FFXI in 2017

This might be my last post in this thread, as interest appears to have died down a bit. But I hope a people enjoyed reading about my journey.

'Twas good stuff, especially the bits about the original Japanese names - Haven't been through that a long time ago, often with months between missions, it's neat to get a nice overview of how someone's experiencing at a nicer pace nowadays.

I'm kind of jealous. When I played I was on PS2, and saving images of a game I was playing was pretty new to me, and I took screen shots of everything, but it's all lost. The HDD is long gone, and I can't get back into my account (didn't sell it, just the password isn't working, and I don't care enough to deal with SE about unlocking it). Treasure your nice quality screens, and your journey. Vana'diel is such an awesome world. Save them to a HDD or popular cloud storage service, not a web image host, those can expire or die.

SE Bring this thing to the current gen with a remaster and offline!

So quite a bit has happened since I last made a post.

Anyways, at this point I am fully invested in FFXI and well into the Rise of the Zilart. I'm enjoying the game quite a bit. As it turns out, Chains of Promathia appears to have been carefully written so that it can be enjoyed in this order and I think it's working out for me. As of now I'm focusing on finishing Zilart before I move back to Promathia, which I'm guessing will involve increasing my level cap even further. There's a lot to love in FFXI, but I've put in an ungodly amount of time into it even with all the shortcuts now available. I can't imagine the way the game originally had to be played, especially when it's full of very vague hints as to where to go. I can only imagine my song pilgrimage being crowd sourced as people scoured maps to find the headstones. And I still think some of the design decisions are really questionable. Like sticking a necessary ??? spot right under a true sight level 80 enemy that doesn't really have the freedom to move away from it for a leveling quest. Or the ??? spots in general. If I hadn't been following a guide, would I just be endlessly scouring maps for ??? spots with no visible clues for many quests and missions? It's really the story that's kept me going through the game. I've hit some hiccups as a solo player - Temple of Uggalepih required help from a linkshell member after I died due to a bomb and it became apparent that the torches would probably time out before I managed to get them all lit anyways. But I want to try to complete at least Promathia.

This might be my last post in this thread, as interest appears to have died down a bit. But I hope a people enjoyed reading about my journey.

These are great and I love that people are still having fun with this game! I think I've been convinced to do a fresh character on Asura and relive some of the adventure myself, although I may use my wife's account and dual-box to make parts of it easier.

Got full sparks gear for my THF and reforged my THF abyssea armour to 109. Started on the Rhapsodies missions and holy hell the key items you get are amazing. The XP bonuses alone are godly, but being able to summon 5 trusts is also amazing. With an EXP ring, I was getting almost one merit per kill in Escha Ru'Aun (Grey sky).

Before I reactivated I had completed all the story missions through Wings of the Goddess. Once Rhapsodies started mentioning Adoulin stuff, I put that on hold for Adoulin missions. Hit a fame requirement roadblock so I'm just doing quests now to get my fame up so I can continue those.

Thanks again for making this thread, OP. I didn't realize how much I actually missed this game.

Is the Mumor / Uka Totlihn of the Sunbreeze Festival really soloable ?
As much as I spam them I can't seem to get past the cheer/clap/wave part of the event.

Yeah. Should be. I soloed it a couple years ago during the event. All I did was set up macros for all the proper emote reactions and it worked on my first try. It should work as long as you don't miss any I think.

That was me being stupid, I spoke to the wrong Moogle, I only realised that like 5 min ago.

Trust: Mumor II is mine, yay ^^

Not sure where else to post this because I can't find a FFXI 2017 OT. I've always wanted to play FFXI, but back when it was released I was still on 56k so it was quite impossible. Anyway, thanks to a sale this month ($10 for the entire collection), I finally jumped in and I'm REALLY enjoying it. I honestly haven't felt this way playing an MMO since Ultima Online - there's a genuine sense of exploration and adventure that has since gone the way of the dodo in modern MMOs. It's just an amazing experience, albeit VERY slow if you're coming in from FFXIV or even FFXII.

Anyway, the reason I'm posting this is because I just defeated the boss at the end of the base game's story and started Rise of Zilart, but was greeted with an apparent retcon of the scene I LITERALLY just watched 10 minutes ago. Like.. did I miss something or is was that really a cut-and-dry retcon? Pretty disappointing if so.

I reactivated and transferred to Asura with the discount campaign. Going to do a fresh character on my son's old account starting with nothing and playing through the story campaigns.

Remember that Zilart was an expansion that, in Japan, came out after the original game. It was a "previously on" scene.

Hmm, okay that explains a bit. I rewatched the cutscene just now and I see now that it may not have been a retcon per se, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qO1hf4FBtpo#t=26m48s) as they used the flashes of light to hide the Zilart stuff.

They also set up some plot points in the base game throughout the Jeuno parts of the nation missions, and early nation-specific mission scenes also grow in relevance in later missions that were released with Zilart, which generally involve that expansion's areas.

And then there are the structures present in several core game areas that are particularly relevant to the Zilart and CoP stories.

In case anyone hasn't seen this:

This wrapper is amazing. It's easy to set up, just make sure you use the latest work-in-progress dgVoodoo build. Some of the effects don't look right on PC anymore- you can see this with lighting and spell effects or weaponskills. This fixes those and allows muxless laptop switchable graphics to accelerate FFXI. I'm getting a smoother framerate as well, and I didn't have Optimus issues.

I tried messing with this a little and it wasn't working for me. I'll try it again when I get home from work and report back here.

I'm enjoying being on Asura. There are tons more players than Sylph, including new players. And pricing on the AH is far better. A few crafters inflated prices on Sylph, lol.

What problem were you having with it? If you are using Windower, the dll needs to be in the POL folder. If not, it needs to be in the FFXI folder.

I put the dll in the pol folder, but didn't extract the config utility. I extracted it to the pol folder as well and configured it. After that it worked, but I had to disable hardware mouse in widower in order to see the mouse cursor.

I ended up disabling dgvoodoo. It seemed to cause some slowdown issues with the menus and stuff, and it broke Windower's screenshot functionality.

So I've managed to get as far as Promathia - When Angels Fall, but I can't seem to survive. I managed to get two out of four down, but at that point Yoran Oran was out of MP. Which seems to be the wall I hit every time. Various websites say that the fight is totally doable at level 80 with Trust NPCs, but that doesn't seem to account for the fact that they're often silenced with no way of curing themselves. The fight is basically over if that happens. If not that, then they waste all their NPC on curing status effects. I might have to get up to level 90 or so just to give the Trust NPCs more MP ...

What class are you? I'm doing a fresh playthrough and I got 99 before doing anything mission-wise that I didn't have to (easier to get rank 6/do limit break for lvl 65 concurrently). I'd get 99 first. At that point in RoE gear missions are a cakewalk except RoV and the end of Adoulin maybe.

I'm a Samurai.

I didn't want the entire game to be a cakewalk, but I don't have much control over the flow of battles playing solo and using Trust NPCs.

Level to 99 and then do the stories. There is a point is not a cakewalk

Some Trust NPCs like Apururu (IIRC) tend to stay out of range so they can avoid silence or you could go /WHM and Silena them.

But as Gromph said, you may as well wait and hit 90+.

I'm nearing the end of Promathia and plan to post an update when I do, but I'm wondering about where to go from here. If i want to take up the dancer subjob, that means starting the Wings of the Goddess expansion before or concurrently with Aht Urughan. But if i wait do things in proper order, Aht Urughan seems quite lengthy. It didn't feel too weird to go back and forth between Promathia and a Zilart, but I'm not sure about how to address the next two expansions. I even considered finishing Wings before Aht Urughan.

What server are you on? If you're on Sylph, I'd be happy to help you out.

I'm on Odin, but I managed to beat them! Thank you for offering. :)

Wings of the Goddess takes place in the past, and doesn't really have any connection to Aht Urhgan that I can think of, so it probably won't make any difference if you do wings first, or concurrently with Treasures.

The rewards for Wings of the Goddess may be better. It depends on what your focus is. Aht Urghan gets you the ability to enter Salvage for farming alexandrite for gil. WotG lets you get a Moonshade earring, which remains a nice piece for weaponskill damage. ToAU was shorter to complete but I thought the WotG story was more engaging.

I'd do WotG personally first.

To get the dancer job at most you have to be able to reach the past version of Jugner forest IIRC, maybe Grauberg and Bastok if you're doing the artifact quests for the job as well, no real need to advance in the WotG missions to do that.

A lot of mission lines can be done in parallel, and on some level it may help to tackle them by release order, but tends to be mostly for the sake of recognizing elements of older stories referenced in newer ones (although there are occasions where hints at future stories happen in older ones, like how Odin and Alexander, introduced in ToAU, come up in CoP, although not directly named).
In that light, WotG, especially its nation-specific paths, may be best enjoyed after the present nation missions, especially when it comes in Windurst.

Nearly 15 years after trading in my first moat carp, I'm now the proud owner of a Lu Shang's fishing rod. The testimonial key item you get for completing that quest is the best.

I played in windowed mode. My friend let me use his account and I'd fish with 2 accounts at the same time. Cast line, alt tab, cast line, alt tab, catch fish, etc. Fuck, how many hours.

Lmao. I had a few friends that were determined to get that thing, but they never made it. That's great though. Reminds me of the literal
turd
you get from collecting all the seeds in the latest Zelda game.

Almost done Lu Shang's +1. The wiki is a little confusing though, it said you're required to reel in 60 different fish before the Fishing Tenacity RoE is unlocked. I know for a fact I have between 40 and 50 unique fish caught, but it unlocked the RoE anyways. Only need the Reel Endurance 8 to finish off Fishing (Tenacity).

Just been riding my chocobo outside hammerhead in FFXV with sarutabatura playing. Brings back memories (of this year...)

And FFXI Mobile is currently probably vaporware. Although the developer was hiring people for it about a year ago, so maybe not.

I think it's 50/50 as to whether it's been silently cancelled.

I really wish FFXIV was anything like XI, XI is my favourite game of all time even though I haven't played it (for more than an odd month here and there) in years. Tried to recapture the magic on PS4 several times with XIV but I just plain hate the direction they've gone with combat. Too bad since I love the world they made for it.

XI was about perfect timing and coordination of a few abilities, while XIV is just about memorizing and repeating a way too long rotation. I can't stand it.

...god dammit... I'm going to resub again tonight... It always only lasts a week but it's a good week. Wish my old server was still around.

Asura seems to have the largest English-speaking population. It's where the reddit linkshell is. I'm playing on Sylph again (originally Fairy, before the merge) and have a pretty active LS there, but the server population seems pretty low.

Just booted this up for the first time in over a year to check my playtime for another thread. First time playing it on my 4K TV. It's almost unplayable due to how tiny the UI is. The UI was the perfect size when I was playing in 720p, but now it's a postage stamp on my 60".

Also there's no sound of any kind. Even the Play Online launcher doesn't have sound. The sound worked fine last time I played and the only thing that's changed is my TV.

Holy crap the walking speed. When did this happen? I only walked around for a bit before logging back out, but it felt like I was at least twice as fast.

Well, there are a few connections. Zazarg, one of the Serpent Generals in Aht Urhgan, was in Bastok's military during the Crystal War. He mentions this in Aht Urhgan, and is present in Bastok in Wings of the Goddess.

Unicorn was my server back in the day, just looked it up and guess that means they put me on Fenrir.

If you use windower, there's a UI scaling option that should help. I'm not sure when they adjusted the movement speed, but I think I read somewhere it's a 25% boost to the base movement speed.

you can do it without windower now. There is a UI resolution in the games options. Set it to 900p or so.

If FFXIV blows, how does it compare to unplayable trash like FFXI? Can't even download the thing, it's a fucking nightmare rofl.
FFXIV is worse than unplayable. Playing it is negative benefit.
