Super Meat Boy |OT|

Alright so I picked this up during the XBL sale and thought I would give it a go seeing how much hype this game got on GAF and other sites. I finished it in 2 sittings with 1045 deaths and I have to say it is one of the worst games I have ever played. Everyone talks about the tight controls when in fact they are insanely floaty and inprecise, as well as extremely inconsistent. Sometimes jump doesn't work, sometimes you go too far when you lightly press the button or not far enough even when you are holding it down. The hitboxes on death objects are also really inconsistent, you will find that on some objects part of your body can be touching the object and you will be fine, on others there can be a clear gap and you will die, this is especially noticeable in moving objects where the range seems to be different every time. The level design is pretty terrible as well with some levels seeming to be based more on luck than skill. So do yourself a favour and don't buy this unpolished turd of a game, I regret spending the 600 points on it.

Serious question, did you rage quit before you wrote this?

I only ask because I've had all these kinds of things planned out in my head to say on the internet when I was really pissed off at this game. But it was just that I was pissed. On your points though all I can agree on is that on very rare occasion the hitboxes can seem a bit inconsistent, and there are indeed rare wall jump glitches.

Decided to play some more of this since I saw this on the front page. FINALLY got The Kid! Was able to 100% the rest of world 3 which I didn't plan on doing so that's good. Still need to finish all of the dark worlds... Game gets so tough in the last two areas.

Does anyone else here have this annoying "CFX" overlay when playing Super Meat Boy? The game crashes on me occasionally too.

Have you played through Super Meat Boy using the Analog Stick OR the Digipad?

I recently had a debate with someone arguing about how important it is that you still support the Digipad in a 2d platformer (even though the analog stick was perfect in Meat Boy), because a lot of people won't ever get used to using an analog stick in a 2d game. I'd love to know how GAF sees it.

1) This is the first I've ever seen a d-pad be called a digipad.

2) It depends. On a 360 controller, the analog stick is better than the d-pad, so I used it for SMB. I switched to a new Logitech controller with a better d-pad recently, so I use that now for most 2D games. I even went back and tested it a bit with SMB and found the d-pad superior.

God yes. Jesus, that's the only way to make the game playable. Sorry if you didn't know that. There's a cfg file in the Meat Boy folder that's extremely easy to understand. I personally changed them to z and x

I honestly don't know who thought shift and space was a good idea.

I started working on unlocking The Kid last night. After probably 500 deaths I actually managed to beat the first level. But jesus mother of christ, I cannot pass that 3rd elevator in the second level. I don't know what it is about the timing, but the second or third spike always kills me.

So here's my question: Is there seriously no way to save warp zone progress? I mean for other people that have unlocked The Kid, did you just leave your computer on with SMB running on the pause screen for 3 weeks straight so that you didn't have to restart from the first level of the warp zone again?

I completed every lightworld level including cotton alley and unlocked the kid with a keyboard on default controls.
 
Does anyone else have a problem with the colors being different when in full screen? I'm not even sure how to fix this.

Check what color scheme your monitor is using. My projector fucked everything up (green meat boy, everything is black, etc.) until I changed it from RGB to CMYK.
 
I was wondering why this game doesn't have Steam cloud support for the saves? Of all my Steam games it's probably the save file that would hurt the most to lose. I take it it's no trivial matter implementing it if they didn't do it yet.

Well it wasn't that bad, I suppose everything just seemed a little darker. Like the green A button on the screen when I use my controller was yellow. And when I put it back to windowed mode it looks just fine.

Who knows. It has Steam Cloud on Windows, but not Mac which makes NO FUCKING SENSE. Seriously. And how it's gone this far without an update to add it in is really confusing.

Umm. It doesn't have Steam Cloud on Windows.

Also, I posted a hackish solution for putting cloud support yourself a few pages back. it involves making a dropbox account and doing some Windows magic to make SMB always save directly to your DropBox folder

I cant jump..... I sometimes am able to jump ONCE if I really, really mash the jump, but that it is it... :(

That's the only level that's a problem though? Are you using a gamepad and/or gamepad keyboard emulator?

360 controller. But the thing is, that it works perfetly on every other level. Once I open the world 1 boss, I am stuck in the bloody mud, not being able to jump, only go left and right. Insane. o_O

The whole idea behind it being a three level set is to do it one sitting. My advice on Kid2 would be don't over think the movements to avoid the spikes, just time a rhythm in your mind and you'll eventually get it. You'll never beat it if you "think" about it, as strange as that sounds.

After saying this anybody notice the 2 new achievements? Talk about the Kid's warpzone being hard!

My mistake. I swore it did. But still, I can't believe it doesn't. I'm going to try that DropBox thing with the Hard Links in OS X and Windows. Question, which folder on each OS do I need to link to? (I'm very familiar with using hard links and DropBox for syncing. I use it to sync my Minecraft saves and in conjunction with Hazel to organize and move downloaded files from my MacBook to my Mac mini server. /explanabrag) I've looked in Steam's Library folder and it's a horrible mess of unstandardized folders. Some games are in a standard location, others throw their files willy nilly. Horrible implementation of a sandbox. I can't locate the file SMB uses for save data.

After beating 2 though, it's like being on the last level of Contra and your mom telling you it's time for school. It's like "FUCK YOU I'M ON THE LAST LEVEL OF CONTRA, DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT THAT MEANS?!"

Just curious, are people hacking achievements in this game? Looking at the leaderboards and lots of people get like 5 or 6 trophies at a time, or get all the "complete X world without dying" trophies within 3 minutes of each other.
 
I'm thinking of making a trainer for SMB. I really want some of those achievements so I think that if I can create something to unlock them, I deserve them. Seems more ethical than downloading one off the net.

There have been a lot of people hacking achievements for this, it's lame. But like you said it's easy to spot.

In any case, how did you even find out about these levels and that these are part of the Kids Xmas level pack? Was there an announcement somewhere?

Also, this is the first time I've gone into Super Meat World. What an atrocious UI, I can't believe for a game that is so otherwise polished, they let this garbage dump of a UI make it in the game.

Using the above path as a starting point I found it. For some weird reason they put the save files INSIDE the Application Bundle. Inside the "common/super meat boy" folder is an app named "SuperMeatBoy.app" which has the save files inside the "/Contents/MacOS/UserData" folder contained within.

I assume I could put a SymLink inside the application package, but I'm wondering how Steam updates Mac apps. Will it replace just the binary inside the SuperMeatBoy.app package? I assume so since it is able to update an app without removing its save files, but still. I'll give it a shot and report my findings. I just need to Google how to make a symlink on Windows.

Personally if I were Valve, I would have used a more organized structure for its service.

I found out through the Steam forums, there's a thread about it. Apparently Edmund was supposed to be uploading a "chapter" with these level but hasn't yet. But those are the 5 included.

And yeah the UI in Super Meat World sucks, but you do get used to it after a while.

Already got it with MKLINK in the Command Prompt program. It works perfectly. I tested the game on both sides and it synced them back with no problems.

MKLINK /D C:\SymLink_Location C:\DropBox_Save_Folder_Location

When I had Portal installed, it put its files all over the root of the Steam folder instead of all in one centralized location. It was a mess. I uninstalled it temporarily to free up space and clean it all up, but I wonder if it'll put it back there next time I install it.

Anyway, the Mac version is still terrible. I played the World 2 boss on both versions and the Mac version, while letting Meat Boy run at normal speed was executing the scripts at half speed. I grabbed the key and started climbing before the boss even jumped out of the blood and died because it was off screen. And this was with -fullscreen -lowdetail -1280x720 set as the runtime options. Fucking hell. I could program a less laggy game in Lua if I had to.
 
(SMB is on OSX now? Maybe I should redownload it and check it out again...)

I picked this up a looong while back for $2.50, been playing it on and off this past semester.

It's pretty impressive (all the more so that it was done by just two guys, and with such attention to detail), but I can't say I really loved it, especially in comparison to similar games of the time, like VVVVVV.

I feel like SMB eschews a lot of genuine originality/novelty for the sake of hardcore platforming and skill based challenges. Most levels aren't too terribly interesting or memorable to me in a gameplay sense, and yet they feel incredibly tight and balanced, if that makes sense. To me, it feels like the game has a high emphasis on difficulty/competition to justify itself. Like, when approaching level design, Team Meat asked, "How can we make this level challenging with plenty of depth to reward those with the most skill and investment in our game?" as opposed to, "How can we make this level fun and interesting and explore the full range and of our gameplay frontier?"

I'm definitely not going to claim that sort of approach is bad, it's just not for me. My favorite levels were those that did something new or unique, like the one in hell with the lasers at the bottom half where you had to go up and down to block the lasers behind the barriers, or the introduction of portals, the repulsion balls, etc. However, these sorts of mechanics seemed too far and few between, and they almost always felt subservient to maintaining a sense of challenge/accomplishment. This is in contrast to, say, the aforementioned VVVVVV where each level/sub-world introduced a really interesting core idea or twist on the main mechanic while still maintaining a good sense of challenge/accomplishment (I'm still proud of doing Veni Vedi Vici XP).

All that said, SMB was definitely one of the better titles released last year, and I'm glad I played it... but I'm also glad I didn't pay full price for it.

(I'm actually enjoying The Binding of Isaac much more than SMB atm...)

never really played this type of game before.

having alot of trouble with my accuracy of my jumping. always overshoot or undershoot. it's really frustrating to me.

and i'm only on the world 2 boss. i guess these types of games are just too hard for me. i will keep trying for a bit though. i've seen some of the later levels and i'm having trouble with these i should give up, heh.

i can see why people really like this game now though.
