Is PC a choice for you OP? That is the best option right now.

Otherwise, get the PS3 version. No idea if they even have plans to port Dark Souls to current gen consoles.

Blighttown runs at an average 10 FPS on consoles or something. The console versions are borderline unplayable by today's standards but I'm not sure if we can expect a remake anytime soon. Everybody and their mother played the game already and the PC version with DSfix is excellent. If PC is an option, go for that.

I don't think Fromsoft themselves have any interest in ports so I wouldn't bet on any port or remaster any time soon. In which case you might as well play it now.

Fromsoft has, of the top of my head, never done an updated version of their games to a newer platform except for the updated version of DS2. And basically the only thing they did there was juggle a few enemy / item locations. They're just more interested in making new things than redoing old stuff.

Play on PC if you can. Otherwise just dive in.

Play it now on PC. Chances of that or Demon Souls getting remake/rerelease on PS4 are very slim, I wouldn't count on those chances and just find a way to play them so you don't miss out on some amazing games

Also as someone who has played both pc and ps3 versions to completion, ps3 is still very playable, just know that there are a few areas where the framerate os incredibly bad

1.0 US PS3 release of Dark Souls 1 is still my preferred version of the game, they patched out a lot of the fun and immersive aspects of the difficulty. And eventually they implemented a patch that added more input lag, which bothers me more than the blighttown framerate ever did.

Should you play an amazing game now or wait for something that has not and will not be announced?

Hmmmm. Lemme get back to you.

Play it now, while the userbase is still active. Echoing what others say there's no guarantee of a remastering, even if it does sound like an obvious idea.

I was just wondering about this myself. Why isn't there a PS4/X1 remaster of DS1? There's nothing new from FromSoft atm that could conflict with it, and there's a PC port that could easily be ported to current consoles. Does Namco just think there's no demand for it? Is there some other issue that could be preventing them from doing it?

It depends on how well you deal with bad framerates. If you're the kind of guy who considers things below a stable 30 fps to be unplayable, you're going to have a pretty bad time. If you can deal with that, it's one of the best games on the console.

Play it now and play the remaster later when inevitably comes to PS4/One.

The game is amazing in any platform. Dont listen to the "it is unplayable dogshit on consoles!" crowd.

I finished it 4x on PS3 and it is one of my GOATs.

I just don't think anyone with the power to greenlight it or ask for it is particularly interested or sees the need.

If you get the PS3 version, see if you can pick up the Prepare to Die EU physical release. That one has the patches and DLC on-disk and since PS3 is region-free it'll play on an NA system.

I guess, but I mean, there is a pretty good reason to do it, tho. There's no more Dark Souls coming, so a remaster would be the perfect way to fill that gap for folks that want some more Souls. No new Dark Souls games to draw attention away from it either.

Why?. Is something stopping Namco? I don't really get it. It seems like such a no-brainer? :/
If there was going to be a straight port, it would have happened already. Any effort put into a remaster would be better served by a new entry. No one who could do justice to a remaster or a new entry is available. That, and franchises really don't need to continue ad infinitum.

I know it seems like they're leaving money on the table, but that's not how it works.

It still costs money and resources, which they may feel would be wasted on a port of a 5 year old game that just had a sequel and a spin off

I've finished it on PS3 several times myself, but it is a really poor experience, even by PS3 standards. It's sub-hd, has very low-resolution textures everywhere, and runs at 10-15 FPS at times, occasionally for extended periods, and there's also input lag IIrc. It is playable, but it's absolutely a very rough experience, especially if you're used to how current-gen stuff (like DS2 and 3) looks and plays. It's one of the hardest PS3 games for me to go back to now. :(

If you've never played it, and the only way you can is on PS3, play it and enjoy the heck out of it. A lot of people first experienced it on PS3.

No reason to wait, especially for something that we have no reason to believe exists.

Show down is just another skill you need to master.

I understand all of this. I was just under the impression that porting games from PC to PS4/X1 was generally not a difficult task (same architecture and all that). Perhaps it would require more effort than I thought, Idk. Demon's Souls I do understand, because porting anything from PS3 is supposedly nightmarishly difficult, but I had figured Dark Souls would be an easier task. Oh well, I guess there's still the PS3 version to go back to, even if it's kind of a miserable experience. :/

Anyway, OP, yeah, go PS3 if PC isn't an option. Just know what you're getting into there. Perhaps a PS4 version of DS1 isn't coming soon after all.

Buy an Xbox One to play one BC game? really?

Get the PS3 version OP if you don't have a capable PC. Aside form one area it's still good and playable version.

It has horrid framrate issues everywhere, not just Blighttown. That particular area might be the most egregious, but it's most definitely a rough experience throughout, not just in Blighttown (not to mention the overall poor image quality). As for the X1 BC version, it apparently looks/runs no better than the 360 version, and also has a weird Gamma issue and heavy black crush.

Dark Souls probably wont ever be revisited on consoles, as that's up to From and others. You should def wait for Demons though, as im sure Sony will have bluepoint on that as soon as they are done with SOTC. If SOTC of all things can get a flippin remaster with updated graphical assets, a souls game they actually own is a no brainer.
