Sony warns trade war could lead to PlayStation price hikes

I imagine people in Japan expect to earn honest wages. Those prices get passed on to us consumers. We can't have that now.
Have you seen their anime industry? Their artists are working for almost slave wages to make those cartoons.

Also, not everything has to be about money.

If Hitler was making your TV's, would you still feel good buying them, even if he was selling them for dirt cheap?

And yet toei still fucked up the budget giving us a lackluster first half of DBS in terms of animation (it really wasnt until goku black taht the quality really picked up here and there and not until ToP when the animation actually went from ok to amazing)

Lol, u can price hike all you want sony, people will just floke to the next guy.

If sony's smart they move out of china with production, and if they can't get ready for a crippled ps5

Why not just release games on pc, I don’t want to buy any consoles just for some extra games anymore. Same goes for Microsoft and Nintendo.

As long as someone in China can do that job at fraction of the salary, every corporation is basically forced to use them, or risk falling behind others that are willing to use that labor. So what Trump has been trying to do is pretty interesting. It's going to be a major struggle trying to get off that China teat.

Sony should move production of ps4 to another country outside China. There was an article that said Nintendo was moving switch production out of China due to the trade war.

Sure Sony, suuuuure!

I'm sure MS will appreciate that with the Scarlett coming out next year. Some nice early PR for them if they announce a lower price, should give them a headstart if that happens!

Who is Hitler here - Sony, China or Donald Trump?
Is this a troll post?
Sony is a corporation that doesn't do much but try to make money. Trump is the legally elected President of the U.S.

China holds no democracies and regularly abuses their citizens via harvesting organs or operating mobile execution vans.

You think Microsoft is immune to this? You've got disappointment coming.

Not immune, but with the financial clout MS with their PC OS products still making the big bucks has they can eat the cost if they keep the price lower than Sony to get an early advantage when their new console releases in just over a year's time, unlike Sony who financially have been all over the place over the last few years across many of their tech markets, they can't really afford to take a bigger hit with each unit sold when the PS5 hits.

Why didn't developers just release all their apps on the Microsoft Store so I could put them on my Windows Phone?

Don't be stupid Sony. You make more than enough money to stomach a few tariffs before the new people add a direct line between their credit card and your operating account.

I suppose a global market has its ups and its pitfalls. Cheaper labour in China I suppose. I do wonder if the trade agreement between the EU and Japan will bring more manufacturing back to Japan though since the EU is probably their biggest market and not having tariffs to worry about will probably be a major boon.

As an aside, Trump's tariffs on imports from China are to blame for this, there's no real getting away from it.

Aren't XBox Ones made in China too? I seem to recall reading an article about them opening manufacturing there. If that's the case then I can see XBox being hit more with these tariffs considering their US market.*

*I'm possibly wrong on this so don't shout at me.

Ah the joys of Capitalism. ;)

So what system is better again?

I doubt that's possible. They have the money, but their investors have been unhappy with the Xbox division losing money (or being the least profitable division) for years. I doubt they're going to be ok bleeding money by selling the next Xbox at a big loss per unit. Spencer has been saying consoles sold aren't the main metric anymore etc., which also isn't indicative of being willing to take a loss to sell as many consoles as they can.

I think it's pretty much a given the next Xbox and PS5 will launch at the same price--probably $500 is my best guess. MS is isn't going to piss money away to try and be cheaper and sell more consoles when they're moving away from focusing on that and on to selling as many games and services as they can across Xbox, PC and other devices.

Hardcore, Day One PS5 buyers will pay almost any price, so the threat of a higher cost won’t do much damage at the onset. Every platform has its legion of automatic launch buyers flush with cash or credit just to be able to say “FIRST!”.

It’s what happens after the first wave that will be telling. Once the core gaming consumer demographic has bought their consoles, then there’s the risk of lower adoption by more casual players, opening the possibility of sooner-than-desired price cuts.

One thing is crystal clear: Platform holders will absolutely be passing any cost increase from tariffs onto consumers. There won’t be any “good guy” companies here. Financially savvy gaming consumers should start planning for those higher prices now when budgeting for next year.

I'm okay with this. Next gen, Sony doesn't have ANYTHING I want to play. All of the games I went to their platform for moved on to PC or Switch.

If this happens, people living in US might want to consider buying PS5 in Canada. May still end up getting the cheapest pricing, like you always do every gen.

Boo fucking hoo.

Who exactly is this aimed at? It can't be Sony because Sony will not lose anything, they'll just increase the price to cover any losses. They're just warning consumers beforehand that that might be the case. So if it isn't Sony, it can only be consumers. Poor consumers perhaps? Those who can't afford a console deserve a 'boo fucking hoo.? I take it you'll be ok then ...

Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia is indeed another one, however, I think there are two things stopping them from world domination.
1. Oil. Once that runs out or if we do find an alternate source of energy, they'll start panicking.
2. Too many enemies. Being in the Middle East, Shia and Sunnis don't like each other. They would have to fight their way out, and then fight Israel, before they can start dictating to Europe or the rest of Asia.

I would be more scared of Saudi's using their money to recruit terrorists and sending them across the world, but I don't think they have the capacity to actually rule everyone.
Excuse me? What kind of rubbish is this? I'm from Saudi Arabia and what you're saying is incorrect at all
But again don't mind me please, go get brainwashed by your media as usual. You aren't considered the most stupid people on earth out of nothing after all

Apologies, I didn't mean it to come across that way. My point of "the world is a broad church" was me saying that every country feels their way is the right way. My response in the above was more of a response regarding an "alien" culture or ideology being seen as inferior.
I see even Socialism has been denounced on this thread. Something which brought the UK it's NHS - probably the thing we're most proud of. Apart from possibly Patrick Stewart.

No offence meant at all chief, discussion had just got a bit frayed at the edges. My apologies again.

And yes, no more politics.;)

It’s going to be more profitable to Sony if the tariffs will hit so they can release more games and not worry about higher cost for consoles. I hate playing on PlayStation so it benefits me of course, finally this situation creates a win win situation for me and Sony to ditch console and just focus on PC. For Linux/phone OS I’ll have to see, for now they aren’t good enough for most AAA games, may be in the future they will.

This, the companies should look at moving manufacture to Mexico or other closer ally countries.

I still can’t believe that the production on items like the iPhone isn’t that automated now it isn’t cheaper to have a factory of robots in Texas. How much human interaction do we still need when piecing them together? I can’t believe we don’t have the tech already to do complete assembly without humans standing in the production line.

My only thought is Foxconn know their only valuable when they need a presence.

In less then 20 years time we’ll have driverless trucks delivering the pieces, robots unloading while the trucks skip around to another dock and getting re-loaded with the finished product. The faster we move to this the better.

Machines without humans controlling them are pure garbage. I’m telling you that from personal experience in factories with robots. They may work on their on but if a problem happens (and it often happens) then a human must solve the problem.

Robots are still stupid.

That's an understatement. The price of PS5 will probably steer the path of the industry for a good 6-8 years after the machine launches. If Sony gets it right then things probably stay the same with more choices popping up. If Sony gets it wrong, well, your guess is as good as mine. Lots of big corporate behemoths hoping for just that.

Pro edition was a good sign, obviously casual gamers will react poorly to a high priced console.

Its them trying to save face if they raise prices. No one is buying marked up PS4s at this late in the generation. Theyre really dreaming that this PR is positive for them. Its not, they need to move that manufacturing out of china and stop blaming US policy for thier lack of forsight.

Theyll suck up the tariffs is my bet and quietly move manufacturing to other asian countries.

Fuck Sony, i have no sympathy for them.

I’m totally expecting $499, why? Because people are okay with paying $1000 for a smartphone every year, I’m sure they won’t mind a half a price entertainment system. This is probably lee way to them setting up the price to $499. Which was probably going to happen anyway.

First year doesnt really matter that much. Most of the console sales will be from early adopters, and it will probably sell well no matter what price.

Its useful to explain what this really is. Tariffs going from 10-25 percent, so its a net increase of 15 percent on price for US consumers. US console sales is aprox 1/3 of overall sales. That 15 percent will probably be spread out to all consumers, so net increase will probably be around 5 percent. They may also be able to move some of the production from China, so that would be about 3 percent increase on every console sold. Thats about 15 dollars on a 499 price.

Hey, how about you let the mods decide what people post or dont post or where they post? Thank you very much.

OP: I bet the only thing that will happen is that they move out of China if the price becomes too prohibitive. Sony just wants to make money, if China is no longer the best place for that, they'll just pick up their things and leave.

Considering PS4's are still over $300 a year before the PS5 is supposed to drop Sony makes plenty of money as their recent financial news suggests. My advice would be to eat the short term loss and not get greedy. Pass that cost to someone besides the customers.

You know something?

People will want to blame Trump for this but how come no has ever asked: why are we supporting Communist China?

Imagine if all our TV's, Cars, Clothes etc had been made in the Soviet Union during the Cold War. There would be outrage. Yet after all these years, why did we give Communist China a pass?

Communist China is just as terrible when it comes to gross human rights violations yet we continue to send all our jobs and products over there.

Rather than support a totalitarian dictatorship, why doesn't Sony make Playstations in Japan? If they still care about their heritage, wouldn't it be a win? Or maybe moving their headquarters to California probably messed up their brains and all they care about is making money.

Otherwise, China is going to keep getting rich, we lose all our jobs, and a Communist state will influence global policy. Hope yall like the great leap forward coming to your doorstep.
But Sony is not an US company 🤔

I’m ok with that.

Won’t support a country that go against HK and Taiwan freedom. Also China is a big supporter of Maduro.

I would happily pay more for the cause.
