FFXI in 2017

I loved being able to change gear on the fly. It made gear that would be seen as inferior into gear that you can make very good use out of depending on the situation, and abilities you use. The problem people have with it is most likely the blinking target. It could be hard to cure them, or whatever.

Gear swapping is deeply ingrained into FFXI at this point, and you could make a safe argument that basically all relevant content is tuned with the expectation for it. SE themselves added the ability to macro entire sets of gear in at once a couple years ago, but obviously it's still behind third-party stuff, which will do it automatically based on rules you define and faster than a macro could hope to do.

Additionally, the blinking is mostly a non-issue now, thanks to lockstyle. When someone has used that to lock their appearance, they don't blink when changing gear, unless they change a weapon. Again, nothing new for third-party users (and the weapon isn't even an issue here), but it's something far more reliable and less-stigmatized than it once would have been.

You had macros for it so you didnt even notice. It was activating a skill and the macro would swap the gear for you automatically.

I get that it's not hard to do, but it just seems so silly to me.

Does "lockstyle" mean that I can appear as if I haven't changed my outfit?

Correct, your appearance stays fixed at whatever you set using lockstyle.
Oh nice, the game had so many great looking gear you simply didn't wear.

God I really need to convince some friends to come back to the game with me, at least to finish the storylines.

Not in contact with anyone from back then, which is a bit sad, but that's life I suppose. ThoseGuys represent.

Hey ! I used to be a TG member as well. Played a lot less at some point to do other stuff, and slowly didn't feel the motivation to go back. Then (maybe 1 year later), credit card expired and sealed the deal for me.
TG is one of my greatest gamer experience, regarding team work and dedication and fun. Great linkshell.

Regarding the game itself, and looking at the past, I think all of us, FFXI players were masochist. ;)

Lockstyle is simply amazing, gawd I loved playing dress up in FFXI and with that I could actually do it while still wearing my 'proper' gear. Entire inventories just for costumes lol.

One of the many amazing quality of life improvements they added in the later game that you wondered how you ever lived without but did for many many many years lol.

For all this talk of vertical progression, I have to say that current end game areas (the Escha zones) have really gotten it right. There's fantastic loot across all three zones and the majority can be augmented repeatedly for more sweet boosts.

For me I gradually moved away from it both due to real life commitments and a newfound addiction to the early days of WoW. I pretty much played from initial NA release in 2003 through to halfway into 2005.

Wow, I just found where my old HNMLS forum was revived at. It lives, now to collect everything before it disappear again. Sefadin (he just goes by ItsSeflol on the forums, the dude that used to wear subligar a lot in TG) was there a lot, for any TG members that were friends with him. Maybe he has that form bookmarked and still checks and chats on it.

The Fairy (Eden, TG Sefadin) confessions thread, bleh stuff, some people talked about using cheats to move around. http://eden.gley.net/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=4848

Sefadin said:
Oh yeah, I figured out how to pop Almighty Apkallu when the entire FFXI universe was trying to figure it out but never got a drop off it so I never said anything.
That's right, 500k people and I was the only one who knew how to pop it.

Is there a way for me to see if my characters are still available if I resub to PlayOnline? I don't want to if my Main and mules are gone.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
Wish we'd get an update on if that mobile variant is really coming and if so will it come out in the West.

I decided to make some headway with the Chains of Promathia expansion. Two steps forward, one step back. And a bit of exp loss.

I attempted to take on a bit too much in the beginning.

Making an inquiry at the infirmary in Jeuno granted me a strange amulet and a mysterious vision to go with it. A ghost-like boy escaped from the infirmary and the knights of Jeuno chased after him only for him to vanish in thin air.

The game gave me some very vague instructions and told me to check the archduke's manor for "details." Those "details" were apparently some NPC muttering something about emptiness. But the game had already told me to visit the crags and after checking with the internet, sure enough, that's what I was supposed to do. I decided to make my way for the most familiar one - the Crag of Dem.

Inspecting the broken telepoint crystal teleported me to a strange apparatus of what I'm assuming is some long lost civilization. As some cloaked men tried to escape and got sucked back into the "emptiness," I made my way inside and was transported to a dark realm.

In this realm I fought all sorts of bizarre enemies around my level and avoided those the game told me were "very, very strong." They could have easily found their way into a Dark Souls game.

Eventually I found my way to a web-like doorway, leading to a boss fight. As soon as the fight started Kupipi seemed to mysteirously lose all of her MP. Unable to heal, I got the boss down to about 20% of its health as it killed off each one of my trust NPCs one by one. But alas, I did not succeed. I guess I should have bought some ethers and maybe a hi potion or two. My Japanese linkshell's advice was to get better Trust NPCs, but apparently at level 30 it's a bit "tough."

Geeze. I remember doing the Promyvian areas by myself. This was before Trusts and the ilvl gear was introduced, but after level 90+ enemies were added all over the place. Just my Monk self with my Mantis (one step below Empy weapon) vanilla Empy gear, and mediocre accessories. Aggroing any of those level 90 enemies meant certain death and a long trek back. Managed to finish and get the maps for all 3 areas. I was proud of getting every area map in the game. Apparently you can just buy them all now. Kinda ruins it.

Sneaking through zones like that was so fun.

And you managed to beat the bosses solo even with the level 30 restriction?

You can get the best healer in game by joining Apururu's Unity Concord
https://www.bg-wiki.com/bg/Category:Unity_Concord
Just do a few unity quests under "records of eminence" and she will become selectable from your list the next day.

Also through records of eminence
You can start a chain of quests that give you some really good trusts
Do "Call Forth an Alter Ego" under "Basic"
And do all the follow up quests that follows
You can get a good tank Valaineral, DPS Tenzen, and bard Joachim from them

The restriction was already removed. This was after Abyssea had been out for a while, but before Seekers of Adoulin. Around 2012 sometime I think. Google tells me the restrictions were removed in 2010. Needless to say, even with my mediocre gear, a level 30 boss didn't exactly pose much of a threat.

I don't have any of this "Records of Eminence" stuff unlocked, but it looks like it was hidden away in menus? Or am I locked out of it due to not having later expansions?

The dungeon wasn't restricted, but upon entering the boss fight I was. It wasn't too bad, but I had no means of healing. I'm pretty sure it could take out around 1/5th of my HP with one hit.

It should be under the quest section of the menu and you don't need all the expansions
Just do this quest to unlock the feature
https://www.bg-wiki.com/bg/Records_of_Eminence_(Quest))

Do this ASAP
You can earn points (sparks) that can be traded in for gear
Extra XP
As well as trusts I mentioned
And other rewards

Here is the list for all the records of eminence quests and rewards

Quest-->Record of Eminence.

You should also talk to the Unity and RoE NPCs in towns (In Sandy, they are in South Sandy's west exit.). RoE will allow you to get free gears to level up to level 99. You can also make some nice Gil by reselling Acheron Shields.

You should really learn what RoE is because it is your bread and butter nowadays:

https://www.bg-wiki.com/bg/Category:Records_of_Eminence

Another general tip: Touch every Book ("Survival guide") you run into. They usually are near every outpost, but not always. You can warp between books.

Personally, I would wait to do CoP and do Rank missions and ZM first. It's also the story's "canon" order. CoP are no longer capped (I am sure because I re-did all story missions when I came back). But I suggest you level up to level 99 first.

Also: Summer Alter Ego Extravaganza is on, meaning you can get these trusts in the game right now:
Tenzen
Mihli Aliapoh
Valaineral
Joachim
Noillurie
Elivira
Lha Mhakaracca
Ferreous Coffin
Gilgamesh
Kukki-Chebukki
Margret
Leonoyne
Maximilian
Kayeel-Payeel

(With login points? I don't remember. Some active player can help you better with this, probably)

It took me maybe 30 minutes from starting RoE to get a full set of 117 gear. It changed everything. I was able to solo all CoP, ToAU and WotG Missions other than the escort ones that make you protect an NPC. I even got through most of SoA with it (with Trusts this time). Only needed help with the final bosses of Crystaline Prophecy (could probably solo with Trusts), Seekers, and Rhapsodies. The worst part was actually the high evasion of the regular mobs in Reisenjima. Even after upgrading to 119 gear, I still could barely touch them.

The dungeon wasn't restricted, but upon entering the boss fight I was. It wasn't too bad, but I had no means of healing. I'm pretty sure it could take out around 1/5th of my HP with one hit.

Huh. Weird. I definitely was never level restricted for any main story related content I played through. The only level restricted content I ever encountered at all was some cave in LaTheine, and I noped right out of there cause I couldn't wear any of my gear.

I know at some point they added gear scaling so that wasn't a problem anymore. Maybe they added level restrictions back in with the introduction of that and Trusts.

Just jumped back in last Wednesday, already at level 50. Quality of life improvements are STAGGERING.

I've been seeing a lot of hate fore Abyssea (sic), what's that all about? I quit playing before it dropped and haven't gotten that far yet with my new character.

There's lv. 90 enemies in Promyvion now? shit lol

Look under "requirements" of this page for step by step instructions
https://www.bg-wiki.com/bg/Category:Unity_Concord

You need to complete 10 records of eminence first
Look under the daily quests if you need to find more to do

Thanks. It appeared after I completed a few and thought it was because I changed screens or something.

Now I'm leveling what feels like crazy fast. Both A.M.A.N. and eminence are giving me EXP and suddenly I jumped from 34 to 36 in the blink of an eye.

High-level mobs in areas that used to have a much lower average, like the Promyvion example you mention, were an attempt by the devs to enable levelling past the 75 level cap for people who didn't get Abyssea.
Yet another thing for them to reconsider if they ever make a single-player remake that covers all the expansion content...

Anyway, a lot of the Abyssea hate that does exist seems to have to do with a lot of older gear and accomplishments getting steamrolled by the kind of stuff one could get and accomplish in Abyssea in a relatively short amount of time.

Since I never bothered much with endgame stuff, I liked what it brought to the table - not only was levelling faster when people figured out how lights worked, the same NM could help several different people accomplish completely different goals at once - some could join for a regular gear drop, others for seals, other for some key item, others for a story quest, other for EXP and/or cruour, etc... It was IMO a healthy approach, since it encouraged people to help in fights and to invite others, especially due to the proc system that encouraged a variety of jobs.

Yeah they are great
For even more free exp, check the records of eminence page for the schedule of "gain experience" quest
For 4 hours, every 5000xp you gain, you will get 1500 more XP as reward

And don't forget to trade in your sparks for upgraded gear!

The gear is so cheap I feel like I'm cheating by buying anything. I'm not sure how I feel about the massive jump in pace; I've been enjoying taking things in.

Ah, figured it might be gear related.

I've noticed that the auction house seems to be pretty much dead now, at least where gear is concerned. Granted, with the ability to get gear w/eminence points and Trust NPCs meaning you don't really need to keep geared up I can see why, but it's kind of sad.

So despite my earlier trepidation I really want to try again. I saw earlier someone said you can use the adventure guides as warp points in mines and such. Let's say I am in Bastok and want to warp to some mines in the North I visited previously. Any tips? Under level 20 just FYI.

I know how to warp to home points but the books are different I thought.

Edit: Disregard. I found the info in the BG FFXI. Dumb question.

It works similar to the homepoints, just a separate system. You need to hit the Survival Guides once, and then you can warp between them for a small amount of gil or tabs.

On thing I've noticed is there seems to be a world shout now? Like I see people shouting for pt members with their location next to the name. What's the text command for that?

Two questions.

Someone said some about a mobile version launching? Can I get detail on this?

Also is XI free since it will be closing soon?

No, it's not free, but there's a discount campaign. I fucked up and bought the wrong one so I didn't get to take advantage of it, but the first month's subscription was free regardless. There's no sign of it being closed within the coming year or anything like that. They're still doing campaigns and providing updates that seem to be made with some longevity in mind - for example, rebalancing the monk class.

No news on mobile, maybe it's dead.

You're probably seeing /yell commands.
They're not server-wide, but they do go to all city zones.

Generally speaking, Abyssea made the game a lot more accessible and opened a lot more options for players of the game to enjoy it. Better gear for all jobs became available, it better encouraged participation, and folks that weren't running with endgame shells could get stuff either in small groups or even solo later on as Loona points out.

Some of the hate comes from gear becoming obsolete but a lot of the sentiment is that the game became easy mode or moved away from being community focused. The game being defined by the grind in the 75-cap days and the relatively narrow band of great gear had a huge effect on perception as a whole.

I played since English launch on PC and Abyssea is my most fav time of the game by far. Had the most fun in those zones as a LS initially and then dominating as a core low man group of friends when the game got quieter.

<3 Abyssea.

Ah, I see.

Reading up on all the new stuff makes me regret ever having left. Hope I can get at least one job mastered before the end.

It does not, but if the unity ranking you're looking at is the one under "Unity Info" and "Ranking Info", that's not your personal ranking, that's the unity as a whole. You contribute to that, but it's the unity's ranking relative to all of the others.

This thread prompted me to add the game to my Steam wishlist. I got a notification that it's on sale now for $9.99 CAD. I hope I can find my security token.

If all goes well, I'll see you Fairy/Sylph folks in a day or two.
Bought !

Was able to convince my brother to come back with me so we can finaly do all the storyline we never finished. We don't even care much for the increased xp, Trust are really the convincing argument for coming back.

Spent an hour and a half running around Zvahl this morning looking for the coffer and found it just before I absolutely had to leave lol
