Gran Turismo Sport - Review Thread

It´s simply not what people wanted.

Given how terribly PD transitioned into the HD era and how messy 5 & 6 were I feel like we still need and want a proper sequel to 3 A-Spec.

This time around they finally seem to have the (HD) graphics and framerate down, but the content is not there.

PD and Kaz are entirely out of touch.

Forza is fine, but no substitute for the game I want.

The best Forza for me was Forza 2 - that´s the one that copied GT 3´s progression most directly. The one where you had to grind every once in a while - to afford parts and win other races.
Where you stuck with a car for long and got a real connection to it.

I hate how modern Forza just auto serves you races that are scaled automatically for the car you are sitting in.

I want to drive the sunday cup over and over again - so I can buy the level 2 turbo charger - so I have a shot in the Nissan cup - so I can win this amazing Skyline GT. (EDIT: MAYBE THAT WAS GT2?)

Fuck man.

GT 3.

Not that strange when they made big changes to the standard formula. Some are loving it, some not so much. PD took a risk with this and while it's mostly paid off, they have taken a bit of a hit for daring to be different.

Although to score as well as it has, shows how good the actual core game holds up, despite the lack of content, compared past games and the competition. As long as PD can add new cars, tracks and new features at regular intervals, then the game will get even better than it already is.

Yep pretty much.

Totally expected since they revealed the game.

This is not the way to treat your biggest franchise Sony.

Actually the disappointment for me goes back to gt5. Slow ass menus, standard cars (what were they thinking?), graphics quality all over the place...

Only one way to redeem yourselves.
A massive campaign patch within a year.
Bring back the map, the crap cars, the tuning, the car wash, the mandatory licence tests, everything! You know the game that used to sell 15 mil copies.
A free upgrade for current owners and package it as gt7 for retail.
Or you can get used to slashing the price a month after release like gt6.

I think the problem is they can't. If they were capable of creating that kind of content within a decent timescale we'd have it already. The lack of content in GTS is not because of the online focus - it's because that's all they could make in the time. The online element would be equally boosted by extra content if it existed.

As someone who owned a 360 last generation and made the switch to the PS4 I was really looking forward to being able to play GT7 on PS4.

The more I think about what they have on offer in this GT sport edition at this moment the more I get the idea that they have released half a game just to release something.

The quality is there but the content is extreme thin. I have no problem with the change to Sport if this version would include at least 25 tracks.

Going from playing the game and being able to see how it is built and that they have already made adjustments without patches I'd say the game is intended to drip feed content in regular intervals. Very much feels like a platform they are going to grow and designed that way rather than its because they couldn't do the other, it feels identical content wise and structurally to nearly all games as a service when they release.

After all the campaign content from the originals could easily be procedurally generated by pulling from the options you get in the arcade mode if that was the focus they wanted to take.

Agreed. Though I understand people having misgivings with the concept of hoping for new (free!) content, nothing PD has done for the last 3 games instills any confidence regarding even content delivery. BUT, I have the game now and really hope they go above and beyond, like Evo did for DC.

Hopefully they will have the after support covered this time, the game is designed that way, so shouldn't be an afterthought this time.

True but if they want GT:S to be successful they need to. The best and most popular GaaS run like clockwork. I have a massive list of things I'd like to see improving the game and none of it has anything to do with the old campaign due to the new approach.

16 reviews later.... Still 76.. welp, looks like i was not wrong when i played the beta. This was not the right path PD. And the worst part this can be the only GT game that the PS4 is going to get.

Understandable reviews for people who like nostalgia. I don't dislike nostalgia, but the state the genre is in today is pretty stale imho. No amount of dmg or effects or rain or time of day will make carpg gt better for me. I think gts is a great fucking direction to take, and I know that PD will continue to perfect it. This is a future I'm a-ok with. I don't need or want another carpg with better graphics. And going by tge numbers of people playing online, I'm glad I'm not alone!

Peace be to you.

Exactly.

NeoMetalix said it perfectly few days ago:

This is so silly. With GT5/6 the fans were complaining it didn’t evolve and was exactly the same as it always was. Many fans were saying GT5 should have only had the 200 premium cars and the standards were not needed, saying they should focus on quality over quantity. Now they’ve done that and people want it to be exactly how it was pretty much. This is why I couldn’t care less about what people say in GT threads..

You really think that stripping down the game, taking out an entire mode, having fewer cars and tracks than ever while keeping the same pricepoint is a natural evolution?

You think PD should be applauded for this skeleton of a GT game?

AT 60$!?

You could also call it a scam.

PD still believes that they exist in a vacuum. If Kaz took his head out of his ass every once in a while he could see that the game he has to offer does not hold up.

Not at this price.

Plus mandatory PS+ sub.

Yeah, no. Tons of people wanted a better GT Mode. If PD made a better GT Mode and people complained about it, then by all means claim that people don’t like change. PD’s response of entirely gutting the career mode and replacing it with challenges is not what they should’ve done in my opinion.

Not liking change =/= not liking things being removed.

What's Good:
  • Looks simply fantastic, especially in 4K HDR
  • Great evolution of Gran Turismo's handling model
  • Well thought out multiplayer matchmaking
  • Tons of tiny details to help your driving
  • Some of the best original GT tracks yet
  • Scapes are truly impressive blends of reality and digital cars
What's Bad:

  • Lacking single player Campaign
  • No dynamic time and no wet weather at launch
  • Still no launch control or realistic assists settings
  • VR Tour is a missed opportunity
  • Server connection requirement for saving

This is a similar situation to Destiny 2 vs Destiny 1 for me. Both games are sequals with less content than before. It's just that GTS is focusing on something else, and that focus feels like a breath of fresh air as opposed to Destiny 2 being the focud as Destiny 1, just with less meaningful stuff to do.

Come on, that is really bullshit. People wanted the series to evolve like the competition which was smoking the GT series in features. Especially around customization, damage and online. Cherry picking things like the models being reused is being highly disingenuous to what the real issues were that people had with the series.

I think you (and a whole host of others in this thread) are suffering a little from confirmation bias. You are exaggerating the importance of the reviews because they happen to fit your narrative. Aside from the severe lack of content and somewhat bizarre always-online requirement, this shift in focus was always going to see the reviews take a hit. What matters, particularly with this game which is both a platform and a service, is what happens in the medium to long term, not what a range of relatively clueless reviewers feel a couple of days after the game releases.

Gran Turismo Sport's success will depend on what happens next, in how they decide to cultivate the multiplayer through the Sport mode, something they're already tweaking day to day, in how much single player content they add, in how many and how quickly they can add tracks, cars and weather. The game's base quality is not in question, the way the game feels to play on pad or wheel, and the way the game looks, are being praised almost universally. The game may content but what is there is undeniably high quality. It's a base for future success.

Not really.

More like if Destiny 2 did not have a campaign, but only crucible.

Of course you´d only had 2 classes to choose from and only 4 maps.

And of course you could not play when you wanted, but had to wait for the next scheduled match.

Listening to Peter Brown and Jeff Gerstmann discuss this game on Bombcast and their impressions make the online mode sound kinda bad.

T10 subcontract nearly all their modelling, don't PD do all theirs in house?.

Yes & yes.

Most stubborn decision I have ever seen.

One of the many reasons why I think PD and Kaz are out of touch.

Outsource your busy work! Everybody does it.

THE CONSUMER DOES NOT CARE. This is just Kaz´s fucking ego acting up again.

Focus on your campaign, your mechanics and your smooth jazz.

Wasn't there an artical about GTS being fromte grounds up somewhere? I can't seem to recall where I read that. Forza and pcars are not. Am I wrong?

Forza 5 was from the ground up. It was also lacking content, but they managed it for the console's launch. Not 4 years into its life, after talking up how future-proof their previous car models were.

Project Car is on its second (crowdfunded) entry... Project Cars started this generation out with the absolute least in terms of foundation.

One of their focuses is the extremely high quality of the car models. I don't think they'll ever just outsource that.

And yes, there's a pretty stark difference between, for example, car interiors between GTS and F7. They don't want to compromise.

They should.

Or we will never have a proper GT game in the HD era.

I bet it will also sell the worst out of all the GTs besides maybe GT6. The concept of this thing sucked from the first moment.

Inside Sim Racing is pretty positive about GT Sport. I agree that 60 euros is steep for what it is in its current form but I can 't wait to see what the game will mature into.

Funny thing is, they probably have a bunch of cars and tracks ready to release as DLC soon (few months), they didnt include them because they wanted to 1-give free dlc and get some good coverage later 2-sell it lol (I feel like option 1 is more likely). So as they are stuck with not many cars and tracks, they probably thought that having championships with them would become very repetitive so they decided to cut them from the game.

It wouldnt really be difficult to create those championships, its already a feature included in the game lol. Then car upgrade is also something that shouldn't take long to implement (it's basically some different attributes cars would have to be used in the driving model...). There is the underpower/overpower options but it's not the same (its basically the very same system in theory but it just doesn't feel like that, feel like magic and not satisfying at all).

So those 2 small things that they didn't include out of lazyness (yup) alone aren't really big deals, but together you just have no incentive for buying cars, you wont race with them (most online races give you the car already...) and wont upgrade it either because there is no championship for you to race using them. I buy cars just to take photos in Scapes (!!!).

Another things, as there arent many cars in the game, I completed 50% of circuit experience with gold (I feel like gold is much easier now than it was in previous GTs, but it can be that I am just getting better) and I was awarded several fast amazing vehicles! I wanted to save money to get a La Ferrari and a Lambo, but I got those as a prize in 2 small circuits LOL. I dont feel like really trying all the licenses and all if I already have all the great cars (why would I push myself to get some more prizes just to get shitty n200 n300 cars or repeated powerful ones?

Anyway, I think the game is solid, has a lot to evolve, but its a really great driving experience and even with all its "flaws" I wouldn't give it less than 8 ever. I personally feel like its close to 9 because I dont care about offline championships (the mission challenge are way more fun).

That's your opinion. I probably touched less than 10% of the cars in GT6 so to me it might very well be a waste.

I'm personally kinda bummed at the focus on high-end racing instead of regular cars and I would have loved more diversity instead of just a higher total number. But neither approach will appease everyone.

Yes, but people deciding that Gran Turismo Sport is a disaster/was a mistake based on those reviews is short sighted, as I've just explained. If we still lived in the era of, say, Gran Turismo 4, where the game was the game and never could change, then perhaps it would be a reasonable conclusion.

Not a surprise. Many people will buy the game because it's Gran Turismo and they won't do any research to see if it's something for them or not.

Can you blame them? It has been such a very long time since the last game and GT has millions of fans.
