressions, but I have to say, the jump from 30fps to 60fps at the end of the video hurt a bit.

Ok fair enough.

In my opinion they can cancel the Wolf 2 port right now if it's going to be 30FPS too.

Well, I'll settle for 30 in Wolfenstein personally, but for Doom - 60 is more important imo, since the game has much more of an arcade feeling.

Don't get me wrong, I want 60 in all of my games if possible, but for a story heavy game, I'm willing to accept 30 every once in a while (on consoles, that is)

How the fuck could that journalist have thought it was 60fps lol.
I'll just assume the gaming press is blind and if there's an embargo lifted tomorrow we'll be reading glowing impressions of a smooth but unspecified framerate.
Well I was close. Kinda wish DF posted later cause now I bet other journalists are just gonna reference them instead of being vague or wrong themselves.

Wait what? No!

Edit: Wait, they are pixel counting from the footage from the direct? They are talking about the footage being compressed. Could it be they haven't actually played it and are going only by the direct footage?

still hoping
They played 40 minutes of the Switch version, but they don't have direct footage.

DF video got taken down.

So that means.

If they post it again.

They've posted it twice.

And as we know.

Math dictates.

2x 30fps = 60fps.

Video got taken down? Why? When does the embargo lift?

I did get to see it, though. And yes, he was very sure about 30fps.

See, guys?

Just another proof that multiplayer.it it's shit and it should be banned from this forum.

Every article from this site is not reliable, imo.

Yeah I don't think the embargo is actually up. Of course I had to pick that moment to play some Mario x Rabids instead of browse Neogaf though. Goddamnit.

This is exactly why NateDrake said:

a) He specifically said he wasn't confirming a 30hz target, just telling people to keep their expectations in check

b) Even if he was making that claim, why would you assume this was correct?

I interpreted it as such, because he couldn't specify either way given the embargo. So in my mind he was never going to specifically say what his comment was referring to.

He also made a very specific comment e.g setting high expectations over the framerate. Perhaps I did read too much into it.

Either way Digital Foundry's recent video confirming 30fps has definitely deflated any hype I had, although I'll still be keeping an eye on actual footage and reviews etc.

ahh, the framerate might be a deal braker. but then again i only play fps on PC so there's a slim chance that I would be getting this at all.

Heh, so what if it's 30fps undocked.
Do we know if it's also 30fps docked? This is probably even more important.

It still wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.
It's Doom on the go. This is the deal I'm going for.

Kinda saw it coming.

I'm just glad I got to make the thread. Should be fully updated to the best of my memory now.

We'll see what the other outlets say when the embargo lifts.

we don't really know anything still, 30fps is a very informed guess, not a number revealed from the horses mouth. all impressions are handheld mode. beyond that, we know nothing.

So, what are the chances it's 720p/60fps in docked mode, and 5xx/30 in handheld?

Have there been framerate-halved games on Switch between modes?

Also, if it were, why would they demo a 30fps version when they had it running at 60 docked? If that were the case, they'd make that a bullet point.

Heh, I guessed right. I'm not dissapointed because I kept expectations realistic. I'm happy with what we have seen and know. Arena style multiplayer on the go (with bots!) is what I'm most interested in, as there is nothing like it out there. The redone multiplayer is awesome.

Jesus christ you guys are overly dramatic. It's still a handheld through and through, it's no miracle machine lol.

It was just a joke, at least on my side. Didn't consider setting /s tag would be that important.
It's a 2016 DOOM on a portable device, I'm still in day1. Also not gonna jump on the Wolfenstein II train until Switch release.

As long as it's a decent port the general public won't care if it's 30FPS, GAF on the other hand....still buying it day 1.

I don't know. Maybe the opportunity wasn't there. I also didn't see the DF video, so i don't know the context. But i can imagine if they couldn't lock 60 in handheld mode (say the framerate was 40-50 unlocked) and chose to lock it at 30 instead, that it might be possible to squeeze out 60 in docked mode. Probably grasping at straws here, but stranger things have happened i guess.

Don't even care. The reactions are pretty entertaining though!

No matter how scaleable the engine, it was doubtful to run without looking like mud at 60fps.

Day 1 for me, hopefully somewhere will be selling below £60 though...

Oh my bad, just a lot of reactions between this and the DF thread lol.

The game was only playable in handheld mode. That's why there will be no direct feed video captures once the embargo lifts in a couple of hours.

30fps is a bit disappointing, but not entirely surprising. If it's a solid 30 I'll still pick it up (and it should be, given the variable resolution). Given that a variable resolution solution is already in there, ideally they'd give players the option to play at 60fps and take the extra resolution hit, but I guess they just don't want to put out a game running at such low res, even as an option. Alternatively it could get CPU limited by that point.

The decision to use an outside studio to handle the port is interesting. Most likely motivated by the fact that id's engine team have been so busy on Wolfenstein for the last few months. I wonder if id will properly integrate Switch support into the engine for Wolfenstein, though, as if Bethesda plan on using the engine for more projects in the future, and they also plan on continuing support for Switch (both of which seem likely), then it makes more sense to have it as a main build platform than relying on ad-hoc ports.

Edit: Meant to post this in the other thread, but I suppose it works here too.

I missed a bit of a roller coaster it seems. Anyone know when the embargo is actually up? I definitely trust DF on this but it'll be kinda funny to see what other outlets say.

Hopefully we'll see some off screen footage of handheld mode too.

People are like freaking out that the game runs at 30fps. It's crazy. If that's a deal breaker for you I can def understand. But people are saying no port shoild exist if they can't get it to 60fps. That's insanity.

Are you saying that Gaf is overreacting about a video game's technical performance??

Anyway, I'm one of those crazy people who need to see two videos side by side to determine if they're 60 or 30 so this won't bother me at all. I'm sure a lot of the "no buy" people will also change their mind once it actually comes around to launch time.

In about 90min.

Thanks, sir!
