Switch or PS4 to complement a gaming PC?

This post is so biased lol. Look, I have owned all systems. I've supported Nintendo every generation but this one so far, and a lot of this reads like ultra biased Nintendo guy.

How is the Switch a better investment? Because you can already emulate its best game in much better quality. Buy the game. Play on PC. Sony's lineup has such a wide and diverse portfolio at this point it's insane to even compare these systems. The Switch is getting some cool stuff in the future. But it's all tame and graphically neutered to fit into that Shield GPU.

In my mind the Switch 2 is going to be the amazeballs Nintendo system.

I have no problems recommending the Switch to people, but Sony's console has amazing games, and you are overlooking so many good games it's pointless to even really make the argument. It's too obvious anyway. And please stop acting like Zelda is not just another open world game. Because it is. It just does things a bit differently and steals from the right games.

Ninty puts out scores of exclusives. So much so they didn't even put out a Zelda for Wii U. Just loads of them!
Of course it's biased, it's my own damned personal opinion. What do you want me to do, lie to the guy or post another boring and generic list wars post this thread is already full of? And no, I don't really consider any of the other ps4 exclusives I haven't mentioned worth buying a system over and especially because he's already played a lot of the already sparse ps4 exclusive library anyways as mentioned by his post. So really as to announced coming exclusives the must buy titles imo are Yakuza 6, The last of us 2, and maybe god of war. Then you've got some good titles like Yakuza 2 Kiwami and potentially if it comes here Fist of the North Star Kamurocho edition, and potentially Spiderman. That's all that comes to mind immediately in the future. There may be more depending on taste, but again this is my own opinion here not yours so if you have more games to post do it instead of complaining my taste isn't good enough for you.

If you like Nintendo games IMO Switch has already built up a more than respectable library. Outside of Zelda and Mario Kart, you've got ARMS, Mario and Rabbids, Splaoon 2, Mario next month, fast racing and snipperclips on the eshop,Pokken Tournament, Xenoblade in the next months.. Thats not to forget stuff like Skyrim and Doom for the holidays as you may prefer those on the PC or one of the other consoles. Or stuff like Ultra Street Fighter 2, puyo tetris( on ps4 as well) and Bomberman.

Since you are obviously interested, and owned, a PS4 before but say you've played everything you wanted to for now, wait another year and grab a $200 slim( I expect them to be that price this time in a year) for the 2018 lineup of Spiderman, God of War, etc.

Ps4 now and switch in next 18 or 24 months. Ps4 has more high quality exclusives and more games which s obvious. Switch has zelda, mario, splatoon...few average smaler games and 90% of other games re indies and multiplats. Also do you play mp? Biggest multiplat player count is on ps4 including pc. Also there wont be another zelda or 3d mario in next few years for sure. So you wont be late for singleplayer games.

Switch s way too much expensive for what it offers now. I d wait holiday 2018 for switch.
I disagree as far as console launches are concerned in recent history I'd put it in the great category.

I would have picked a nintendo console to answer this question in every previous gen, but I'll take The Last Guardian, Uncharted 4/Lost Legacy, Bloodborne, and Destiny 1 over Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8, Rabbids, and Mario Odyssey. But Metroid Prime 4 and whatever Retro studios comes up with could tilt the balance back even with Last of Us 2.

Depends what games your playing. Most Nintendo first party games on it are 60. Most third party are 30 fps. So yeah weaker versions of third party games or usually technically alright first party.
Actually most 3rd parties right now are 60fps aswell, especially if you include indies, that may change overtime but the switch is the machine for 60fps

It's up to you, if you can't live without Uncharteds, The Last of Us and God of War than go PS4, if you love Nintendo games like Mario, Pokemon, Metroid, Xenoblade2, Zelda etc and you want some third parties and all the indies/AA games on a handheld console too then go Switch.
I'm in the second case, i have a gaming PC to play everything and Nintendo Switch for exclusives and some third party, Switch handheld nature is awesome, indeed i can't wait to play on Switch games like FIFA 18 and Rocket League, even though i already have them on PC too, being able to play those games on a handheld is just awesome, and Switch is such a great piece of hardware, with snappy and fast OS that you are happy just to keep it in your hands, at least for me.

Can't believe how many people are focusing on exclusives rather than the portability.

Ask yourself if you ever struggle finding time
for gaming. Do you travel a lot. Do you value local co-op couch style with friends. Do you have long distance journeys often? Then consider the first party offerings. Biggest sell for my Switch is the pressure it eleviates by allowing me to find gaming time outside the house.

Both are great.

Ps4 has great exclusives. Just looking at this year you have stuff like Nioh, Horizon, Uncharted , Persona 5, Yakuza 0 and Kiwai, etc.
I own a decent PC, it's not high end but can play most modern games at 60fps. Yet I've really not touched it for gaming this year since I've mostly been playing one awesome PS4 exclusive after the other.
Also looking at the future some of my most anticipated games are Ps4 exclusives, God of War, Spiderman, the last of us 2, etc.
But I think that one thing to consider is that in terms of style it's not hard to find similar stuff on PC. You have Souls and souls-like games , you have big open world RPG's, you have cinematic adventure games , etc.

The switch on the other hand is still new and the catalog is growing. But it does seem to offer a type of games that isn't that frequent on other platforms. You don't have that many things comparable to Mario Kart or Splatoon or Mario on PC. And you also get the option to play all of those on the go.

In the end it will come down to what you prefer. Though personally I wouldn't like to miss out on either of them.

Tough question. I always go with nintendo and sony. No PC... it depends of your taste. Do you prefer sonys or nintendo’s exclusives!? Mario or Kratos!?

As the owner of a PS4 and a Switch along with a decently high end PC... I would say it depends on if your friends have a PS4 imo. Yeah the PS4 has really great experiences but the types of experiences Sony provides are available on PC even if a specific title isn't. I have friends with ps4s so I play games with them because they pay for my PS+. But the vast majority of my playtime is split between the PC and the Switch. I would still have the PS4 because there are a few exclusives I want to play and I have the money but I would go for the switch. Especially if you play indies, they are all on PC but if there's a switch version you can take it with you.

And if it's a third party AAA game it's good to wait on the PC version (sooo happy I didn't get FFXV).

Well, both systems can give you excellent exclusives.

Personally I received a PS4 as a gift and I'm literally diving in a PlayStation "nostalgia sea": Wipeout and Crash are so good.
Fighting Layer EX and Fear Effect will be the next ones.

I don't like any particular games on Switch, aside from Fast RMX I'd say ...

It's only a matter of preferences, OP.

(Also, I just realized that can't play handheld systems anymore... I don't know, maybe I'm too old. I prefer PC chairs or couch, literally lol)

OP, I'd suggest you get a Switch if they're really a toss up to you. This thread is full of bad reasons why, as follows:

More exclusives - this is highly unlikely. The Switch is Nintendo joining the x86, single screen, dual analog herd. Any 3rd party game will be an easy port to PS4, XB1, PC, and many even to iOS/Android. Trying to draw parallels between it's potential future lineup of exclusives with the 3DS is a fools errand, especially when we've seen one of the headliner 3rd party exclusives (Monster Hunter) already jump ship.

More diversity - this argument requires you to ascribe some sort of magical uniqueness to Nintendo's games but not to all the unique titles from other studios. Nintendo has Mario. Sony has Bloodborne. Nintendo has Zelda, Sony has Horizon. All great games, all unique standout games.

Portability - this is absolutely subjective. Some love it, some have no use for it. That is your call but remember that regardless of where you land on those two the performance hit relative to hardware cost is something everyone receives.

Now as to the good reasons why you, specifically, should get a Switch instead:

1. You said you already owned a PS4 up until a few months ago, so I assume you got a pretty good dose of the exclusive highlights. If you disagree with that then re-evaluate the PS4, but I'm assuming you played as much Bloodborne, Horizon, Nioh, Persona 5, Yakuza, etc. as you were in the mood for then. You aren't going to be more likely to play games you already passed over once just because you spent even more money to play in that ecosystem.

2. The PS5 is probably 2 years away on the high end, and will almost certainly be backwards compatible. So you can basically view the next couple years of Sony content as your content bridge for the PS5. Better yet, given that the PS4 Pro and boost mode are real things it goes to reason that the PS5 will play all PS4 games at Pro levels or better, so you'll get the best experience possible with those games.

3. The flip side of post #2, the Switch isn't even a year old yet and is rapidly outselling the Wii U or even 3DS at this stage. It's all but locked in to be Nintendo's primary platform for the next 5 years at a minimum, likely their flagship platform well into 2023 or 2024. That's a lot of life and therefore value for your money.

4. The Switch has a backlog of games you can dive into right now that'll give you something worth buying the system for, right now. I'm talking Zelda, Splatoon 2, MK8, Snipper Clips if you like co-op games, etc.. Lots of good exclusive content available to justify the purchase today. On PS4 you'll be waiting for holiday exclusives, next year's first party exclusives, etc.. If you have a nice gaming PC are you really going to be starved for games to play in Q4 2017 and Q1 2018? Doubt it, by the time you'd likely get around to that backlog you'll be another year closer to PS5.

Just my two cents evaluating your specific situation.

Switch if you want portability. PS4 if you want a huge library of exclusives.

And PS4 has another killer first half ahead. PC or Switch won't be getting Red Dead 2, Monster Hunter World, Spider-Man, God of War, Kingdom Hearts 3, Yakuza 6, Dissidia, etc...

That's a good point. With that said, in my case, I play my 3ds basically one time every other full moon and less than half an hour. I love Nintendo and I do like playing Mario Kart with some friends, but that's pretty much it. I barely travel, so a 3ds was basically a vanity purchase in my case. Since I don't travel a lot (not without driving anyways) and portability isnt something I'm looking for, exclusive games are definitely more important to me. Especially because like others mentioned, Switch is bound to get cheaper next year and with a way bigger catalogue.

I do like and praise Nintendo, but PS4 has the best exclusives.

It really depends on your gaming taste and if you value portability that much.

Based on a cursory glance of the first two pages, this thread in general is really downplaying the amount of exclusives the PS4 has now.

Oh, there is also one more thing to consider about PS4: the amount of JRPGs (the ones already on the system and the ones coming in the next months) is very, very good.

And, sadly, not all JRPGs arrive on Steam (for example: Persona 5 of FFXII Remaster).

So consider a PS4 if you like this genre.

Spider-Man, God of War 3 and The Last of Us 2 are already more than enough upcoming exclusive games that the PS4 will be getting that PC won't have and I'm stoked for. I'll get a Switch when it gets of a reasonable portable videogame. Right now is just not worth it in my case, I still have thousands of 3ds games to play.

If you have already played most of the PS4 exclusives you care about, I would buy a Switch now and the PS4 again at the end of it`s life. No point in waiting for the Switch, because the good first party games won't drop in price, while PS4 titles are really cheap after some time.

I own a 3ds. I've gave away 3ds AND ps4 games and repurshased them afterwards cheaper. Of course that Switch good first party games will drop price by let's say Black Friday of 2018. That's non-sense to say imo.

Honestly would say the Switch is the easy answer, unless you just don't like most of Nintendo's games, and have huge interest in most of Sony's upcoming 1st party titles.

If you are even or ambivalent to either company's 1st party games...then I'd still say the Switch. Sony has few exclusives outside of its 1st party line-up, the smallest they've ever had objectively vs. PS3 much less PS2. Most of those 3rd party exclusives are Japanese, a number I think will only shrink, because the few Japanese studios producing big $60 games are increasingly going multi-plat (so play those on PC).

Clearly Japan is increasingly favoring portable game machines, and straying away from home consoles given the Switch has sold faster in its first 6 months than the PS4. So more Japanese devs making portable experiences at a lower cost will opt for the Switch, and you'll probably see 3DS + mobile ports of stuff.

The vast majority of PS4 games released in 2017 will be $20 before BotW retails for $40.

Switch less overlap with PC
PS4 bigger library now
Switch more exclusives eventually
Nintendo vs Sony first party

Honestly, PC has noting for me that I can't already get on my PS4. If I'm planing to another system I would rather go with Switch that's PC, mostly because of

Common sense would say Switch, but right now it can't touch the PS4's exclusives. Can't lose either way.

Hate to be that guy, but get both.

I would pick a Switch for the first party software.

I enjoy Mario, Kirby, Donkey Kong, Zelda and Pokemon moreso than my favorite Sony IPs like Uncharted, God of War, Wipeout, etc.

Anyways, me personally, I already have a PS4, gonna build a new PC rig soon and planning to get a Switch next year :)

For now, go with PS4. Way more (and IMO better) exclusives than on Switch.

Get a Switch later. There might also be a "better" Switch in the Future. Slim/Pro/New/whatever version.

For all those saying that PS4 has more overlap with PC: This might become true for Switch games as well. Everything that's not produced by Nintendo might get ports later. Why should only japanese PS4-games end up on PC as well?

Factors:

Switch less overlap with PC
PS4 bigger library now
Switch more exclusives eventually
Nintendo vs Sony first party
Portability

Based on how Nintendo home consoles have finished compared to Sony home consoles, and also factoring in third-party exclusives as well, I doubt this will be true at all.

Look, use science to decide with an objective parameter. Like, wait a bit and buy the system with the 2017 GOTY. Simple.

Taking just the current libraries into account. PS4 no question.

But Switch has just launched so it has way more potential. How long do you hope this two system set up will lead you.

On PS4 you won't see
Super Mario Odyssey
Mario Kart
Zelda
Splatoon 2
Xenoblade 2
Metroid
Pokemon
Arms
Fire Emblem
Kirby
...

On Switch you won't see

Bloodborne 2 (possibly)
Days Gone
Horizon Zero Dawn
Gran Turismo
WilD
Spiderman
God of War
The Last of Us 2
Detroit
Dreams
...

Depends what 1st party lineup will appeal the most to you. I expect most smaller/ indy titles to be largely available on all platforms, and with a PC you are already covered for big AAA... The one big question mark of 2018 being Red Dead Redemption 2.

If you're speaking purely in terms of what will give you the widest variety of different experiences, then I think Switch is the clearest answer. It's not that the library is currently better - it's definitely not, but the type of games that are exclusive to Switch feel quite different and the portability brings something additional to the table not found on PS4. There are certain games that you will find yourself buying on Switch because of it's dual nature, even if it is on PC and other consoles.

ArtHands

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
Given that you had a Ps4 it will be better to get a switch to have a new game library

I've had a ps4 since launch, and I've always had a pc. got a switch on launch. IMO, Switch, easily, just for the portability and the Nintendo exclusives. I honestly haven't played a game on my Ps4 since the switch.
Bloodborne was bangin' tho...
