Sony now owns the Sunset Overdrive IP.

As previously expected, Sony now owns the Sunset Overdrive brand. Despite the game first launching as an Xbox One exclusive, Insomniac Games famously retained the rights to the intellectual property. PlayStation has since purchased the Marvel’s Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank developer, but Worldwide Studios chairman Shawn Layden said he’d need to “turn over the files” for the full story.

Speaking with Japanese publication Inside Games, the ever-affable Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed that the Japanese giant does now own the Microsoft published title. “SIE holds the rights to past Insomniac Games works,” he admitted. So what are the chances of a port, then? “I am looking forward to future titles.”

It doesn’t sound like Sony has much interest in reviving the Sunset Overdrive franchise, which makes sense given its poor commercial performance compared to the developer’s PlayStation exclusive output. We’d probably play a port if it ever arrived on the PlayStation 4, but there are probably so many legal hurdles in the way that it’s just not worth the effort.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, please.

Well, there you have it. You never know, there's always a chance we may get a port or a sequel in the future. At least, that's what I'm hoping for because I adore that game!

Whew! Thought it would be impossible if ever getting a sequel since Insomniac was under Sony

Old news, they have the IP not the game....the first was published by MS. They would have to get some kind of deal to port the first game but they can make a sequel without a problem. It's kinda like a Bayonetta situation.

Microsoft is Insomniac's cuck.

Pay to have them make you a franchise, but let them keep the rights to it because "our friends at Insoniac".

They didn’t really care to make a sequel from it when they had the chance, I don’t think they care too much tbh. If this game gets a sequel, even if it’s exclusive, that’s great. Would hate to see it die.

It'll almost definitely get a port. Because as it stands right now, Sony owns an IP that is currently Xbox exclusive. Pride by itself will demand it be ported.
And that being said, if Insomniac want to make a sequel I think Sony would allow it.

Sony had the chance to publish this game first, iirc and they weren’t interested. Maybe they will now, but we have no reason to believe that.

If Insomniac starts working on Spider-man sequels then I don’t want them to touch the IP unless it can get their full undivided attention and not some side project.

I rather have Sony make Insomniac produce Spider-Man 2 game rather than producing another Sunset Overdrive on the PS4.

Guess we should be thankful for the PC port we did get, even if it never included multiplayer.

It would have sold much better on PS4 since most of Insomniac's fans are already there and was released close to the console launch when there weren't many players. The game is terrific and once you get in the groove it really flows. Hope they make a sequel.

I disagree. I really enjoyed Spider-Man, but SO has deeper traversal mechanics. For one, there isn't a distinction between combat and movement, it's all in the same thing. SO is the closest we got to a legit Tony Hawk game this generation, I would kill for a sequel.

lol that was unexpected lol

Spider-man brought Sunset Overdrive.

And Insomniac wanted to hold their IPs... $$$.

Didn’t we already know this?

We had a few hold outs ignoring logic. Many of us got it when Sony bought Insomniac.

Insomniac has new IP
Sony wants to buy new IP
Insomniac doesn't want to sell new IP
Sony will not publish unless they own the IP
Insomniac will have MS publish new IP cause MS will let them keep new IP....

Sony buys Insomniac.

"Ok...here me out, this is how Sony doesn't own da IP broz"

What was so sad, was that the team even made it clear that the only reason MS published it was cause they wanted to keep the IP, yet suddenly that little fact escaped folks minds or something. Twas only logic. They are saying it , but many of us got that when Sony made the official purchase.

They'll probably wait until next gen to port it over to Playstation. Its an easy title to boost the early library of the PS5.

Doubtful. They have a higher install base on PS4 clearly and PS5 is BC, it would make more sense to just port to the larger install base as the PS5 base can still actually get the title and play it.

I cannot think or comprehend of anything more cucked than publishing an Insomniac game. Honestly, think about it rationally. You are paying devs, scheduling, selling and marketing a game for at least three years solely so it can go and get acquired by another hardware manufacturer. All the hard work you put into your beautiful little game - discussing the story with Ted Price, making the studio go to E3, making sure the game stays on schedule, educating the devs on the Xbox One hardware, play-testing with them. All of it has one simple result: the game is more enjoyable for other hardware makers.

Made the perfect game? Great. Who benefits? If you're lucky, a random studio who had nothing to do with the way the game was made, who buys Insomniac. They get to put the game on their hardware. They get the benefits of its kind and sweet control and sick verticality that came from the way you worked on it.

As a hardware maker who has a contract with Insomniac, you are LITERALLY dedicating at least three years of your life simply to develop a game for Sony to enjoy. It is the ULTIMATE AND FINAL cuck. Think about it logically.

Yeah it's under Sony's belt, but they don't even need this and should not and most probably will not ever use this...….I have this on PC....4k 60fps and the whole nine yards, not impressed. Now Ratchet and RFOM are good games and of course Spiderman may be Insomniac's best game yet. I would love something from Resistance a million times over before they should even bother with Sunset Overdrive, Hell I'd take a sequel to FUSE before I'd ever sanction a new Sunset Overdrive...

Buy Sunset Overdrive ip only for them to not use it

sounds like a good plan

Im glad the average Neogaf users are smarter than Sony executives
You are welcome to make the argument that Sony bought insomniac for the Sunset Overdrive IP and not for the talent of the studio.

They have the IP, it can be used, but I don't think they will.

Why not

SO is still a great game

I want SO2 beside a new spiderman and resistance game

Theres nothing wrong with having more options

Well you can blame MS for that. Its not as if they got nothing, they still moved units with it and got some money. We all might question their logic, but to them the deal made sense in a situation where they didn't have much of a line up. I do agree that they shouldn't have went into the generation with that mindset, no argument here, but the issue itself if it couldn't be helped and was their only way, I 100% get why they did it.

I can't say I'd start a generation doing junk like that, but mid gen when things already happened and you have no choice, sure, it makes sense at the time. With them buying a bunch of teams, it seems like they will cool down with that type of behavior.

Trust me, this is NOTHING compared to them losing Bioware and Mass Effect IP. At the time, they already told folks it was going to be a trilogy, Bioware came off of Jade Empire and KOTOR and the gen just started. EA scooping up Bioware and that IP is a fault of MS not taking the generation seriously.

If you look at Sony, they might have seemed like they were letting go of deals like GTA, Final Fantasy, Tekken etc, but they were letting go of stuff they knew they couldn't hold on to with MS having the head start and started building a warchest of developers like Sucker Punch, GG etc

It's just my opinion, as they don't use every IP they own. I don't know if SO was big enough to have remained relevant at this point. I don't hear many people asking for it.

Also, I'm not saying I wouldn't want it, but at this point I won't hold my breath.
