Super Mario Odyssey - 10/10 from Edge

This is why I haven't picked it up yet. it just looked generic to me, and once I learned that it had crafting, it was a definite "nope". I absolutely hate crafting in games. Mario is always special though.

It was fun, certainly more than Breath of the Wild. But I'm in the minority of people who didn't like it, despite being a huge Zelda fan. Horizon absolutely deserves to be mentioned in the GotY conversation. And I say that as someone who avoids most modern open world games like the plague.

I had lot's of fun with it thanks.

BTW, surely the fact that there are 10x PS4 users is probably more likely the reason Nintendo won't with GoTY

Horizon won’t win Gaf’s game of the year. It will be lucky to come third because there’s a TON of Nintendo fans on here aswell as new converts because of Switch. Not that it means it’s a bad game or anything. I actually bought it in the PSN sale earlier this week and I’m looking forward to starting it this weekend.

Anecdotally, most people I've spoken to loved Horizon but cooled on it a little after getting far into the game. Zelda on the other hand I've not heard anyone say they'd had enough of.

I dropped it as soon as Breath of the Wild came out and haven't gone back since. I don't think they could have released it at a worst possible time for me.

I’d say it’s fun. But your ymmv just like every game.

Extremely fun.

If I am playing a game,it needs to at least attempt to tell a good story, and discuss important themes.

If I am playing for mechanics, its either challenging, and deep or a competitive multiplayer.

Nintendo occupies a middle ground that I find hard to appreciate these days. Really cute, cool sometimes smart game design ideas in a cute looking package that almost always ends up being shallow ,and emotionally, intellectually unengaging.

I've tried ,but that company's games and machines aren't for me.

A GOTY should aim at being more than just "fun!" imo.

It goes without saying that this is just my opinion.Mario continues to sell million of games every single year.

Good to see a sort of consensus on the game. I’ll definitely tkry pick it up in a few years when it gets remastered for the PS5 or whenever I buy another PS4. It just didn’t hype me like “OMG I HAVE to buy the Switch right now to play the new Zelda!” like BotW, did. In my opinion it’s not anywhere near GOTY worthy at all. I’ll probably have fun with it whenever I get a chance to play it, though. And like others have said, I don’t hear talk from people around town about Horizon. It’s about getting a new Switch, that new Zelda game, or the new Mario that’s coming soon. It may win best graphics, but Mario and Zelda will be the ones competing for the win this year.

I will not stand for Rock Band 3 hate ITT

One of the best music games with on of the best music game setlists, period.

I mean, the on-disc setlist is probably the worst of the first three games, but the package as a whole is super polished and offers up all kinds of options for every instrument so you can find the best way to play, along with some really nice online connectivity features. And hell, the on-disc setlist not being great isn't even a big deal for something like Rock Band, since there are literally thousands of songs you can buy to play through. I wouldn't give it a 10 myself, but the argument is clearly there for why someone would.

Nice.
Are we actually going to stoop so low again as the year when salty Bloodborne players started sending PMs to people that didnt use much GAF anymore, and campainging on twitter so they still voted for bloodborne to win over the witcher 3?

Because you seem as salty as fuck as people where that year.

oh god,really?

that's...sad.

Wow that’s pathetic if that actually happened.

Horizon isn't even the best PS4 exclusive, Nioh is. Honestly puzzles me how people sleep on this game. Nioh is so much more fun it's not even funny. Its gameplay blows Horizon completely out of the water. P4P best gameplay all year along with Zelda and possibly Mario soon.

And deservedly so.

It nailed a crapton of things right. A groundbreaking new Ip that openened doors and shattered barriers that stood in the way of female enpowerment.

Its also got the best story and gameplay in my opinion this year, by quite far.

It will be refreshing to see it win over another Mario and another Zelda. Whose both are established franchise that have been going on since more than 15 years.

Its important that Horizon wins as many GOTY as possible.

More than 30 years, not 15, and that makes it a bigger achievement since very few series have more than 3 absolute top tier games.

No way that happened !! Are there screenshots of the PMs or something like that ? (PM me the link if so, I don't want to derail the thread with that).

Shallow? They make games with excellent gameplay. Also, what are emotionally and intellectually engaging games for you?

With respect, you're entitled to your opinion, and it's a shame you can't enjoy games like this more but

- one might argue that some titles attempting to be more emotionally or intellectually engaging are actually shallow themselves, and paling in comparison to emotionally and intellectually engaging products in other media
- some might also argue that a lot of such titles also use heavy cinematic emphasis to detract from weak, repetitive or otherwise boring gameplay

At the end of the day games (or interactive entertainment - if you prefer to use industry marketing speak) are a distraction. They're something you exchange money for, in order to receive some sort of reward that eats up hours of your life. They should be satisfying, and that's the bottom line. Whether they're satisfying because they're beautifully designed and engineered to be fun to play, or because they try something bold and envelope pushing in other ways, as I'm sure some of the games you're talking about do, it's all good.

I would still say most of us are in this hobby to have fun though.

Horizon's a fine game, but this year is so stacked that I don't understand why people are still talking about it. Even if you've only got a PS4 you could still play Nier.

Edit: wait, this is a Mario thread?

This is true. Horizon is like the 3rd best PS4 exclusive this year after Persona 5 and Nioh so it would be a shame if it won GOTY. I wouldn’t be surprised though. This is the same forum that gave Uncharted 4 GOTY last year.

Horizon is an incredibly polished Ubisoft-style checklist simulator with decent combat.

If it wins GotY on GAF that'll be a real shame. It's not even close to being in contention with a masterpiece like BotW.

I'm sure it's different for everyone. When I played Horizon it was basically the only game I was playing for a few weeks. I loved the combat and was thoroughly engrossed in the story and its background lore. I wanted to do and see everything I could in that world. It's the only game I've ever bothered to get a Platinum trophy for (though to be fair, it wasn't that hard to get).

I've been enjoying BOTW and exploring its world, but it's also been something I've been satisfied playing in small bursts over the past couple months. There isn't a huge overarching narrative, and perhaps that works in the game's favor. I can step away from it for a few weeks without feeling like I've lost the thread of the story (something I didn't feel like I could do in more story-heavy games like The Witcher 3 or Horizon). It's something I don't mind taking breaks from so I can play other games in the meantime. I wouldn't say I've cooled down on it, but I just haven't played it with the same fervor as Horizon Zero Dawn. And that's ok, since I've also found BOTW to be a great travel game as well, thanks to the Switch's portability. It's nice to be able to play BOTW when I don't have access to my other systems.

And I'm definitely excited for Super Mario Odyssey as well. Been tough to find the time to play all these games this year, but I love the fact that all these great games are coming out across all these platforms.

So Galaxy 1 & 2 were also 10's...retrospectively do GAF agree? I own them but never got round to playing them

Up until BotW, Galaxy 1 & 2 were probably my favorite games of all time.

Visually they still hold up because of the simple style, so if you can find a way to play them I definitely encourage it. It's worth noting that I'd probably burn out on playing 1 & 2 back-to-back tho. Very similar games.

I was so damn impressed with Zelda that I was really hoping Nintendo would re-invent their new Mario game in a similar fashion. I hear it's not quite like that but it still does enough different to have me excited for it.

I was expecting very high review scores, honestly. It looks damn fun.

Eh. Horizon was alright. Great visual design and well designed protagonist that rises above most. That being said. The actual gameplay was serviceable and the story didn't hook me like I thought it would. It felt way more Far Cry then I expected.

BotW easily wins it for me over Horizon. That being said I'm interested how the sequels will improve gameplay wise to give it a stronger identity.

Galaxy 2 is my all-time favourite game. It's a blast from A to B with the greatest OST ever.

I am sure Odyssey will be 10/10 worthy all-round but I highly doubt it'll top Galaxy 2 for me at all.

Best dungeons in the series and great story; areas BotW does very poorly in comparison.

The real issue with that list is 3D World being snubbed :p

Ancient Cistern and pretty much the whole desert was fantastic. (The rest: meh or worse) But 1/3 good, 2/3 bad doesn't make an overall good game.

3D World isn't as fun alone, but still good from start to finish. Deserves a 10 more than that at least.

Chances of it happening are as close to zero as possible.

DLC is around the corner to put it back in people's heads, and not long after Odyssey. It's more likely than you think.

Uhhh, nope. I wouldn't be surprised if Xenoblade 2 ranks higher once it comes out. Zelda and Mario have those top 2 positions locked.

All I'm reading is about Zelda and Horizon in a Mario Odyssey thread...

I guess there's only so much you can talk about when a magazine gives a game that nobody's played yet a high score. You can compare the review score to games you HAVE played being one of them. Basically it's a bit of a non-thread in a way because nobody has played the game so nobody is in a position to talk objectively about whether the 10/10 is deserved so it descends into speculation about money-hatting, Nintendo bias, nostalgia glasses and the fact that EDGE gave a game I didn't like a 10/10 a decade ago.

Horizon was great, but I won't remember it in 2 years, it never felt like it was doing anything that hadn't been done before just with a fresh coat of paint, BotW taking the focus away from solving quests and putting it on exploration, which is always one of my personal favorite elements in games anyways, felt more groundbreaking. It changed the world from merely something to get from one bit of game to another bit of game and made it the core focus of the game itself. Not to say the method of going from quest to quest is worse than what BotW did, there's a reason that's the been the template for how open world games have been designed for a decade, but Zelda felt much more unique and groundbreaking than Horizon in that regard imo.

"To be fair, you need to have an extremely high IQ to understand the subtleties of Rick an- I mean, intellectually stimulating games like Horizon Zero Dawn and other super deep narratives like The Order 1886...."

Dude, one of the biggest selling points for horizon was check out the sick robot dinosaurs. It's a good game but come on. Same goes for Tomi.
