Gran Turismo SPORT | OT | Putting it all on the line

So in the downtime I finally golded the last two Mission Stage 8 events I was missing. 15min oval endurance and 30min Interlagos endurance. After watching a random youtube video on Interlagos, I think I noticed a bug or glitch of the AI, however you want.
I just looked for most recent videos and this popped up. The guy - while not a bad driver at all - didn't have any special driving skills and even switched through multiple cameras suggesting he didn't have super hard time there. Nonetheless he simply tore through the pack on Interlagos from the start and even claimed 1st place on the first pit stop! This was simply impossible to me before, I noticed his massive gains right away when he already overtook 4 AI drivers in the first lap. Eventually he came in 20s ahead which is just crazy, I had an almost perfect race there and my best was 16s behind on 4th place. What the hell did he do different?
Well, I think it has something to do with the difficulty presets in the game. I don't have proof yet, but after making changes I needed only two more races to get the gold and would have needed just one if the AI hadn't spun me out three times in the final lap before.
You cannot make any changes to the setup or the car except tire selection, TC and fuel mapping, so there really can't be that much different, can it? The guy showed his settings and the only difference was his difficulty preset. I used to set it to Expert, which eliminates basic driving assists. But I also think it is tied to the difficulty preset of the AI, so the expert setting also loads the expert difficulty of the AI - again, just making suggestions based on my observations. So basically, if you go for Expert and change oversteer countering assists or race line to off, you will switch to the Custom preset. I tried it just for the hell of it and noticed huge gains per lap and eventually came in 1st with 4s ahead of the pack. So if you're having trouble with the golds and are driving on the Expert preset, you can give this a try and see if it helps.

My strategy for Gold in the endurance races in short:

Stage 8-6 15min oval:
Car: Subaru Gr. 3
Tires: Soft/Soft
Fuel Mapping: 1
Pit: Lap 9, Tires: Medium/Medium, Fuel: full refuel (12laps), Fuel mapping: 1

Stage 8-7 30min Interlagos:
Car: -
Tires: Soft/Soft every time
Fuel Mapping: 1
Pit: as needed, just don't refuel full tank on the last stop, only 5 or 6 laps

Stage 8-8 4 laps Nürb 24h:
Car: Audi R8 LMS (I got a decent setup, just makes sure to use full downforce if you don't want to get into tuning)
Tires: Hard/Hard
Fuel Mapping: 6 (yes, you can undercut the AI and it also saves your tires, just make sure to boot it up to 1 before Döttinger Höhe ;) )
Pit: Lap 2, Tires: Hard/Hard, Fuel: no refuel

So the daily races are not here for a week after all, even though it said so on the GT website.

Has PD updated on us a new update schedule? I would like to know in advance when races are supposed to change, so I can plan when I'm playing Sport.

Is everyone only getting 12 players in a race? It seemed to be 24 last week, and now I am only in races with half the field.

When you click on a race you can see race settings details. These 3 races are with 12 cars max.

Ah.. I wonder if they dropped it to help server load? The first day or so was full grid.

Has anyone else noticed a sharp fall off in people racing online?, I was getting full servers last week, now it seems you are lucky if you get 10 people in a server.

A lot of casuals who can't get get into decent finishing positions will simply give up. GTS online is really only for the diehards.

Yeah, I guess so, still a shame to see, the online system is one of the best there is.

Most people won't win, then you have to wait 5-15 minutes for another race. You can't have both. PUBG has 99 losers in every match but to play again takes no time or effort at all.

They've cut the max number of racers per race to 12.

People were complaining 24 was "too chaotic". Can't have it all I guess.

For real?, blimey!

Yeh they did it the same day they switched over the dailies.

It also gives people more opportunity to increase their driver rating since if you find yourself at the back of the pack there are half the number of cars to get past.

I don't know whether it's because of the change or because people are generally getting better but the races are a lot closer now than they were at launch. Had some great battles on the current selection of tracks. Particularly the GR3 and GR4 races.

These 3 races are with 12 people max. It's not necessarily a permanent change to have all future Sport races with that player count, but just a way for PD to shake the race dynamics up a bit from time to time. 24 player online races can return in next race update

This was set to happen, honestly.

You were quick to jump in with that clueless reply lol.

So why have they cut Sport from 24 players? I just assumed the matchmaking was just a bit broken, is it a decision or a technical limit due to the fact that the race I tried had custom liveries enabled? Anyone know for sure?

I'm all for adjusting the online experience as time goes on to improve it, and for variety, but 24 players was once of the best aspects of it. With 12 it's hard finding people as crap as me :) What about 16 even?

My own personal adjustments would be ditch that Oval track forever, end development of any walled city tracks like Tokyo. Basically anything that doesn't resemble a functional racing track, or fantasy racing track. Consistent variety is the recipe.

Another note, now every time I finish a race, if I race again immediately, the next available event will be the same race. Previously it would have been the next race. I guess this is down to them changing how spaced out the events are, oh well.

Yeah narrow racing doesn't suit online tbh, sure keep it for arcade mode, but I don't want some bellend thinking I'm their braking point.

I prefer offline single player racing and prefer the old GT versus GT Sport. Is it therefor worth it to play GT6? Haven't played it (but have played 3, 4 & 5). Still have the PS3 around so. I have played 5 for ages, is 6 any better?

The difficulty spike in 8-6 is kinda annoying. I breezed through all the other trials including 8-7 and 8-8 but this is just impossible. The first 3 cars are just way too fast.

You really need ne Subaru to win it, I have tested a lot with 5 different cars, but none comes close to the cornering and exit speeds of the Subaru.

Really? I know good Soft tyres would help keep in touch with the leaders but pushed they would disintegrate pretty quickly and force more pit-stops, maybe even one really late in the race. I will try it though. I usually start with Medium front's and Soft rear's...good enough to bag me 4th place on my first pit-stop, change to Medium's all round and come out neck-and-neck with the top three on my last pit-stop. It's all good enough for Silver.

At that point it's all about lapping traffic...hoping they get stuck somewhere. I've melted many, many hours trying to get Gold.

8-8 was super easy compared to 8-7.

Chucked a room up on my discord for racingGAF incase it all goes belly up here again.

https://discord.gg/7QMKRQ (expires after a day...will relink if asked:)
I'll join it...but I haven't a clue how it works ha.

I've not gone online with this game yet but I expect it's the first few corners blues, rather than the bulk of the race, that's done this.

I'm maybe mistaken, but I think a full tank covers hardly 8 laps on mapping 1, so you'd have to come in after 7, which the softs will do without losing too much time. I think it's quite the sweet spot for softs on that car/track combination.
I took the lead just after my first pit stop and never gave it away again.

The AI is also horribly slow when overtaking traffic later in the race, another big advantage to use.

Still not sure about this one. Is there currently an exploit where you could make your car faster under Sport mode?Downgrades etc..
Also what are you guys using for the Gr3 race currently. My Aston is not good.

Question: how does the matchmaking work in the game. Can I start the game and simply search for a race (like searching for a game in cod) or is matchmaking limited to the sport races that happen all 20 mins or so?

You can do both, although the ranking only works in the sport races.

did you play GTS or are you making assumptions? I played hundreds of hours of GTP and GT5, very small amount of GT6 and never online, yet I love GTS.

Gonna have to get adjusted to this wheel setup, its been a long-ass time since I played any racer with a wheel. I feel like its almost impossible to recover from a tailspin with a wheel.

You took the lead just after your first pit-stop! How the hell...?

I mean maybe your a wheel user with real racing experience or something but I'm nowhere near that. I slowly but surely catch them but the last 10 laps or so are like a stalemate until I manage to pit, change tyres and only take on a couple of laps of extra fuel. That's how I get neck-and-neck. If I don't keep first place behind me it's game over.

By the first pit-stop on Soft tyres your in first place. I can't image that to be even possible.

I never change the default tuning, tires, etc... I'm not really knowledgeable in that area of the game. Any general tips on what I should be thinking about tuning wise? Maybe a link to a guide?

GTplanet has some good tunes on their forums.

If you're trying to keep up in Sport, you need a decent tune for sure.

Not at all, far from that, also I'm on pad control.
I made the same experience like you and before making real progress in attacking 1st place I easily had 20 or more tries on that race. Details are above, I couldn't even make it to podium.
This is the video I watched that made me suspicious if there maybe is a bug/glitch in the AI difficulty.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjOacOeLlNY

As you can see, the guy is cutting off 2-3s per lap, he's 3rd on lap 6 and taking the lead just after the AI pits.

Are you on expert assists preset? Try custom.

Hang in there! Most of the time if someone rear ends you just assume it's on them during the race and once it ends you can think who was at fault. If you break to early/late or if you take a bad line and cut in front of someone and they hit you , the SR will go against you. In the moment though it's hard to tell and I wouldn't work yourself to much up over it.

Right now SR B, tend to be a little more defensive but unless the person in front of me is racing perfectly I will ease off a tiny bit and let them feel the constant pressure , they tend to make a bad turn/crash and then move up. Also of it's close to the end and I see they cut a corner I will just let them finish in front of me and move past them with the penalty if I am not in pressure of losing my spot.

Now that you say that, it might be so. I remember the race I won I took two or three hits in three different curves, the opposing cars hit me but I would say that they have a better position. The hits were minimun so nothing severe really happened but I wondered why I was getting my SR down when I was the one being hit.

Ok i probably just missed it. But is tire wear active in online race? That would make sense of me losing grip on the last lap last night executing a turn exactly the same way id been for the first 3

The GT3 class needs serious balancing, it's dominated by 4WD cars.

Anyway, I love the fantasy tracks, they are an absolute joy to drive.
