post :)

I'd argue that "lack of locales" is one of the more egregious complaints to level against the game. From the beginning until the end, despite the lack of interconnectivity, I felt as though I did explore most of what the geographical area had to offer. Bright Falls, as a location, was superbly realised, and given the guided hand of the game (some sections more than others, as those who have played the game will know) no particular area overstayed its welcome.

Thanks for the info. So if they don't do a DX11 version are we likely looking at no AA outside of driver based or injected post process solutions?

As official solutions:

DX10+ renderer for MSAA.
SSAA or something like FXAA if they use dx9.

As unofficial, driver forced or FXAA injected.

So Alan wake is now once again relevant withing the PC community... ;)

I kid, I guess this is good news for Remedy and PC gamers, but how is this good move for MS and the 360 in terms of keeping exclusives.

Are you referring to me?

No, I wasn't referring to you. I was referring to those people arguing that the game ended up being linear because development was shifted to the 360 and those even saying that the game would have been much better with a sandbox approach, which was quite a widespread idea when the game was released.

The way I understand it, I think that many people were simply disappointed that they couldn't play the game on their (unarguably superior) platform of choice, especially given the developer's strong PC background. I think that's a perfectly legitimate stance.

What I don't understand is people giving unfair criticism of the game of even flat out refusing to play the game now because of that so-called betrayal on Remedy's/Microsoft's part. They are releasing the same game those people wanted to play, only with superior graphics, no sub-HD resolution or tearing. I think that's fantastic news, but, instead, some people just prefer to downplay the game's merits, nitpicking to no end, even without having played it. That's just sad.

I don't see how it can be a bad move. The game was released a year and a half ago. A PC release can only expand the audience for the next AW installments, both of which might probably end up being exclusive Xbox titles.

Maybe, just MAYBE, if this release does well it might mean someone at Take-Two will float the idea of Red Dead Redemption on PC up... I'd take a shitty R* port at this point.

Oh I understand that, but as far as sheer xbox360 exclusives go, MS is really fucking the pooch on this one IMO.

With the libraries as big as they are now, they don't really matter. The vast majority of people buy consoles to play 3rd party games.

Yes but having some exclusives can help increase hardware sales(Halo) thus having some exclusives is never a bad thing.

Red Dead Redemption 2012?! Please?

Considering the mess that was L.A. Noire, I cant see this happening at all. I think Rockstar is done with PC gaming. I wouldn't be surprised if Max Payne 3 for the PC ends up being utter shit as well.

Watering those PC mouths, make AW2 exclusive for loop. :)

Indeed.

Even more apparent with Kinectimals on iOS, feels like they're winding down their output on the 360 and concentrating on building awareness for their first party IPs until Xbox 3 arrives.

Nobody is buying a 360 for Alan Wake in 2012, so releasing it on PC is just money in the bank.

Love how suddenly people are excited for the game after going out of their way to trash it previously.

Delta, with Fable 3, Gears of War and Halo 2, this isn't the first time MS have done this. it didn't cause any harm with those titles and it won't cause harm with this.

Is the Stream reg entry basically a confirmation or were there cases where an entry appeared, but the game never game out?

Final Fantasy VII and VIII were added like a year and a half ago and never showed up, but generally if it's added to the registry it's basically 99% confirmed.

Valve has renamed all of the registry entries dealing with Alan Wake to VTA108710, so I guess that wasn't supposed to be revealed yet.

What's the point if we already know?

They needed one of these:

Thanks.

Then I guess those games are the exception, because the PC ports are really bad and the games are not resolution independent (max 640x480 for 7 and max 800x600 for 8, I think), due to the pre-rendered backgrounds.

I already own it on the 360, but I wouldn't say no to a higher resolution version of Alan Wake (with crappy, Bink encoded FMV that looks like shit upscaled to 1680 x 1050). But I'll wait for a Steam Sale unless this launches at $15.

Also Saw II is in the Steam registry and has a profile in the nvidia drivers for like a year now, but obviously it's never coming. Not anymore.

But I'm pretty sure this will come.

I do not believe this is being published or funded by Microsoft, since this is under "Remedy Comp" instead of "Microsoft Comp." Remedy probably self-funded the development of this port.

Yeah I'm pretty sure they just thought the games were too much trouble to get working on modern PCs.

It's probably Saw 11 based on the upcoming movie. ;)

I think they are important to help build the base but by this time they don't matter as much. The best thing about exclusives late in the gen is all the money they make selling software and putting a game on PC to make it non exclusive won't hurt that.

Once next gen starts then I think exclusives become a huge deal again.

I have the 360 limited edition.
I got to about 70% of the story, before the 360 died, but what i played was extremely fucking boring and repetitive.
I might give it another shot if it gets cheap on PC, though, because there was some good in there, i'm sure.

I hope this is Alan Wake's American Nightmare as I've already played Alan Wake on the 360 and it sorta burned me out on it.

I see. The reason I asked is that Meisadragon and Derrick01 are literally the only other two people who brought up the open-world aspect.

Anyway, I hope this arrives sooner than later and includes the DLC. If this were (almost) any other game I'd feel burnt, having recently bought the X360 CE.

WTF?

You can actually play those games you know. It isn't as if they exist only for people to list them.

He's arguing that PS36Wii exclusives are not important to the system they're particular to, given how late we are into the current generation of hardware.

I've heard this "repetitive" complaint several times reading impressions about AW. What makes it so? Repetitiveness is like my biggest pet peeve in games because I just stop playing and it's wasted money.

whoops, I meant to put this as an edit in the above post!

It's repetitive in the same way the Max Payne games were repetitive. Outside of the story bits, there isn't much to the game aside from combat. There is a little wiggle room in the environments for hidden items and collectibles, but for the most part it's a linear jaunt from enemy encounter to enemy encounter. It's definitely fun, but there's not a whole lot of variation so I can see why someone would feel that way.

Please sell better on PC than on 360. That might help Microsofts outlook on the platform.

Heh, it didn't do so hot on 360 but I can't see it selling better on PC, especially when considering it's almost two years old. Still, I would certainly like to see it happen. Remedy are one of my favorite devs so I hate to miss out on their games just cuz I don't have an Xbox.

Yeah, I thought the 360 sales were pretty poor (unfortunately). It should have longer legs on PC surely? The hardcore PC crowd are a loyal bunch, and the Remedy name no doubt means more to them than the average 360 gamer. At the right price... it could be possible.

Please?!

It will be profitable at the very least I'm guessing. The thing about releasing on Steam is that you've effectively guaranteed the eternal long-tail even if you don't sell a million copies right away.

I think it will sell more on pc. it only sold 1 million on 360 and with steam sales I think it can sell more on pc.

Recent reports peg the game at ~1.5m sold, but the vast majority of those would have been at bomba price.

As JJB suggested, if the game is a good port and priced attractively, the potential is there for it to do well on Steam.

I could be wrong, but if I remember correctly, a site did a comparison of texture quality between AW and Max Payne 2 resulting in some pretty sad "advances" by Remedy.

I'd be cautious about getting too excited on the image quality on the port.

Played the game + all the DLC last year.

Have absolutely no interest whatsoever in double dipping on the PC version. Very mediocre game with completely nonsensical story. But good news for those who've always wanted to play it and don't have 360's I guess.
