I'm on Route B of Nier: Automata and I've completely lost interest

So I was enjoying this game to begin with. Its weird tone and dramatic soundtrack made an instant impression on me, and the dynamic switching of perspectives and mechanics during combat made for some really engaging set-pieces. And because I was having a good time, I felt compelled to complete as much side content as my level would permit before it was time to move on to the point of no return.

BIG MISTAKE!

I'm on Route B now and I already feel burned out. I've sunk too many hours into optional stuff because I wanted to explore the smaller vignettes of lore and world building, but the problem is that said optional stuff comes straight out of the Dragon Age: Inquisition textbook of stock fetch-quest design. "Please go to this part of the map and collect this item/fight these enemies and come back to me." I can only tolerate so much of that, but by the end of Route A I had only cleared approximately 48% of the quests! So moving on, I hesitatingly resorted to skipping everything outside the main plotline, because doing anything more would be masochism at this rate. But the other major problem, and this is pretty well documented at this point, is that Route B features a lot of recycled content. There are some entirely new segments, but more than half of it involves playing through the same game again. Yeah sure, you can approach fights in a different way via
hacking
, but that new mini-game mechanic has lost its lustre very quickly.

Needless to say, my opinion of this game has taken a steep decline. The overarching problem for me is that Nier: Automata can't sustain its own length. The combat was gratifying to begin with, but is ultimately too simplistic to hold the attention for such a long duration, and the narrative is scattershot and borderline episodic to the extent that even the main story has lost its appeal now. And there's still Route C to go! I can't help but feel this is yet another example of a game that's too bloated and could've benefited from some serious editing. It's somewhat dispiriting to have my impressions of a game go downhill like this, considering how things started out, and I just had to vent.

You can complete Route B pretty quickly if you only do the story quests, the sidequests can be done later/post-game if you want.

Side quests are less about gameplay content and more about fleshing out the main story (one of the best moments in the game is a side quest). If you don't care about the world then skip the side quests. Also, if you can stick with it you're rewarded if you make it past B.

Don't worry about missing any side content, because you will have ample opportunity to complete any and all missed content later on. If you just wanna do the story, then just do the story for now.

If you're sick of the recycled content and sidequests, just rush through Route B. Just do it. Route C is new.

B has bogged me down as well. I've been trying to force myself to just focus on the main quest, but it feels a lot like busywork to get to new content.

I mean, if you feel burned out with side quests, don't do them. It's okay. Route B can be completed in just a few hours, it's not that long.

Route C is where it really takes off. Speed through the end of B and I feel pretty confident your feelings will reverse.

I got burned out on B too, but everything after it launched it to GOTY status for me.

The hacking sucks ass. I'd recommend just sticking to the main story from this point on. It's not that long if you do that and the vast majority of sidequests are a waste of time. There's a few good ones but it's not worth sifting through the rest of them.

That's kinda how I felt. Route b was just not a lot of fun for me. The combat gets worse and the twin stick shooter parts get old quickly. Having to redo a lot of the same areas only with worse combat was not great. Route c is a lot better and has some amazing moments but route b does drag my opinion of the game down a bit.

Sounds more like you burnt yourself out than the game not sustaining its length. Each of the 3 Routes takes maybe 6-8 hours. the game more than enough sustains that.

Also: Start using spears as 9S. Imo 9S got fun when i stopped trying to cheese things via hacking and decided to use long range spear attacks lol

Route B and beyond are bad. I felt the same way.

I know route b is divisive (I personally loved it more than Route A, but whatever), but Route C is the best part of the game...

Route B dragged. I mostly stuck with it because I found the characters interesting enough to stick with it while all the twists mostly missed for me.

I honestly don't understand the appeal of this game at all. Replaying it 26 times to get different endings sounds like torture with a game that mediocre. I'm convinced the only real reason people play it is because they like anime girls, because that seems like the only appeal that game has.

I hope this is poorly disguised trolling because none of this is true.

I want to say Route B is pretty quick if you rush through it. Even though most of the gameplay is the same, I do think it has some interesting story aspects.

I also think Route C makes the Route B playthrough worth it.

Going through Route B is definitely the game's biggest weakness. I believe they could have combined A and B together and added a character switching mechanic and it would have saved the pacing of the game.

You have a very wrong idea how the game is played. The subsequent playthroughs have entirely new content, some are 100% new. The new games are pretty much chapters, but artistically set up as new game+.

Route B wore out its welcome within the first hour for me. Although it was a novel idea that allowed for some interesting (albeit i thought predictable) story bits, the game was absolutely ruined by my increasing dislike for that playable character as well as the mechanic that wore itself out within one hour. I already wasn't too crazy on the combat when playing as 2B (it was good but not great imo), and everything got worse with the next playthrough for me. I thought it was a total slog.

NieRAutomata does some really awesome stuff in my opinion, but the second playthrough ruined a lot of my enjoyment from the game.

Route C was redeeming, although I was really bummed to find out I had to play as 9S again for even just a bit.

Wow. What a dumb post.

If you skip sidequests you can egt through B in less than 6 hours.

You literally have no idea what you're talking about.

I agree with others, push through Route B quickly, it's worth it. B was my least favorite part of the game, although it was ok seeing the story from a different perspective.

You don't need to beat the game in one weekend. I agree that the game's structure is sorely repetitive and less than ideal, but it's worth doing the side quests. They still linger in my mind months after completing the game. Space out your sessions.

NeoGAF needs a way to tag users, because, honestly, this is the worst post I've ever seen.

I was ready to refute your first point, but after reading your second I realize you've made up your mind and won't be convinced otherwise.

Route B is quick, power through, plus you know there's a part
9S isn't in
that speeds up the story quickly, then you get to a section that is not part of the Route A, then you can do Route C which is completely different!

...you don't replay it 26 times, what gave you that idea?

Only routes A and B start from a similar place. Route C takes place afterward. You're not "replaying the game," you're playing new chapters. And the majority of those 26 endings are not the result of routes but are instead "bad endings" for choices you make, which do nothing but dump you back into the game after you see them.

Take your time through the rest of the side missions and just rush the fuck through the main story missions with hacking until you get to the new content in Route B (it's really late in)

Sigh

you only play through the game 3 times

You can burn through route B in a fraction of the time, hell they cut out chunks due to what happenes to certain characters. Just pay attention to the “recycled content” as the changes that are made to it are there to further surface the games larger themes and twists.

If you’re not into it by the end of B when they pull the
MGSV-like mid game trailer,
then don’t bother, and move on. To drop it before then is like quitting a race with the finish line in sight.

I hit the same wall. Came back a week or 2 later and pushed through to the good stuff.

Just push through, it gets better. So much better.

I'm not really blaming the side missions, which I did a lot of during the first route, but I also stalled out about halfway through route B. Just lost interest and haven't gone back, it's been a couple months now.

Compared to Gestalt, Route B in Automata fell short for me. Still worth playing through IMO though.

wrong time to lose interest. I don't blame you for it and route B was for the most part the lowest part of the game but it does a lot of building up for route C. Definitely worth it.

I've got a friend who felt similarly. It's a shame, but that's part of the gamble in player interest that the game takes. I thought route B's payoff made it worthwhile (the segment at the end of the route, where the story differs from route A, is sooooo good), but it is a bit of a low point in the game. Try doing it in small bits, and skip the sidequests entirely for now. Later in the game, you have the opportunity to go back and do them if you're interested.

Yeah, Route B is bad and, with Route A not being great, the reason I don't consider this game exceptional.

The problem is that Route C, even with some rough spots, is basically the best part of the game. Which is a bad and a good thing.

Lol. If you're gonna criticize something then at least get your facts straight.

Tbh I was so hype for this game but the second I got to the open world in the beginning I just...

I have a problem playing RPGs these days. It's been months and I played like 30 minutes.

Honestly disagree with you. Route B was enjoyable and to me Route C wouldn't be as good as it was if weren't for Route B. I also had zero problem with quests because I already done most of them in Route A, so the most Quests I done in Route B were mostly new. Another thing I did Route B is I equipped Drop Rate + 5 chip on my 9S so most of the time I already have the material for that quest.
