Skullgirls- New Characters, Painwheel and Valentine, Announced [Full Roster Revealed]

...So, as you can see, we've moved onto bosses.

I'm going to confirm here and now that Squigly and Umbrella are not going to be in the core game, and both will be early DLC characters.

This wasn't an easy decision: the game's budget couldn't cover 10 characters, we needed bosses, and neither of these characters have a particularly prominent role in the first arc of the story. On top of that, Squigly's gameplay concept is pretty out there, and couldn't be accomplished with our existing tech.

I hope all the Squigly and Umbrella fans out there understand, and I think they'll be worth the wait.

Oh and the honesty here is super appreciated. The fact that you and your team go to such lengths to both listen to us and keep us informed is a big part of what has enamored me to this game. I'm not sure exactly what to make of the bolded though. Like you guys need some future space tech or something? Squigly confirmed time traveler! :p

Though I'm not expecting gameplay footage tomorrow, I'm assuming Valentine will be playable at SCR correct? Any hope for a bio update on the official website for her soon?

Topic title needs an update BTW

I only just discovered this game but I'm really liking the look of it. Reminds me of Rakuga Kids, which I played the hell out of when I was younger.

And neither BlazBlue nor KOF are releasing their titles at 15-20 dollar price points. To imply that the roster is crippled because we're replacing Squigly and Umbrella with Valentine and another unrevealed character is a bit far to me.

See, I did not know that the new reveals was supposed to be DLC only, and this is more like a "logistics" move, not a roster size reduction. Therefore my whole post is pointless, so move along! :)

I assume I'm late on watching that features video on eurogamer, but I like that the video itself said Early 2012. With only one character left to reveal, and her being farther along than Painwheel, I'm hoping it's not too early to finally be hyped for the first week of January. I guess the game will be going gold in a few weeks, can't wait!

The game isn't coming out with eight characters and two Day 1 DLC characters so I'm not sure how it's now suddenly crippled.

Whoa, whoa... don't go putting words in my mouth! This is how rumors get started, and you know how people feel about Day 1 DLC.

If we have any Day 1 DLC at all, it'll be free. And it certainly wouldn't be anything "essential" like new characters.

They will be playable. Mike Z already said that they won't waste their resources on boss characters that can't be used.

...Hmmm.

I knew there would be a difference between the main boss and sub bosses, but I didn't know it went that far.

My bad if I accidentally read your answer regarding the subject as one of Mike's responses.
She wouldn't make a very good nurse based on her dislikes.
Thread-worthy?
Title change worthy.

Edit: Found the quote concerning bosses.
"Q: You think they will ship an arcade mode without a boss?
A: I'm going to respond to this. Given the choice between doing anything at all to make the versus/multiplayer aspects of SG better, or spending time on a boss...I would choose to skip the boss in a heartbeat.
This is all IMO, so don't take this as "there is no boss", just saying I object to your comment because it assumes priorities I personally don't have. (^.^)
"

It's looking like 8 at launch, with two planned that were pushed back to DLC in favor of getting the (edit: mid-)boss characters in, (edit)and maybe the final boss who is not sounding normally playable now (I'm guessing the Skullgirl herself).

So once that DLC hits we'll have presumably around 10.

EDIT: Whoa outsponded. Shoulda refreshed the page.

I think 2 vs 2 is best for this game

Nah no worries man, I was just saying there WOULDN'T/SHOULDN'T be any. I'm being reassuring, not alarming. Also, glad to see the profile up. Valentine's certainly a big girl in a lot of respects :)

Should I wait for the character video for the new thread?

You just made a new thread. I think getting a mod to change the title would be good enough. Change "Painwheel" to "Valentine" and we're good to go. We're barely at page two now, no need for a new thread just to sit at page one for another two weeks.

So what month of 2012 do you expect to release the game?
Also is Squigly intended to have like an insane amount of animation frames due to her 'morphing'?

I'm still waiting for people to take a queue from the greatest Ninja to ever grace a fighting game and I say this as someone who thinks that Strider is godlike.

With Mike Z at the helm of this thing, I find it hard to believe that there won't be some sort of Bang reference within Valentine's moveset or color palettes

Hard to say, exactly, because of how submission and slot assignment works. I think January's probably out at this point, though.

Things are progressing, though - we did get our ESRB rating: TEEN with Blood, Partial Nudity, Use of Tobacco, Violence.

I want to say that he included Bang in his list of Ninjas... I think it was Strider, Chip and Bang?

I had already decided in my mind for some strange reason that the game was releasing mid to late February. I don't really mind at all!

Also, I don't wanna sound like a blackmailing little bitch, BUT I seriously hope you guys already started the Steam approval process. If I have to wait 1 month after the console release, I'm not buying your game, because I don't support developers who treat PC users as an afterthought, indie or not.

I don't wanna sound like a little bitch

Then why even make the post? It's too bad there's a chance that you won't be getting the game because of some misguided feelings of neglect, especially considering what this game is likely to do for how people look at the proper way to make a fighting game. The devs seem to want to please all of their potential fans as much as possible, but they're still a small studio and there are some things that they just can't do. For instance, the release date being pushed back like it has been. Or, the fact that the game is going to ship with 8 characters. Or not having an initial disc release. And, likely, not releasing on PC the same day as consoles. Yea, it sucks, but honestly, we're all having to deal with different issues about this game.

Those kind of things aren't going to stop us from supporting the game, however, because it's not like their trying to screw us over intentionally or milking us for whatever they can get. Reverge is working really hard to bring us the best possible fighter they can. If you can't see that then you won't be missed even if you choose not to buy the game.

That's fine, but look at it MY way. There's a huge opportunity here, if Reverge and Autumn can tap into the indie market with the help of Steam, but delaying the game too long won't help it, since potential casual players will most likely choose to buy it on the 360 or PS3 if they already have a console, even if they would rather play it on the PC. And it's in my interest that the PC scene for this game be strong, and for that it has to bring in new players to the fighting game genre, instead of just trying to cater to existing fans.

So, in the end, it would be pretty shitty for me to buy the game one month later, and then 2 months after that, the scene is dead.

See, this I can understand. Especially after seeing the state of the PC scene for SSIV:AE. Which is too bad since the game looks pretty great on it and from what little I played of it the online play seems tons better.

But you post a fairly random ultimatum like this with no reason:

Then you can't not expect being called out for being ridiculous.

Not hiding the fact I'm being selfish about it, but I am making sense, right?
Yeah, that's an absolutely legitimate worry and reason to pass over a game. Its just the way you presented it was all kinds of messed up.

Ultimatums in general rub me the wrong way though.

We haven't confirmed a PC version is even happening, let alone started on one, so, uh... sorry?

We're a small indie studio - we can't ship three platforms at once, and PC is the hardest to test and arguably the least profitable. But in the end, it's not even up to us.

If we do the PC version, though, there should be some nice enhancements...

I'm pushing for them to decide soon, though, so we can announce it before the console versions hit. I suspect a lot of people will double dip, but they shouldn't be "forced" to because of a lack of information.
