Gran Turismo Sport - Review Thread

13 for OpenCritic @ 76. It is a good thing that they are taking their time, but I have to wonder why PD and Sony took so long to open the servers for a proper early review. They had 4 years.

I'd imagine that Sport mode requires a substantial number of players to operate normally.

I can understand why the aggregate is where it is. I would personally put it higher, but not by a large amount. It's a solid 8.5 for me. A 10 in terms of polish, presentation, feel, and elegance. Barely a 7 in terms of actual content (I can't help but feel disappointed with the car selection), especially when stacked up against the rest of the series. Slapping "Sport" on the title doesn't change that IMO.

Because a Gran Turismo game after a 4 year (felt "more than 4 years" because GT6 was out on PS3 after the enthusiast had moved to PS4 already) break has proven to be able to attract over 10 million people. But there are not 10 million people who care about racing online and learning the tracks to be competetive and also confident enough in their skill to not bump into people and lower their sportsmanship rating over and over.

I mean look at Jeff Gerstmann and Drew and Alex drive racing games. They'd suck at GTS online and they wouldn't want to spend the time to get good at it. And it's representative of many racing game players. If you're only attractive to the more serious motorsport gamers, you'll be looking at sales numbers of Project CARS 1, not sales numbers of GT5 (and certainly not GT3).

I think you're making a pretty big assumption in regards to how big the potential audience is here. Ultimately this is something new, a console racing game where the online actually works. We don't know how many people are looking for that yet, it's early days, and Gran Turismo Sport may grow a new audience for itself in much the same way that Gran Turismo did two decades ago.

I hope this game turns into a Splatoon rather than a SFV, but I guess time will tell.

I am enjoying the weirdness of it so far.

I personally think the game is amazing but the reviews aren't out of line or anything. As long as you're taking into account what a large gaming audience is going to like, I think it's hard to argue that this game wouldn't fall into the love-it-or-hate-it category. So amid 7 or something like that sounds reasonable.

so GTS has a feature that nobody else has but thats a minus for GTS only, not for those games that dont have it? yeah :)
Not only that, but GTS has rally too. Sardegna is a great track to race when you get a hang of rally, not that veteran GT'ers would need to, as the rally is vintage GT...Can't wait for the snow flips...

Reviewers need to give sport mode it's props too...The servers hold pretty well, the system in place works and online racing is smooth as butter a la "lag" etc....Yes, it toook 4 years, but it's working as intended and it's working well,..

I feel like the game is marketed towards the Iracing type of fan, not a casual sim fan that stuck with GT all years, even with the inconsistencies of GT5/6. I would love the polish/visual consistency of this game combined with the content and customizability of the experience of the older games.

I'm just a bit sad that I feel left out of a franchise that I've followed since I was 11.

Gran Turismo is a big franchise that Sony invests a lot of time and money into that typically appeals to a broad audience and sells 10+ million copies.

So, trying to pivot the focus of GT to something that's likely to appeal to a much smaller specific niche seems like an odd direction that's going to leave a lot of fans of the older entries out in the cold.

Because a Gran Turismo game after a 4 year (felt "more than 4 years" because GT6 was out on PS3 after the enthusiast had moved to PS4 already) break has proven to be able to attract over 10 million people. So whats more important? What PD wants to do with GT, or what a group of gamers want?

This is a pretty good way of looking at it. I, personally, am pretty excited to get more into GT Sport, but I fully understand that it isn't everyone's cup of tea, and the current Metascore kinda reflects that.

Hmm that was surprising, GR Sweden, from the preview it sounded like Petter would give GTS a higher score. Sounds like he still loved the game but it fell short on some things. He's known to be hard to please though.
His closing comment that PC2 is the king this fall, couldn't agree more! Forza is the best complete package but PC2 is the king when it comes to the actual driving.

I like all the history/timeline bits in the manufacturer sections. Pretty interesting stuff that adds to the overall texture/intent of the game. Gotta admit I felt like I was experiencing something special watching the game's intro. Everything in GTS feels ultra-premium, like this is something I would expect to see in a museum, not on my console at home, which is a neat realization. Whether that resonates w/ reviewers/players is definitely a YMMV thing.

Sport mode sounds like a lot of fun, but the minimal content at launch is scaring me. Probably going to go with Project Cars 2 since there's just so many more tracks and cars.

You honestly can’t go wrong with any of them. All three games have something to offer that the other doesn’t.

GamingTrend - 10/10
After a long wait, Gran Turismo Sport is here, and it is racing perfection beyond measure. This is the best racing game that I have ever played, overflowing in beauty, grace, playability, and precision. Driving a go-kart, a fusion-engine concept race car, or a standard Ford Focus all provide a wealth of fun and unique challenges. Gran Turismo Sport is a triumph, and will be played voraciously by racing fans for years and years to come.

Opencritic jumped 2 points up.

Just wanted to chime in a say that I am enjoying the game a lot more. I think that I will go back to my old self and not pay attention to reviews. I feel that they have the tendency to create a false sense of failure if the score is not within the range of said expectations. But I do think a healthy discussion is good for development feedback.

This review is pretty hard to read. Like, the game is good, but...

Now, Polyphony has pulled the protective covers off their latest vision, and the pièce de résistance that is Gran Turismo Sport is truly a sight to behold, cherish, and revere. A symphony of speed and precision, Gran Turismo Sport is a game that will be played long after the PlayStation 4 has met its demise.

Really?

Reviews should have waited for actual launch. Still suspect online servers to buckle under the load and be faced with a Battlefield 4 sized disaster.

I'm loving this game, this is one I will be playing for years to come. My mate got the game and does not PS+ so if this game is being played without online, there really is no point. It's a game that for me is a 9/10 already, but without online it would be 2/10. A tad bit fucked that the game has gone a completely different direction than previous GT titles and this sea of change and expectation, is why the game is getting such low scores.

Overwatch for example is a game which is useless without online but had no baggage so got a high score on it's merit, Sport is getting and will continue getting fucked because it's not following past formulas.

Saddly that can be applied to most of the early reviews.

Glad someone exposed them out on their joke of a review, which is blatantly fishing for views and controversy. The thing sounded more like an advertisement for Forza 7 then a GTS review.

Polygon gave GT6 a 9. Wonder if they’ll love GTS as much?

If GT3 launched in today’s critical environment even with all the same circumstances(no competition, etc) I doubt it would get an 85 even. No way it would get a 95 at all.

Would have stopped reading right there, if it wasn't placed at the very end of the review... Same level of bullshit as the ""Doesnt look great" one.

Funny how if you call out a bad review that’s low people jump down your throat defending the review but it never works the other way around. Maybe they just didn’t find faults? I don’t agree it has no faults but I can at least see why someone wouldn’t.

Not sure why there is a swell of angst at the review scores..

It's still quite a focused (even if beautiful) game, and I think the score is pretty fair.. no matter how elevated the graphics, it still feels far more limited to me than some of it's rivals, but I think what they have done is excellent.. so 9.5/10 for what they did, but I'd mark it down overall for being too narrow..

Loving the scapes, and would love to try the VR although I suspect that being lower res than the Occulus, since i found that a bit too pixellated to the point of distraction, maybe I need to wait a bit before jumping in, although I will say the immersion is on another planet..

BleacherReport review
Gran Turismo Sport takes itself seriously—something in of itself that is a big risk in the video-game realm.

But the payoff is a finely tuned racing experience few others can hope to rival. Sheer numbers like the car and track lists being smaller in this game gets quickly lost in an immersive experience as close to the real thing as gamers will find on the market.

As a whole, GTS is the most focused racing offering in years. It knows what it wants to accomplish and does it better than anyone. If the game keeps receiving updates throughout its life cycle to expand the universe in meaningful ways, it won't have a hard time solidifying itself as the best entry in this series since the third and the racer with the most staying power on the market.

You have to take the good with the bad. A bad score is just a good/valid as a good score.
