Batteries the CRISIS!
I remember during the Wii era, there was a long period of time when people asked "Where is Mario? Where is Zelda?"

2017, we have an amazing Zelda, and by all evidence provided so far, an amazing Mario.

Who the hell said that?? Here are the Mario and Zelda games on the Wii by N.A. release date:

November 2006: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
November 2007: Super Mario Galaxy
November 2009: New Super Mario Bros. Wii
May 2010: Super Mario Galaxy 2
November 2011: Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Like, maybe in early 2009 people started to wonder where Mario and Zelda were, but any other point you choose during that time was less than a year away from a Zelda or Mario release. Nintendo released more Mario games for the Wii than for the N64 and GameCube combined. It wasn't hurting for these games.

Anecdotally, most people I've spoken to loved Horizon but cooled on it a little after getting far into the game. Zelda on the other hand I've not heard anyone say they'd had enough of.
This may be because Zelda is anywhere from a 20 to a 120 hour campaign, depending on your personal pace. So when a player starts to tire of it, they'll kust naturally head over to Ganon and get the ending.

Meanwhile Horizon is still a 40 hour game, even if you're just mainlining the story. And some sections are very, very slow. A lot of points to step off and away.

Odyssey looks to be quite a game! Looking forward to launch day~

Also, wow; what happened in here? The Horizon Guy again? Geez.

Also shocked to see so many people stick up for the what I believe is the worst modern Zelda (SS), but whatever; not everyone shares my tastes!

OFF THE RAILS!

IT'S TIME TO RAISE OUR SAILS

I love the sunset on the Horizon. Almost reminds me of the kind of vistas one might see in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for Nintendo Switch.

GTA IV being a 10/10 makes exactly as much sense as Gran Turismo or the original Half-Life having perfect scores. Even if they haven't aged well, their importance in the moment can't be overstated. It was a generation-pushing game, aiming to be something beyond the present capabilities of the medium. Even if it hasn't aged well, reviews rewarded that ambition. IV marked Rockstar taking a crack at telling complex character-driven drama within the GTA structure. They made mistakes along the way, but they were in uncharted territory. You don't get to Red Dead Redemption without the lessons learned by making GTA IV.

problem is, gta 4 wasn't a 10/10 even when it was released.. a TON of people complained at the time about the votes, and while i can understand what blew some reviewers away about the game (especially compared to it's sequel, gta V), that game definitely wasn't a 10/10 in my book

but i also didn't like red dead redemption either and stopped playing after reaching mexico,so games made "the rockstar way" are probably just not my thing

Horizon talk in a MARIO Odysslay 10/10 Thread?

Why am I not surprised?

well,we don't know much about either the review or the game at the moment,we must talk about something don't we?

lol great stuff lemme try.

I think this game will get *zero* mediocre review scores with them on the *horizon*, it'll be a *breath* of fresh air to many when the game is released to the *wild*.

Wink-wink-nudge-nudge.

The one thing that'll affect Horizon will be The Frozen Wilds when that comes out in November. If that's a really strong DLC Package (like say, Witcher 3 level) that could swing things. Of course, it can counter swing if the Zelda DLC comes out as well (The mixed reception to Master Quest doesn't seem like it'll shift things at present) but we don't know when the Zelda DLC coming out, maybe it's a surprise November release, maybe it's next year. PUBG is also a wildcard in that mix as well.

But we are getting very off topic here. Looking forward to Mario, but reviews are meaningless all in all compared to ones own opinion. Gonna have to play it on my brothers Switch when he's home from uni in the holidays (There isn't enough to justify my own yet when I can borrow his.)

Yeah I never finished a rockstar game, I’m not into open worlds that much I guess...still haven’t finished Zelda and feel it’s a bit overrated, but maybe I never gave it enough time to get that hook.

Honestly spend most of my Switch time with Mario Kart. But I will finish Zelda soon, I will!!!

Bullshit. If that was true that game would've won GAF's 2011 GOTY Award and it didnt. I still cant believe that that game got a 10 in many places. It stands for everything opposite to what BotW ended up doing that made it such a critical and commercial success to the likes SS never had a chance.
BotW isn't the end all be all of Zelda. I love Zelda mainly for dungeons and puzzles and BotW is pretty bad in that regard. BotW really could have used some structure.

It was extremely tedious though. I struggled to finish the game, it's definitely a weak entry and should no way get 10s.

I don't read reviews for flagship Nintendo games, especially Mario, what's the point I know it's going to be great.
Eh, but it's not to everyone. The things Skyward Sword has you do and pacing are actually marked improvement over previous games, Twilight Princess especially. Twilight Princess takes forever to get going and is plagued with menial quests between every dungeon, whereas traveling between dungeons in Skyward Sword felt much better because the stuff they asked me to do was actually fun and challenging. Skyward Sword even took one of the worst concepts from Twilight Princess, the tears of light collectathons, and turned them into something challenging, intense, and fun. It should get a 10 just for pulling that off.

And deservedly so.

It nailed a crapton of things right. A groundbreaking new Ip that openened doors and shattered barriers that stood in the way of female enpowerment.

Its also got the best story and gameplay in my opinion this year, by quite far.

It will be refreshing to see it win over another Mario and another Zelda. Whose both are established franchise that have been going on since more than 15 years.

Its important that Horizon wins as many GOTY as possible.

Why is it "important"?

In what way is it "groundbreaking"?

"openened doors and shattered barriers that stood in the way of female enpowerment." *rolls eyes* it had a female main character, so do many, many other games.

Zelda redefined openworld games, didn't rely on cutscenes to push the game along and was a breath of fresh air in an oversaturated, tired genre.

But I'm still confused why it's "important" Horizon wins lots of GOTY though and please don't reply "coz female empowerment".

EDGE 10/10 Games so far.

Super Mario 64 (1996)
Gran Turismo (1997)
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998)
Halo: Combat Evolved (2001)
Half-Life 2 (2004)
Halo 3 (2007)
The Orange Box (2007)
Super Mario Galaxy (2007)
Grand Theft Auto IV (2008)
LittleBigPlanet (2008)
Bayonetta (2009)
Super Mario Galaxy 2 (2010)
Rock Band 3 (2010)
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (2011)
The Last of Us (2013)
Grand Theft Auto V (2013)
Bayonetta 2 (2014)
Bloodborne (2015)
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017)
Super Mario Odyssey (2017)

If you take out Rock Band 3, Skyward Sword, GTAIV and LBP... that list is incredibly on point.

Also, I hope the comparing is just for fun and giggles and you guys aren’t actually still sticking and fighting for one brand lol.

Been playing Crash 1-3, GTS, Horizon, Splatoon, Mario Kart, Uncharted spin off, P5, DQB, Wipeout Collection and even my favorite fighter SFV is getting a big update in January. Not to mention I still haven’t finished RE7 or Farpoint in VR. Tons of smaller amazing titles like Thumper, Overcooked, etc...just an amazing year for gaming. And we’re finishing it off with a seemingly great classic Mario game.

I dunno, just hard to be unhappy lol

Was it actaually fun, though? .
If I am playing a game,it needs to at least attempt to tell a good story, and discuss important themes.

If I am playing for mechanics, its either challenging, and deep or a competitive multiplayer.

Nintendo occupies a middle ground that I find hard to appreciate these days. Really cute, cool sometimes smart game design ideas in a cute looking package that almost always ends up being shallow ,and emotionally, intellectually unengaging.

I've tried ,but that company's games and machines aren't for me.

A GOTY should aim at being more than just "fun!" imo.

It goes without saying that this is just my opinion.Mario continues to sell million of games every single year.

As expected the same select few people who say they don't like Nintendo consoles, or the games, yet seem to spend all their time on Gaf in Nintendo threads.

Why not just go on to another thread and discuss things that do interest you? I couldn't care less about mobile games, so I'd really never feel the urge to even read threads on them, let alone constantly post in them.

Now I'm not saying I expect threads to be one big circle jerk with nothing but sunshine and rainbows, but some of the people here are trolling.....

Yeesh at that "it's important that horizon wins goty awards"
Those threads are going to be a blood bath x graveyard

If it really is like Mario 64 I'll be so happy:3

@Moose84

Maybe we can stop using this an a insult or negstive against a game when it’s a design choice. (Storytelling through cutscene linear progression etc..)

I finished Horizon in a week, full platinum. The focused more linear story is very much responsible for that. Zelda I loss interest and the world is so overwhelming it’s hard to pick back up. Also a bit boring IMO. But there’s challenges and discovery that can’t be replicated without having an open world free roam design like that. Just different design choices each has benefits and cons imo.

So maybe you played Witcher and every AC and Farpoint game and grown tired of the genre, but I really don’t know what you’re talking about with a saturated genre. Can’t relate at all. Like saying there’s too many action movies lol

So Galaxy 1 & 2 were also 10's...retrospectively do GAF agree? I own them but never got round to playing them

Dude. You're in for a double dose of delight.

I'm not the one diverting the thread talk

"My favourite game deserves every GOTY and this game I don't like doesn't" is obnoxious, I dunno if the sassygifs and slaytalk are much better :V

The first Galaxy was a monumental feat to achieve and get so much right on the first attempt, a truly excellent game.

Galaxy 2 was that but with more, better and more creative levels with the rather important addition of Yoshi who was fantastic unlike in Sunshine as well as fixing several of the problems of the first game (lack of challenge, poor implementation of prankster comets, coins were mostly redundant, needing to complete the game as Mario to unlock Luigi and a lack of post game content in general). I'd always recommend playing Galaxy first because it's great but Galaxy 2 is the better game IMO.

You really should fix that. :)

And yes, they are still 10s IMO. Games of the Generation for me.

Edit: And I'll also chime in and say SMG2 gets the edge as the better overall game, although the highs that SMG1 hits soundtrack-wise are still unbeatable.

depends what kind of gamer you are and how you like your mario

for some , galaxy 1 is a 10 and the sequel is still good but inferior

to others, myself included, galaxy is ok with some spikes of brilliance, but didn't really tapped into all its potential until the sequel which is a goddamn masterpiece.

I wish someone made a documentary about Nintendo. I'd love to find out more how the company operates and how they keep making classics over a 30 year timespan.

Dungeons yah but BoTW had pretty inventive puzzles around the overworld on those Shrines and out.

A heck of a lot of talent is the key thing of course. Like just look at Koizumi's CV... I mean wow, it's just something else entirely.

And yeah I'd also like to see something like this. Has Miyamoto ever discussed a possible biography or autobiography after he retires? I'd buy it day one for sure.

Nice.
Are we actually going to stoop so low again as the year when salty Bloodborne players started sending PMs to people that didnt use much GAF anymore, and campainging on twitter so they still voted for bloodborne to win over the witcher 3?

Because you seem as salty as fuck as people where that year.
