My iPhone 8+ is completely dead.
Sitting here watching college football. Checking Twitter off and on, some GAF. I set the phone down for about 30 minutes while I played Xbox. Turned off the Xbox, turned back on the football, picked my phone up and...nothing.
Home button does nothing. Wake button does nothing. Holding down wake button does nothing. Plugging the phone in to power does nothing. This thing is a brick.
The battery was plenty charged.
I guess I have to take it back to the store. I've had it a week. What the hell?

edit: Sounds like the phone might be a lemon and it's worth going back to the store and getting it looked at, but put it on the charger and leave it there for as long as you can before you need your phone again. I'm talking like 6+ hours. This worked for my 6 when it was on the last legs of its charge cycles.

sounds like a software problem. Have you tried hard restart?

Try a hard reset, the process is different on an 8.
Press and released volume up
Press and release volume down
Hold sleep wake button until Apple logo appears.

yep same here
ive heard it said a number of times that you get used to it but idk I like a phone I can grip in one hand comfortably
I also use Spotify on my phone for exercising and I imagine that would be particularly unwieldy with a plus model.. maybe with the money I saved I can put it towards an apple watch or airpods

Crazy to go from a brand new working phone to something thats basically a glass paperweight in a matter of 30 minutes, with the phone just sitting on the arm of my chair.
Luckily, I still have my 6S+ sitting here and put the SIM card in for the time being. And it's already making me wonder...do I really need an 8+ at all?
the craziest thing is that you don't get feedback from the homebutton when it's off. its honestly an insane feeling pressing that thing and not getting anything

That was exactly my experience. I guess the haptic feedback is really effective because without it, pressing on that home button literally does nothing and you never really realize it because of the haptic feedback.

The 4K Apple TV must be the most disappointing thing theyve released since the Newton. Holy shit! What a piece of garbage! HDR on 1080p content? Who thought this was a good idea?!? It looks like an Apple pie except instead of baking it you decided to throw it in a pot of boiling water! What. A. Dissapointment.

Im anal. Ive paid to have my TV calibrated. The problem is the Apple TV is applying HDR to non-HDR content completely dulling the color. Theyve apparently done this to keep the TV from switching between a standard profile and an HDR/DOlby Vision profile because they see it as inelegant. What is truly INELEGANT is having non-hdr and non-4K content upscale by the Apple TV as opposed to my TV which does a FAR better job.
I have a ton of iTunes film content that was generously upgraded by Apple to 4K HDR I just wish theyd allow owners the option of letting their TVs do the scaling.

Spot on. Apple is 100% in the wrong on this. I would return mine if it wasnt for the AirPlay mirroring functionality with the MacBook, that is worth an Apple TV for me.

Let's not go overboard. It is a fantastic device let down by one stupid software decision or flaw. Having a device like this, with both HDR and Dolby Vision support, as well as offering free 4k updates for HD films is a masterstroke. And for how annoying the lack of auto-switching is, the addition of 24Hz mode is a God-send.
I've owned every streaming device and this is easily the best for me - add Amazon Prime, give us the option to auto-switch and it will be golden. For now, leave HDR off until you need to watch something in it, which is probably like 1% of my content anyway.

I pretty much agree. Once they patch in mode switching, which I truly believe they will do, this will essentially be the perfect streaming box. At least for myself.
Just watched John Wick on it. That is a surprisingly pretty film with its use of colors, and the contrast of bright light sources versus shadow shows off HDR sublimely. Starting John Wick Chapter 2 right now

For parity's sake though, I am having an issue with Netflix. There seems to be no way to detect what material supports HDR or Dolby Vision though, unless I am missing something obvious.
I know, for example, that Defenders and Daredevil definitely support DV, but looking at the description it *just* says Ultra HD 4K, so either Netflix isn't supporting HDR/DV or you just have to guess, which is madness.

How bizarre! When I play them back they are definitely producing a Dolby Vision stream, as I enabled the developer HUD to check. I might try re-downloading the app. Thanks.

Using Xcode on my Mac. Just have to be on the same network as the ATV and connect devices and it opens up a developer menu in settings.
I solved my Netflix issue by uninstalling then reinstalling with HDR enabled. Strange quirk but it worked.

Have preordered the 8+ 256 hopefully it doesn't take too long to deliver

I ordered on the 28th and the original delivery estimate went from October 12th-19th then to the 9th and now the 5th.
I cant wait to read about the scarcity of the IPhone X and the preorder nightmare that will be.

Yes, but Ive never seen it go for as little as even the latest Apple TVs. My HTPC cost me $350, and does more than a WDTV.

The WD TVs were so good if you had the right setup
I carefully backed it up on iTunes but the recovery borked. There were literally a bunch of contacts from palm pilot and the olden days that straight broke but also in my defense my Apple tech told me I was going about it in the exact right way.
And the original bug - a known broken iCloud issue - is still happening as my new Apple tech just explained. Literally not my fault.
On the upside many (but not all) of my CarPlay issues have improved. Amazon music almost works!!!
I love my 8 plus but partially wish Id gotten regular size...

I traded it in and theres probably a weird emoji for how self satisfied I was yesterday versus how stupid I feel today.
Worth it for portrait mode.
Mrs Stinkles has the contacts I need but its amazing how primitive and faulty this process is in 2017. Some of it deliberately protecting custom anti consumer solutions.

I probably did and I feel like Im going to find a syquest 80 gig cable that doesnt work with 40 Gig and then kill myself.
I have no idea where my contacts are all stored. I sign in with gmail and icloud and they're all there. Probably in both by now.
