UK: The Evil Within 2 sells 75% less than first game (physically) at launch

The Evil Within 2 sold less than a quarter of what the first game did physically at launch in the UK.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2...hin-2-physical-sales-were-quarter-of-original

And then there was The Evil Within 2. Despite charting in third place, there was a gulf in sales between it and Shadow of War. Worse, it sold less than a quarter of The Evil Within's 2014 physical launch total.

This includes Amazon sales and doesn't include digital sales. Though digital wouldn't have offset this poor physical launch due to the UK being significantly less adoptive of buying games digitally than other countries due to digital usually being more expensive than physical games there.

The first Evil Within sold about 60k units (physical) in its launch week in the UK (thanks Bruno MB for the past sales information) meaning TEW2 sold less than 15,000 copies physically.

Breakdown of the game's sales by platform (from Bruno MB):

Code:
[Week 41, 2017] THE EVIL WITHIN 2 (BETHESDA SOFTWORKS) ~ 15,000

PlayStation 4 ~ 10,350
Xbox One ~ 4,350
PC ~ 300

[Week 42, 2014] THE EVIL WITHIN (BETHESDA SOFTWORKS) ~ 60,000

PlayStation 4 ~ 28,200
Xbox One ~ 16,200
Xbox 360 ~ 6,600
PlayStation 3 ~ 6,000
PC ~ 3,000

So it looks like the game is outright not selling well. Some people were suggesting that the PC version was underperforming due to the removal of Denuvo...

I'm enjoying it a lot more than the first, to be honest. But Bethesda didn't really promote this game, and set it to release at the same time as South Park and a week before Wolfenstein II, Mario Odyssey and AC Origins. October is a massively crowded month. No wonder it's underperforming.

The game was barely promoted, but I think the streaming and Youtube attention during Halloween season may drive sales. PewDiePie played it on the 14th, to the tune of almost 2 millions views so far.

Steam reviews and user reviews on metacritic are notably very positive, which suggests good word of mouth compared to the first game.

See how it does over the course of October, I think it may have more life in it than expected.

Also Steamspy reporting 56K in its third day , I know it needs a week for accurate numbers but this is an indicator on how things are going , A Big shame but predicted

The " Using word of mouth through streamers and Youtube figures " with minimum marketing didn't help RE7 and again it didn't help TEW2 , It could help indie games and AA games but it won't help AAA games , If you used it on AAA games , you will get Indie and AA Sales numbers

Whats going on with UK retail? Only thing that survives is FIFA?

I dunno man, but it's weird. Practically every sequel is down. COD has been dropping off. Most big MS sequels have dropped off. Destiny has dropped off. I'm not sure about big EA releases. I think Ubisoft is doing generally okay, although wouldn't be surprised to see South Park underperform. I think Uncharted 4 did well, Forza Horizon 3 has had the most incredible legs, but on the whole the retail market seems to be in a really bad place.

People buying more from Amazon and other online (which Chart Track doesn't include), and more digital purchases. Probably pick up at Xmas where games are bought during food shopping etc.

Hardly any marketing
crowded month
fist game was divisive

Not really surprising sadly.

It is said that the first game sold 5 million copies. If the number is accurate it's not really surprising they made a sequel.

Amazon and most other major online retailers are tracked by Chart Track:

Wait. They don't even track sites like Amazon? Are these number believable at all, then? There always has to be a big *excluding digital sales-note in there anyway, but if they are not even counting online retail sales, this seems to be largely useless other than to judge the most big picture trends possible?

EDIT:

Well, there we go. Thanks Shiggy!

Yea Evil Within I've hardly seen any Marketing for it over here and I bet a lot of people in the UK are waiting on AC Origins and Mario this month or got Fifa. The 27th is gonna be an interesting chart week.

I know I've passed on games (Shadow of War) this month because of Mario and AC Origins, that said because of the lord of the rings licence I expect Shadow of war to have a long tail.

The first one sold well because people thought they were getting Resident Evil 4.5, that trick only works once.

I liked it more than RE 4 but that's irrelevant

I thought the absence of PS3/X360 versions was one of the reasons , Turned out that they were only 12K out of 65K in the original , So that makes no difference

Lots of bigger games coming out soon, digital sales, possibly with Brexit and the economy being a bit unstable, some people might wait for a price drop on some games now.

I've certainly been buying less games day 1 and buying more games in sales, as prices seem to have dropped pretty fast on some games lately.

Not surprising, sadly, and just the next game in a line of Bethesda underperformers. Bethesda doesn‘t really seem to know what to do with games like Dishonored 2, Prey or The Evil Within 2. Those are all great games that are pretty much flying under anyone‘s radar and don‘t seem to be receiving much marketing. On the other hand, strictly single player experiences don‘t tend to be what the market is into nowadays either.

Considering Evil Within wasn‘t very well received, I homestly wonder if it was a good idea to make a sequel to begin with. Maybe a new IP would have been a better course.

Oh well. At least Wolfenstein 2 should be doing fine.

Games are going more and more to just a select few titles, leaving everyone else fighting for scraps. These are headlines we are going to see for a ton of more releases.

My mate loved the first one and he didn't even know this was coming out lol. They pretty much sent it to die with the non-existent marketing.

The UK market has been in trouble for quite a while, games fall in value so fast after day 1 now that people are realising its pointless buying them straight away when they'll be half the price inside a month in some cases. This is a problem for publishers as what ends up happening is people skip it day 1 then get distracted by other entertainment and never come back and actually pick it up.

Feels like it was sort of send out to die without much marketing behind it. Picked up a digital copy yesterday. Hopefully I can dig in later this week.

I love Pokken!
0 marketing + packed month.

Bethesda/Zenimax must knew this was gonna happen or else they need to get their shit together.
