UK: The Evil Within 2 sells 75% less than first game (physically) at launch

Everyone is quick to yell "marketing!" as the reason it's not selling well, but no one is talking about the lack of review copies. Maybe it's as simple as no one is willing to take a $60 dive after the shitshow that the first game was until they see some reviews.

I'd argue that's part of marketing, though

PS by who's definition is the first game a shitshow

I didn't like the first one that much but from what I've seen of the sequel it looks pretty good but I just have too much to play at the moment. I'll wait and pick it up when it goes down in prices and gets a pro/x patch.

I was all in on this until I read that it was open world and the final nail was the lack of pro support.
It's not open world, a few chapters just have large areas with side objectives

it's getting pro support in a patch down the line.

why skip a great game in the first place just because it doesn't take advantage of your fancy gadget

Tobehonest, im not just in the mood for an horror game (or RPG for that matter) what i would like now is another awesome action game like Bayonetta, DOOM or GOW. i feel like that part of the genre has been covered by RE7/REV2/EW1

Atill bought EW2 im just not hyped to play it.

No hype for Xenoblade 2 either :(

Not suprised, just like I said in the mordor thread. Bigger, better and more competition than the originals release.

Because it's unacceptable when it's been out over a year.

If this was happening a year ago I would let it slide but it's disrespectful to customers especially when it isn't the first time Bethesda have done it and when they did add it to prey it made it worse.

Thanks for the update about the open world bit. The review I read described it as a bland open world.

There's more factors than simply marketing:
- The first one wasn't exceptional
- The sequel seems similar so why bother
- The franchise doesn't differentiate itself enough from Resident Evil. The gameplay is very similar.
- The setting is gross. Silent Hill is falling by the way side as well. This genre is becoming niche.
- It looks like a 360 game at first glance (EDIT: in 1080p).

RE7 has a carefully designed map, in which every enemy-, item- and puzzle placement feels thoroughly planned out. TEW2's map feels like I'm playing any Ubisoft open world game. It's just some slightly bigger space with arbitrary loot and enemies in it, while I'm running from minimap icon to minimap icon. I mean, I definitely wanted exploration compared to TEW1, which was underwhelming for different reasons. But they chose the most shallow way of achieving that.

If you are just running from icon to next icon it sounds like you don't even care for the exploration. Like I never felt like I was just checking boxes out of the map but rather check what every location contains. Have found easter eggs and ton of resources that way.

You're right, It's not as good as the first game...

It's 10xs better in every single way.

TEW2 is such a massive improvement on every facet of the bumbling mishandling of the first game.

Except for combat, artstyle, upgrade system and story (so far atleast).

It's impressive how you manage to boil it down to a bunch of bullet points and they are quite literally all objectively wrong (except the first one which is just, like, your opinion man)

Because I paid for it for that exact fucking reason?

Uh, yes? Sony should make it mandatory since they decided to release an iterative console.

The problem with "mandatory" here is that you can't make the rules. Someone could basically up the shadow resolution and that would already qualify it as "superior". Imo this should be voluntary but not doing a good one should always be made an example of (voting with your wallet).

Anyone using their noodle will realise its because the general public are cottoning on to the fact these games drop in price FAST. Why would anyone other than a serious fan buy this at full price when it is guaranteed to be a LOT cheaper within 2 months. Yeah yeah support the dev blah blah but most sane people support themselves and save money wherever possible, which is why this and probably several other big releases lately have suffered.

Yes they can, they are the platform holder. 4K native or checkerboarding. No excuses since their other games were patched for it and this will be as well but we don't know when, presumably when the One X is out. Why the fuck would I want to buy a game for my pro if its not pro enhanced? I was going to double dip and buy for PC and PS4, that's two lost sales right there.

Yup, especially with Black Friday and Cyber Monday coming very soon.

I guess in part of the problem.

Used to buy all games day 1 even ifI was only moderately interested, now it's better to just focus on one game and get the ones I'm not desperate to play d1 for a massive discount a couple months later.

Plus it's October, there are dozens of games coming out and there are fling to be good sales heading into Xmas.

This looks like a 360 post

in sub hd

Not releasing it in PS4 pro probably didn't help either..

I played it on PC and am still waiting for a X.B.O.X. confirmation and then I will buy it on Xbox..

Anyways. This is why we don't deserve good things.. in the same month, Blade Runner and now Evil Within 2 bomb. :-(

Lack of marketing will do that... Hopefully it has decent legs. I think the chance of another game in the series is extremely improbable but I've thought that since TEW2 was announced. I don't see this being a long-lasting franchise.

this feels like Bayonetta where fans should be happy that they even got a sequel in the first place.

Just because it's a miracle something exists doesn't mean we shouldn't be disappointed if it flops. It's very possible for a longshot game to end up doing well, look at NieR: Automata earlier this year.

That being said, these are about the numbers I was expecting for this game, if I'm being honest. It's Prey all over again.

I can't help but feel AAA Single player games are on their way out. This would be Bethesda's 3rd big single player game in a row to bomb.

I don't think the takeaway here should be that AAA single-player is on its way out. The takeaway is that Bethesda's review policy is absurd and counterproductive.

One could argue it's simply not an interesting game either.

I get the impression that horror games are a tough sell in the market anyways. Alien Isolation received plenty of fanfare, and yet even its sales were disappointing from SEGA's perspective.

I bought TEW1 on launch and then it went on sale for half-price less than a month later. Really burned me even though I enjoyed the game. I will buy TEW2, just not until Black Friday.

0 marketing + packed month.

Bethesda/Zenimax must knew this was gonna happen or else they need to get their shit together.

I saw a lot of marketing for the game in my shop during the last two months.

There were no reviews out one day before the release date. The review embargo should have been lifted on Tuesday. It got a better Metacritic score than its predecessor (78 vs. 75).

I guess Bethesda spent this quarter's entire marketing budget on Wolfenstein.

Bad mistake if you compete against Call of Duty WWII and Star Wars: Battlefront II. It will share the same fate like Titanfall 2 last year.

I hope no one expected more. This sounds about what I expected it to sell.

I was. I'm really enjoying TEW2 and I was hoping this game would sell well so we could see more third person survival horror games.

Honestly this as depressing as seeing Blade Runner 2049 doing terrible at box office.

It's seems like none of Bethesda's recent games have had any marketing besides Wolfenstein. I don't even know what genre The Evil Within is.

Its third person survival horror. I think its pretty obvious.

I played the first one. I love Shinji Mikami. His post seems right. I've now watched the first 40 minutes of EW2 on Youtube and, based purely on that, nothing about it seemed all that different to the first game. Of course I wouldn't know how it plays, because there wasn't any gameplay in that 40 minutes. You might say I'm wrong on this. That EW2 is fantastic, fixes all the problems with the first game. But the point is that nothing I've been shown suggests that EW2 is this wonderful experience. Where you're coming off a niche, arguably weak first game you need to wow people for the second. Starting your game with a boring as hell 40 minute sequence when your entire strategy relies on people being enticed by streamers playing that segment is just plain dumb.

So instead of shitting on my post for no reason (Where did I say the game was bad and was hating on it?) and not contributing to the discussion, what's your reasons for that 75% drop?
Have some perspective. When you get dogpiled for a post, maybe it was a shitty post.

Xbox 360 games *were* HD. The Evil Within 2 is doing things far beyond what the 360 could do, both in techniques and in complexity. 'Looks like a 360 game in HD' is woefully wrong, and the 'in HD' part is completely meaningless. I condemn you to only play games that actually look like 360 games.

I haven't even bought the game, but I've seen enough footage (of the console versions too) to know that trying to pull 'that's just my opinion man' on a statement like 'Looks like an Xbox 360 game in HD' is you not being willing to own up to your own bullshit.

Just remembered that the original released on PS3/PS4/360/XB1 and PC.

By releasing on a much smaller market, they've cut down on the amount of possible sales.

I disagree, Arkham City in 1080p (Edited my post again to be more precise) with higher res textures would look just as good IMO.
But graphics weren't my main point anyway.
The point is it doesn't look like a brand new gameplay/visual experience never seen on 360 or in the previous entry.

?

PS3/360 were already dead by then and both consoles (PS4 especially) have sold millions since then.
