THQ lowers Q3 expectations by 25% on weak uDraw 360/PS3 sales, [Stock Still Tanking]

I've seen the Udraw on tv a bunch lately. It doesn't look like very complicated tech. I just can't see how it alone is sinking their quarter. I think they publish shit games and it's finally catching up with them.

I like THQ, Homefront aside, and even if I'm not a huge fan of most of their games I really hope they can stay in the industry.

I hope their next games sell decently so they can recover financially.

Hardware is more expensive to produce than printing disks that's for sure.

Also, I hate to be 'that' guy but if this bombed and Ubi's Drawsome(?) bombs as well things aren't looking good for Nintendo's push for tablet controllers.

I just hope they can continue to publish the South Park game before they collapse. I'd hate to see someone like EA end up with the rights, or some other scummy company.

Nintendo's marketing has been pretty stellar since the DS Lite launched (3DS aside) so I would hope that they could sell the crowd on the tablet. I didn't even know Drawsome and UDraw existed until this thread (not that I would of bought them anyway).

THQ hasn't had 1 disappointing HD release, they've had many.
Really? I know that De Blob 2 was a massive bomb but I thought that their other franchises were still doing OK. I know for sure that they never revised their sales downward 25% for any of their other sales miscues.

They are totally different devices and concepts.

The guy who extrapolates from anecdotal evidence? Yeah, you're being him.

The application of a drawing tablet on a dedicated console is extremely limited. I don't understand how an incredibly niche (and by all means, dated) peripheral can say anything about the standard controller for Nintendo's next console.

All of that said, the two controllers are almost nothing alike.

Hm. When is it going to be time to take a flyer on that stock? I'm surprised no one has bought all that cheap IP yet.

Well I could imagine that THQ and Ubisoft, after messing around with tablets themselves would be less interested in developing games for Nintendo's tablet.

It's a real shame De Blob 2 did so badly. It was actually a great platform game with a lot of charm and terrific music. I'd already played the first levels at home, but when I brought the game to a friend's house to demo his brandnew 3D TV I was astounded. Best 3D game graphics I'd seen so far. It really looked like a Pixar movie. A 10 minute demo and my friend wanted his own copy.

A drawing tablet and a tablet are two different things. There really isn't any comparison. If anything, Drawsome and uDraw are much more similar to the DS/3DS. There just isn't any correlation.

Maybe there is, I don't know Nintendo seems to go that route as well.

This is what UDraw for the HD systems looks like:

The tablet is a superset of the drawing pad.

You can't display stuff on the drawing pad for example.

The WiiU pad also has other features not common in other tablets (like dual sticks).

I actually bought Disney Princess w/uDraw Studio and tablet along with SpongeBob for my daughter for Christmas. Wii, mind you. She's seven.

Right, because THQ, who sold tons of uDraws on Wii, will abandon an entire console, because the same game bricked on the 360 and PS3.....Not the Wii... it did fine there, more than fine even, it was a breakout hit. But since the year old port didnt fly on MS and Sonys consoles, they will pack up and run as far from the entire WiiU console.

BTW I'm not surprisesd the uDraw tablet was an enormous failure on the PS3 and 360. It's a kid's toy. Just look at the (THQ) games that support it:

Pictionary
Dood's Big Adventure
SpongeBob SquigglePants
Kung Fu Panda 2
Disney Princess Enchanting Storybooks
Marvel Super Hero Squad: Comic Combat
uDraw Studio: Instant Artist

You get the impression have absolutely no idea how different the target demographics for the PS360 and Wii are ...

Ding ding. There is no software for the older/main target demographic on PS3/360's to buy the add-on. Why they thought it would sell I dunno.

I'm sitting with the Udraw tablet for 360 right now and it's absolutely horrible. It's a piece of junk that's impossible to use as a drawing tablet because of the input lag, the too short tether, stupid multitouch support that makes drawing with your hand resting on the unit impossible and generally not being a well thought out thing. The included software is weak as all shit as well.

Here's a connect the dots picture, and I swear to god I tried my best. I'm not the best artist in the world by a long mile, but even I can play god damned CONNECT THE DOTS. The straight lines will sometimes shoot off into oblivion for no reason. See those legs? I swear I drew a straight line on the tablet.

You'll also have no point of reference when you lift the pen, so you have to hoover it around over the tablet until your pointer is in the right position. Small details is even worse. It's so tedious and takes so much time it's infinitely more practical and easier to grab a piece of paper, a real pen and then follow the instructions on screen just drawing in real life.

Horrible, unplayable piece of SHIT.

iZLWFbho55pJ9.jpg

Look at this mess. While I suck at drawing, I had to fight the controls for like 40 minutes to get this crap out of it. Sure it's hilarious as an end result, but I can see why people don't buy this.

“Despite uDraw’s strong success on the Wii in fiscal 2011 and market research indicating strong demand for uDraw on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, initial sales of our uDraw tablet and software on these high-definition platforms have been weaker than expected,” said Brian Farrell, THQ president and CEO.

He could have saved that "market research". It was obvious for anyone that the target that has 360 or PS3 and DON'T have a Wii is not the potential target of uDraw.

THQ has been one of my favorite publishers this gen.

STALKER
Metro 2033
Saints Row series
Red Faction G
Dawn of War II and all the xpacks.
Darksiders
Space Marine
Supreme Commander
Company of Heroes

Fuck man. Find me a tangibly better resume than that. They burnt me on Homefront, but I kinda saw that one coming. I want THQ to survive. I think they publish some cool games.

So long as Volition and Relic make it out alive, all will be well. Volition has my vote for best dev this generation.

They don't really seem to have anything that is a big hit. Saints Row The Third is popular I guess, but what else did they do this year? Homefront flopped, Space Marine didn't do so well, Red Faction bombed. And I don't really see anything in the future that will change the trend.

This is unfortunate to hear. THQ's dev teams seem competent, but the publisher doesn't have any really big franchises or easy money makers like Activision, EA, and Ubisoft do.

Any idiot could have told them that uDraw would have been a failure on PS3/360. Hopefully they pull through since aside from some bad decisions their releases have been pretty good.

I agree with this. You might be able to sell it Wii users who see it as a Nintendo DS in big. But the HD consoles? Who would want to buy that?

Saints Row The Third is a got game though and I happy to hear that it is above expectations.

I am not surprised uDraw bombed on 360/PS3

I'm not surprised, either, although I think it's a cool concept. It was a surprise hit on the Wii last year, and THQ clearly thought they could easily replicate the success on the other two systems a year later.

It probably would have performed better on PS3 & Xbox 360 if they had done one or more of the following:

1. Released it last year at the same time that the Wii version came out.

2. Cut another $20 or more off of the initial price.

3. Packed in the Pictionary game and tried to market this package as an interactive party game for an older audience.

Another THQ fan here. I've purchased a ton of their games this gen and, Homefront and RF Apocalypse aside, generally enjoyed them all. Would be sad if they went down (need a sequel to DoW II and SPAAAAACE MARINE. I think Red Faction is probably lost to the ages however, which is unfortunate, since Guerilla was a blast to play.)

THQ has ALWAYS made shitty B games in some way or another and this harkens back to the NES days. All the games were completely half assed or deriviative of some A title. This constant downfall isnt suprising whatsoever.

I hope Devil's Third doesn't get canned.

thats all I really have to say about the topic, although Id love a saints row 4 and will pick up Darksiders 2.

I have said the before and Ill say it again, It makes sense for capcom to buy up THQ and make it its western arm. Don't change too much outside manage its budgets and marketing and you have a winner on your hands.
