Apple Pre-order Thread - iPhone 8, 8+, Watch Series 3, AppleTV 4K

There's no substitute for having that gigantic battery.

Very true.

I suppose I'll ask around regarding the battery life differences in a few months when people have had time to use these things. But honestly, I'm happy if it lasts from 6am in the morning to 11pm in the evening with heavy Spotify use and maybe 3 or 4 hours of SOT (i.e. internet/instagram browsing) or until the next morning with slightly lighter use. I very rarely go for longer than 24 hours without being able to charge it at all.

I do wonder about what will become of my battery life, going from 6+ to an 8. I wonder how 3 years with a giant phone with its giant battery spoiling me will manifest.

I have the 256 7+. Happy I did it but I always have at least 130 gbs free no matter how hard I try downloading movies, music and games. It's a lot of storage. Nice to never worry, but probably could have gotten away with a lower sku myself.

128gb is the sweet spot for me, too bad they got rid of that with the new phones.

Noooo, regulations are printed on the back (German model)
But it looks HOT. Much like Jet Black depending on the angle and light
Really grippy too. And it’s not as large as I feared it would be tbh, still comfortable

I just got one too. (Plus) No regulations on back for me.

DxO Labs released their iPhone 8/8+ camera review, and the results are pretty incredible. "The best smartphone camera we've ever tested."

https://www.dxomark.com/apple-iphone-8-plus-reviewed-the-best-smartphone-camera-ever-tested/

Scored a 94 on the 8+, 92 on 8.

Thanks for posting this, I love seeing these in depth tests. 8 is a definite improvement. I'm glad to see Apple is saturating their photos ever so slightly more.

That noise comparison in portrait mode is a huge upgrade. I don't use it much but trying it in anything other than really bright daylight gave me less than desirable results.

I can't wait to see their test on the X, they said the cameras are said to be slightly better so that sounds promising already.

"So to ensure that the images we used in the review display properly on a wide variety of browsers and devices, we converted the originals from DCI-P3 to sRGB. This can slightly reduce the richness of color in some cases from what you would see when viewing the original images on a DCI-P3-calibrated display with appropriate software."

So, not even testing its full color gamut capabilities. Dumb.

Alright! I got my iPhone 8 today. Still gotta order a new Rhinoshield playproof case and screen protection. Thankfully the rhinoshield crashguard bumper for my old iPhone 6 fits so I still have some protection. I’ll just have to be extra careful for a few weeks.

I think only the tele is improved (to f/2.4 from f/2.8 on the 8+) and with OIS. It still annoys me that they didn't put it on the 8+ but oh well.

Portrait Lightning is finnicky af right now. It basically only works with faces in the view finder and often enough the results of the stage lightning sets are awful (like a really horrible Photoshop cut-out). Here's to hope they iterate quickly.
The portrait effect photos I took so far look really, really good though.

So I see the Daily Mail running a picture with only a hand full of people outside the London Apple store.

Suspect most people are waiting on the X.

I think you are misunderstanding. They tested them at full quality, but then they converted them for the actual posted website review so that web browsers of their readers would display them properly. That’s my understanding. He isn’t saying they did these conversions before testing the images, but rather for hosting purposes once posting the review for the public. They are just noting that they couldn’t really post the full quality pics on their review for your viewing.

Pretty surprised to walk into the Apple Store in Shibuya after work, and pick up an Apple Watch series 3 LTE model without any problems what-so-ever. Didn't seem like anyone was having any trouble getting iPhones too.

I'm not as surprised with the Watch, simply because reviews have said that the LTE is spotty in its connection. The Verge was particularly harsh about it, but I feel they've been particularly rough on all the new products from Apple in general, recently.

Did they? If they did ignore my comment but they don’t really make note that their tests were done at P3 since I assume they also converted the HEIF files to jpeg.

maybe we could get lucky and see cheap(er) iPhone 8 soon?
would be nice

I'm having a hard time justifying the Apple Watch 3 over the Watch 1.

I want to get one mainly for the gamified fitness tracking features, but when I break down the comparisons between the 1 and the 3, it doesn't really seem like the 3 offers much I care about other than speed. LTE doesn't seem particularly useful at all, I'm not a distance runner so I don't need GPS, and I'm not a swimmer. The LTE thing is really confusing; it's like they're not even trying to describe any use cases. It'll have Apple Music streaming in October; that's cool I guess, but what else does it do besides let you take calls?

I wonder if I'd be better served seeing if Best Buy has any old stock Series 2s and using my gift card stash on that version.

In particular, I suspect that the kind of person who would line up to get a new iPhone on launch day is also the kind of person who would want the iPhone X.

Definitely not an STD, as I'm a pure.
Ordered my Series 3 Apple Watch in Space Grey. Went with the non LTE model, which seems the way to go. Will be here Tuesday.

I got the 42mm even though I tried on my friend's 42mm yesterday and the thing was huge on my wrist, the 38mm is just way too small.

I mean, any function that previously required being tethered to the phone now doesn't require being tethered to the phone. For a lot of people, specifically active people, being able to leave the phone at home is huge.

Probably too early but anyone get their ATV4K in? I’m really curious to hear impressions with the whole upscaling thing

Picking mine up today. Of course my 4K TV doesn’t come in until next week 🤷

I put in an order for a space grey iPhone 8 Plus though. That’ll hold me over until the X

I think the LTE makes the most sense for exercise/athletics.

For me I pretty much always have my phone with me so I have no real reason to upgrade from my Series 1.

I'm trying real hard to not make a lunchtime trip to the Apple store to try and pick one up. I don't really "need" one right now as I have the previous model and it's working fine. Dat 4k pull tho'...

Right, makes sense. I'm only semi-active. I'm happy to use an armband or something and tether the phone. I don't take a lot of calls but I'm an avid texter; don't know what that experience would be like on a Watch.

From a user on reddit, but this speed difference looks significant

several times, yes
but it's just geekbench

except that geekbench is a pretty good 1:1 comparison of CPU power and processing efficiency.

obviously compared to a laptop which has nowhere near the thermal or power considerations as a phone, the phone may burst higher but would fall behind in a sustained test. but it does show that in many shorter term operations, the iPhone could beat a MBP in those tasks..

The damning part though was the 2:00 4K file. Same operations between 8, Note8 and S8.. 8 completed it in :42, Note8 in ~3mins, and S8 in ~4mins. I mean damn.

Should The Verge just fanboy and not pick up legitimate issues?

Both the Watch 3 and ATV4K reviews highlighted legitimate issues that Apple confirmed.

That’s what I like to see in my reviews.

Yeah, really. That Apple 4K TV upscaling issue (having HDR on all the time) is a legitimate fuckup. Forcing HDR on non-HDR content makes it look terrrrible.

There's a queue outside the Birmingham, UK store and it's not busy inside. I think the staff are artificially trying to build buzz and hype and it's ridiculous. I feel awkward right now. The passers by must be looking at us and thinking "what absolute twats".

Haha, I tried but eventually gave up. Too hard (for me anyway) to take a representative shot due to the glass back and how the color under it changes with angle and light.

Like the comments on reddit are also saying, theres something wrong with that Series 2. Mine is absolutely nowhere near that slow.

Yea we sure that isn't a Series 1? Mine doesn't even take anywhere that long to turn on or do anything of the things he tried

Got my new Apple 4K TV.
Even when it did a test it did not recognize my cable properly. I changed it manually, it did another test, and the settings were fine, so just an FYI.
Unfortunately none of the movies I currently own are 4K HDR so I could not test that out (I for sure thought GoTG 2 would be since the code came from the 4K BluRay), but that is what it is.
At least when I rent something soon I can test it out.

It's almost 12PM EST and my store hasn't sold a single iPhone 8. We didn't get too many pre-orders, but I expected to sell some by now.
