Metal Gear: Survive is more fun than I expected

img41tgs2017.jpg

The spin-off Metal Gear Survive rightfully has its skeptics. After series mastermind Hideo Kojimadeparted Konami in a messy separation, fans questioned if Metal Gear games would ever be the same. When Konami announced Metal Gear Survive, it was a surprise – a survival action game with zombies? Even Kojima commented on how he didn’t see how zombies fit within the series. I went into my hands-on session for Metal Gear Survive just as doubtful as any fan about the game being something I’d even want to play. While I don’t think Metal Gear Survive will be an earth-shattering experience for the series, I walked away having more fun than I expected.

It does sound pretty neat, but if the single player isn't extensive it'll be a pass for me

Has anyone mentioned how large the open world is for finding resources?

Wait, Kojima said zombies wouldn't fit in MGS?

Isn't he the one that signed off on the
parasite zombies
in MGSV?

I'm a big fan of Kojima, but I always found that quote to be silly at best. I mean, a few years ago, Kojima literally said that he wanted Platinum's Metal Gear Rising to be about Gray Fox going up against nano-machine zombies.

Kojima is an egomaniac so I'm not surprised about his silly statements where he literally contradicts himself, probably without even realizing it.

Even if this is fun, there are way too many good games right now. I don't need to support this after how they handled Metal Gear, PT, and Kojima.

Hard pass.

never really doubted it'd be pretty fun, granted you're willing to accept it isn't MGS6 or whatever.

it's just undoubtedly going to be rife with all kinds of super shady microtransaction BS

This is the closest i'll ever get to Resident Evil X Metal Gear so i'm all for it.
Then there's also the fact to consider that every spin-off MGS game has been ace (Rising, Acid 1 and 2).
You don't need Kojima to make a fun game.

It's impossible to not have fun if the game has MGSV controls and gameplay.

Exactly what I was going to say. Given the game mechanics left behind by Kojima it'd be hard to mess it up entirely.

It's just a question of what the single player content is like and if it's ruined by microtransactions.

They're literally just copying directly over from MGSV which, from a gameplay perspective, is a probably one of the greats of all time. So I don't think anyone doubted it was going to be fun, they'd have to actively try to fuck it up (but hey, it is konami).

The reason everyone makes fun of it is because of how stupid it is and obviously came from a room of old ass executives completely oblivious to what people like about the property.

This game is going to have MGSV controls & gameplay. How could it not be fun? As long as it's being handled by people who care (& they seem to, considering they delyaed it to add single player), I don't see an issue with it.

I've been dying to play this, honesty. It looks rad as hell and I'm really excited to see what the post-Kojima explanation for these zombies is

He said that zombies shouldn't be the crucial part of a Metal Gear game, because the series has always been an action and stealth game with a political dramatic story with fiction, and I agree.

He had craziest shit than zombies in his games, but used as a metaphor for something, and not zombies just cause. At least that's my take.

Has it ever been said that it was delayed specifically so they could add single-player? I am aware the game will have a campaign (and I've heard it won't be very substantial), but I don't think it's ever been said that was the cause of the delay.

Sounds fun and quite interesting. But my main concern relies on the single player, it's gotta have a lot of content for me to buy it.

Seconded, hope to join you in some of that co-op goodness.

I’m softening a bit to the game itself but I can’t find it in myself to support Konami anymore. Maybe if impressions are incredibly solid, I’ll go for it used. At least that way they aren’t getting a penny from me.

Good rule of thumb for Kojima, he usually means the opposite of whatever he says.

Sounds like a mini-fortnite with MGSV controls. Sounds alright and I'll buy it discounted.

My future dream: "Konami announces Battle Royal mode for Metal Gear: Survive!"

because shoehorn in a lost brother and then make a story about them finding a treasure in the most cliche & boring way is amazing.

MGSV is more creative and memorable, period, even if you don't love it. UC4 is just bland, it's the most ''safe'' UC game I've ever played, they don't even had the nerve to kill off Sam.

I don't doubt it and never really have. My question is the same as it's ever been: to what extent and for how long? MGO3 was fun for a few rounds. Then things started revealing themselves, like how little depth there was to the gameplay, an essentially useless class system, and layers upon layers of microtransactions.

Welp, this was sooner than I thought but looks like the thread has been taken over by hot takes and reaction gifs.
