Nintendo Switch #1 Selling Hardware in September. Nintendo Systems = 2/3 Total sales.

I did question people's confidence in Destiny 2 and Star Wars Battlefront 2 being factors that would help PS4 reach a new peak in worldwide shipments this FY: (Back in May)

Me responding:

You're still right that people didn't expect it to crash that hard and I didn't bother to continue expanding on sequels like Destiny 2 regarding if it was doing anything different to bring in new consumers because the beta hadn't happened yet.

Yeah I wasn't around back then but I had a similar mindset. The software should sell well (well Destiny 2 is a bit iffy but whatever) but how are Battlefront 2, CoD, yet more Madden/FIFA, Destiny 2 going to be system sellers to a significant degree? I just don't see how there's a good amount of Star Wars, sports fan, CoD gamers who haven't got a PlayStation or Xbox by this point.

I don't know if our good fried Phsyco Mantis is still confident in that 'peak year for PS4' prediction. Looks extreeeeemley unlikely to me.

Hey, there's a hot new system surging in the West! Capcom, here's your chance to get better exposure for your IP that you thought were limited by the 3DS!

...Capcom?

To give some perspective:

=> there was 1 Switch model on amazon in september in the top 30, placed at #15.

=> there are 3 Switch models in october, placed at #7, #12 and #21. And that is 8 days before Mario Odyssey...

==> Switch in october will most likely have phenomenal sales.

Hasn't the PS4 been up YOY in NA this year?

Woof. No scratch that I think there's enough here for a woof woof. Nintendo will be ranking the dough in this holiday.

Wow, I'm genuinely surprised. I knew Switch would have a strong month, but I really thought PS4 would claim a slight victory. Damn impressive for Nintendo. They're going to have an incredible holiday season.

wooooooooooooooooooow. outselling ps4 during destiny 2 month is huge.

can't imagine it losing october with mario on the way, and has a legit shot at november and december if they can get enough on shelves. ps4 is probably going to have some crazy ass bundles though, and star wars hype will help drive battlefront 2 sales.

Nice, I fully expect October to be well over 500k for Switch.

Why do that when they can phone in an old SF2 port and Switch owners ate it up?

Hmm i thought Amazon stoped selling Nintendo hardware

Nah it's a handheld first and foremost, it has the same limitation as handhelds.

It's a hybrid first and foremost and the market is treating it as such. $60 software has been accepted by consumers and the most successful video game accessory in NA this year is the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. It's being viewed as a home console just as much as a handheld device.

Hmm i thought Amazon stoped selling Nintendo hardware

This hasn't been true for awhile now.

Wonder what the LTD is at now. The 2m quoted in the source is taken from Nintendo's last quarterly financial briefing, which stated that 1.95m Switches in North America by the end of June.

#1... In the Destiny 2 month.... Hot damn..
I don't know why people are so surprised. Destiny 2 did not exactly wow everyone and sales are split between xbox one, ps4,and pc. Meanwhile the switch is a brand new console with lots of historically huge exclusives. Zelda completely skipped the wii u, so the zelda withdrawals were massive, and people have been clamoring for a mario 64-esque sequel for years. Not only that but strong Playstation sales is just not sustainable at this point. The thing has saturated the market to a point where a decline in sales was inevitable. Individual game sales however is a totally different ball game.

PS4 WW shipments YTD (as of June 30th):

2016: 5.8 mil
2017: 6.2 mil

EDIT: Lot of people in the prediction thread predicted Switch > PS4, myself included.

Last year had two new SKUs along with PSVR driving sales during the holidays. As the other user stated the PS4 would have to reach peak Wii levels of demand in order to best last year noticeably and it has... GT Sport that is totally new as a genuine system seller? And what else?

I just don't see 8/9/10 million shipped PS4s this holiday.

Kind of surprised Mario + Rabbids isn't higher than #7 for the month. It was #1 on the Switch eshop for at least two weeks so maybe it just had a bigger proportion of digital buyers than other Switch games

It's a hybrid, the user chooses what they want it to be.

This is correct, but try convincing him of that.

If the argument is that the Switch's low specs and "limitations" as a home console compared to its peers disqualifies it from that designation, then the SNES Mini (great sales, by the way) is also not a home console.

I dont get why people struggle with this. Its a new type of product for the market. It has the capability to do both. It is not one or the other.

Yeah, I've not got a carry case or screen protector ATM as well as games I prefer to play on the TV and I'm still extensively using my 3DS when I'm on-the-go so I have my system in the dock for a long time now. I imagine that will change soon though and I think that the flexibility is one of the best things about the system and I'm sure there are people who've had the opposite experience with the system to me (A.K.A 100% portable usage), and some people I'm sure get equal parts enjoyment from its portability and docked modes. Why people trying to put everyone in one basket when the system is so obviously designed to be more that one set way of usage? It's silly and pointless.

I feel like this is going to be how the sales will be for the rest of the generation. I am struggling to think of a way Sony (or Microsoft) could actually push back into the hearts and minds of videogamers.

Many people here claim Switch to be the greatest console of all time, and Mario Odyssey isn't even out yet...It seems like Nintendo has crafted the ideal contraption for the modern videogamer. I've never quite witnessed the sheer love for an electronic before.

It's not really a fair comparison, I think. I stand by that Switch is first and foremost a handheld. So it should be compared more to 3DS than Wii U. In the end that doesn't matter much for Nintendo, of course, because one sold unit is a sold unit no matter what we call the system.

Definitely a fair comparison, fam. I see it as a console with handheld flexibility. So let's agree to disagree.

that's a weird thing to be excited about... you got stocks or something

What's weird, is you in my business.

Non Switch owners are starved for a Switch. Nothing to see here.

Damn

Uhhhhh what? Sony is doing just fine. Let's not hyperbolize.
