Is it like Persona where I can just come in with 5? Or do I need to play the first one to know what the heck is going on?

So funny enough, I just got into the series like 2 days ago by emulating Persona 4. Im having lots of fun, but as someone whose clueless of the series as a whole, whats the difference between this and the Persona games??
- In Persona, the Demons are called Persona and they are basically a psychological things in people mind. In SMT, the Demons are real creatures and manifests in real world, they even retain their original backstory (usually weaved into the story and sidequests). Think American Gods by Neil Gaiman.
- Persona is a combination of lifesim and JRPG, SMT is structured closer to traditional JRPG.
- Gameplay wise, in SMT Demons form your party (think Pokemon) compared to Persona with the fixed human party members. Think what if in Persona your party members also can change Persona like the main protagonist.
- Persona is sets in modern day Tokyo. SMT is sets in Post Apocalyptic Tokyo. Think Fallout/Mad Max, but instead of mutants, it is infested with demons/gods/deities from various myth.
- SMT mainly explores the human nature/social issues when society collapse. This includes things like cannibalism, cult, religion fanaticism, slavery, drugs, children farming, etc. Think Lord Of The Flies or Heart Of Darkness. Basically edgier than Persona.
- SMT is not as dialogue heavy as Persona and doesn't really focus on the characters.
- SMT typically deconstruct tropes commonly associated with anime (like power of friendship) instead of playing it straight like Persona.
- In Persona, you are saving the world and for the most part a story of good vs evil. In SMT, you are shaping the world the way tou see fit (you can be YHVH messiah and sets up a totalitarian world, or you can be Lucifer's general and sets up a "eat or be eaten" world) and typically more gray in morality.
TL;DR : The Bible+American Gods+Lord Of The Flies+Fallout/Mad Max+Cyberpunk = SMT
What's crazy is that I have SMT: Nocturne still wrapped in the plastic and I think I'll give it a run before SMT V comes out. I've been meaning to for years, but never got around to it.
SMT definitely has me curious! Its dark tones definitely sound like something I'd be into. What would you suggest? Is there any of them on the PS2 I can emulate like Persona 4?
Ahahcant wait for this !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and also fk u sony
SMT3 Nocturne ! There is also Digital Devil Saga duology and Raidou Kuzunoha which is also totally different than mainline or Persona.
good that it's Switch exclusive
good for tears. don't pull a Capcom on me, Atlus. none of that RE4 shit.

Glad it's V but I would've been fine with a remake/spin off. I've only played IV and Apocalypse. Time to finally try out Nocturne I guess then.
Do it! One of the best, most atmospheric games ever.
I never thought I'd say this but... I kind of prefer SMT4 and 4:A's graphical style over what the trailer showed.
It kinda looks too... "persona", for the lack of a better word.
What!!? How is this looks like "Persona" to you exactly!!?

i cant tell you dont give a shit about smt
Wish I had money for a Switch. Shouldn't have bought a PSVR.
I'm excited for this game
I'm quite new to SMT. But I did enjoy TMS and I'm currently playing Persona 5. I cannot wait for SMT V to come.
Never played an SMT game before but I really, really enjoyed Persona 5. Think this would be a good pickup for someone with a super limited Switch library?
How do we know its not a timed exclusive?
Why are people saying it's exclusive? At no point in the trailer does it say only for switch or anything like that, it just has the switch logo. it's still entirely possible to see a PS4 release, unless there was some press info that Atlus put out saying it is only on Switch?
