The PSN update system is a nuisance.

Let's talk about this because it's getting ridiculous. I don't play often, but every time I start up my Ps4 it prompts me to download a new update. Which is great. Because it means they're continuously improving the system, however:

1. You are unable to look at your friends list or interact with them in anyway.
2. You are unable to visit the PSN store.
3. You are unable to do anything which require any sort of dependence on PSN in any capacity.
4. The updates are never installed in the background, which means you are forced to restart your PS4, wait for it to update itself, then watch it restart again. This can happen several times depending on the update.

I'm getting frustrated at it because it doesn't seem to be intelligent enough to decouple the update system from your regular PS usage.

Is there anywhere we can provide feedback?

I've never had an issue with updates really - even on the odd times that I've turned on a console to see one waiting it's never taken long for the update to install.

If you're getting a system update every time you use the console, then your usage must be incredibly infrequent.

To me it's such a minor issue as some one who uses the console regularly, I'm sure people will tell you to use Rest Mode though so that you automatically install system updates and don't run into this.

Personally I think there are bigger fish to fry / bigger problems and never really thought this in particular was worth complaining about.

Akin to 3DS - if you try to go to eShop but aren't running the latest firmware it wants you to update.

The only platform I can think that allows you to do this is Xbox as for a certain period of time they allow previous system updates to continue playing online and usually support two firmwares at once for a period of time.

Hmm. I dont use mine that often, and I have it set in Rest mode. It installs the updates perfectly fine.

PSN and online use requires the latest updates. Same for the Xbone. If you're not going to use it on a regular basis then you have to accept that it will want updates. Same with all other technologies that use software updates over the internet.

If you're strictly talking system updates then this is a hyperbolic statement if you actually look at the history of the PS4 system software updates. Just use rest mode or be patient. Don't know what to tell you otherwise. My Xbox One takes a hell of a lot longer to update than the PS4.

Some stability updates are not mandatory, so you will still be able to view friends, play online, etc. From what you mentioned, you only log in every so often (damn how long do you wait months?)

There are system updates to install in background, but you have to enable it (I think?). Not sure if that is behind the PS+ paywall, but I don't do this for fear of A. bricked update due to bad firmware (has not happened yet, but you never know) B. in the middle of a game that hasn't been saved and its Rest Mode saved (not ideal, cause power outages could occur, but sometimes you just gotta send the bad boy to rest mode).

We're half way through October and there have been 7 updates this year so far, the first of which was in March. If you're being prompted to update every time you turn your console on then you're really not using it very often.

It seems like some of you think everyone uses rest mode.

I have been burned by it twice, so it's always annoying to update.

What updates.......

Hahaha.

If you are getting updates every time you turn your PS4 on, then yeah, you must turn it on once a year.

It never takes long to update. If you can manage to go without looking at your friends list for what appears to be months, since you never use the thing. I think you can hold out the extra 5 minutes.

lmao so you turn your system on once every several months? Oh the horror.

They solved this for people who didn't want to deal with downloading and installing updates back in 2013. It's been 4 years, OP.

I don't use rest mode. It's really not that big a deal to have to wait for 400mb to download and a few minutes for it to verify and install approximately 6 times a year.

The automatic update for my PS4 has never worked.
Every time there's an update, I have to sit through the download and installation.
And I have the system set to automatically update.

My XOne on the other hand has never had this problem.
The OS and games always update when I'm not around and are ready to go when I get home.

It's the little things like this that make me continually go back to my XOne while the PS4 gathers dust...

How the fuck would a system where PSN notices your system usage and tailors updates to your use even work, OP? It's nice to want things but how would this be executed?

Are you connected via ethernet? Because wifi on PS4 is fucking brutal for me.

I typically get 75-100mbps and all of my other devices in the same room download everything relatively fast...except my PS4 which crawls. When I do the connection test on the PS4 it's a good day when I clear 20mbps. It's such a piece of trash over wifi but that's kind of my fault for assuming a device released a handful of years ago would actually work reasonably well over a wireless network.

Do you leave it in rest mode (orange light), or do you turn it off?

Honestly that's how I use my day one edition of my XB1. It's really frustrating to have to update every time I turn on the damn thing, so much so that I use it even less and might not get back to playing red dead redemption. I also do not use sleep mode on XB1 because for a time, it would randomly turn on for no reason in the middle of the day even though it was already updated while I was using the PS4.

I don't know if system updates are automatic with PS+ only or not (off the top of my head) but my ps4 updates if I leave it in sleep mode.

I think it's an interesting idea to decouple the friends service from the update, but they probably want to keep the protocol in parity with whatever they've updated. Especially after the PSN breach during the PS3 era.

Well you wouldn't be too happy if you are in the preview program of Xbox as its often about a 20 minute wait where you can't do anything, almost daily it feels like.

I am connected on a powerline connection to a ADSL line that barely gets 8mbps.

The PS4 update process is fine and takes no longer than 10 minutes for me to do.

I'm not in the preview program but that is my experience though I blame myself since I never use it.

Nice contribution? Welcome to posting without substance?

What are you on about? A person should not be expecting the level of online interaction without fixes. Forgive me if a few minutes of maintenance of your investment is too much a nuisance and I feel no sympathy. It's the nature of the platform.

I honestly don't see what's so frustrating if you turn on your console once every month or two. So you turned it on September 1st and had a system update. 30+ days later you turn it on and it needs a system update. Where does the frustration come in? It's been a month or more since the last time you updated it.

Rest mode of course.

I'm in the Xbox Preview Program. I've never once seen the console update itself. It always seems to update automatically when I'm not around or using it.

The PS4 on the other hand, I can't get it to automatically update for anything... I have to sit through every OS update installation... It's very annoying.

Mine usually downloads and installs system updates automatically at around 4 am. Not sure why that time, specifically, but you can always do that if it'll make it easier.

Though tbh I've never thought the process of manually installing updates on the PS4 was much of a hassle, certainly not compared to the PS3. Whew, that console was a pain when it came to updates of any kind.

The moment you realize OP only has a PS4 since late June. Should have bought that Switch

Should I buy a Nintendo Switch or should I buy a PS4?
Also, surprised the switch is more expensive than a Ps4!

Rest mode of course.

Hmmm... You might just be unlucky with when you turn on your PS4, IIRC it only checks once or twice a day. Otherwise I wouldn't know what is preventing the auto-update(/download).

Unless you are missing the checkmark in the energy saving settings, for your PS4 to stay connected to the internet.

This post has 1000% more substance than telling people to play checkers. I agree with your point that if you want to be online you need to be updated. I only took issue with what seemed like a complete dismissal without any point or reason. Now you have provided clarity. Thank you.

It was a joke. There used to be a time where you could throw those on the internet without having to say so. Maybe I'm just getting old.

I set my PS4 to auto download and install updates, so this sort of thing doesn't affect me often. Now and again it does.

I do not really have a problem with the amount of system updates. Maybe it is because I usally play every day. But I do not have the feeling that they are releasing system updates that often. Maybe every 2 to 3 months. Except there was a annyoing bug found in the latest release. Besides that it usually takes me 2 to 5 minutes to download and install the update. Nothing really time consuming. I usually spend this time going to toilet or getting some food-

IMHO it is not a big deal that they won't let you online if you are on a outdated firmware. The reason behind this is probably to lock out old people that do not use an official firmware. Also it forces people to do updates. Otherwise it could happen that people simply do not update their PS4 that often. Which at the end could cause compatibility issues or stuff like that. I do not want to know how much people are using an outdated Windows.

1. On the app
2. On the app
3. On the app
4. Yeah it just downloads it.. unless there is a way to do it.

And i'll tell you something, the way ps4 updates is far better than any other system. lol.

Those updates are letting us know that greatness awaits.

I feel you.

I find that every week I have an update for either a game or one of my consoles.

I don't play my xbox one much and so I wouldn't leave it on standby to auto update. It is a hassle, but it is part of modern gaming and something that isn't going to change any time soon.

If you want to feel real update pain, turn on a network connected PS3 you haven't touched since you got a PS4 2 years ago.
