3DS: GBA Ambassador games are revealed and up in all regions

lol - Ok. You see how well I payed attention to the whole process.

Edit: When you tell me what I had to do, I now remember doing it. But in my mind, I keep thinking I had to log-on to a website and put in my 3DS serial number to ensure that I was an ambassador, and that's how I registered.

That was just a way for neurotic people to check and be 100% sure they were registered.
I've never played a Kirby game.

Are they all this fucking amazing?

Fighter Kirby FTW! LOL

Well, most of them aren't Metroidvania games. :p But yeah, they're all pretty great. It's a solid series

I finished Kirby Mass Attack today (Best Kirby game! Come at me!) I decided to go with something light, so I started Mario vs Donkey Kong. I'm three worlds in right now out of 6, and am enjoying this game as a spiritual successor to Donkey Kong '94. A couple things bug me though. First of all are the graphics. Why does the game have to look so ugly? Pre Rendered sprites yuck. I forgot about this phase Nintendo was in on the SNES. Also, the presentation feels like amateur hour. Is this the NST developed game? Would explain why the cut scenes to tell the story are so terrible.

Despite this, the game is extremely fun to play. Doesn't look to be too long though. I'm halfway through the game in one hour and thirteen minutes according to my activity log. No big deal, though. I can move onto something else after I finish this game!

Pre-rendered sprites are hideous and Nintendo really should have known that by the time Mario vs. Donkey Kong came out.

The game sounds terrible, too. The music is pretty inoffensive, but the sound effects are awful. They're those cheapass stock sound effects you hear in low budget games when the developers forgot until the last second that they would have to put sound effects in their game.

Actually, I just played a cheapass brain training game because I was reviewing it, and some of the sound effects from Mario vs. Donkey Kong are in it. Like that stupid sound they use when DK crams himself into a keyhole. Ugh.

Despite the atrocious presentation, though, Mario vs. Donkey Kong is a pretty good game. Too bad it wasn't a Game Boy Color game. It probably would have looked at sounded better.

So. The Minish Cap is definitely one of my favorite Zelda games.

I love everything about it. Also, replaying it, you really do see how Skyward Sword is practically a remake of it. My biggest disappointment with Skyward Sword was that Skyloft did not have nearly as much stuff to do in it as Hyrule Town in The Minish Cap.

Agreed. I can't stand the audio in this game at all, they irritate me so much. And the graphics are indeed fugly but I can deal with those. Mario VS DK is still fun thankfully like you said.

I just completed my first ambassador game, WarioWare. I know it's short but I had a blast playing it. I've never tried the games in the series but now I'm very interested in them and will try to get my hands in some of them.

Wario Ware's not short at all, assuming you want to unlock everything...

I had my first bullshit moment with Sacred Stones today. A named character I was attempting not to kill got my Lord with a 20% chance to hit move, crit'd, and instantly murdered her.

Fuck.

Why do most of the GBA games look like absolute shit on the 3DS screen?

It's a joke if you compare it too, say, playing the games on a GBA SP.

I think they look much better using an actual backlit system instead of the front illumination that the SP used. (though I think they eventually did make a backlit SP 2-3 years after the initial launch of the SP after an internal revision which I never bought, so I can't really speak for that because i've never owned a backlit SP, just the frontlit one).

the backlight SP is a godsend. best way to play GBA games. none of the other systems capable of playing GBA games come close.
original is lol worthy but comfortable. old SP looks very bad after using the backlight SP, GBmicro is too small, GBPlayer lacks a good controller unless you use a GBA, DSphat and DSlite aren't very optimal and 3DS has weird brightness and some text looks iffy (i noticed when playing warioware and trying to read some minigame descriptions)

i decided to run a live test of the brightness settings of all the GBA-capable handhelds with light capabilities to see how the 3DS stacks against them for playing the Ambassador games.
the results are interesting but sorta predictable:

first, the tools used:

1x GBASP
1x GBASP+
1x GBMicro
1x DSphat
1x DSlite
1x 3DS (with Ambassador games)

the game in question had to be a game that was within the ambassador games and that i had enough copies to run at the same time. while i have 3 copies of Mario Kart SC, that's not enough, but then i remembered the Mario Advance line has the mario bros minigame added as the multiplayer game and YI has it since it was part of that line. coupled with the fact i own the entire Mario Advance line and have 2 copies of YI GBA, i could display the same game screen on all 6 systems at the same time to make the comparison the most fair possible.

1x Super Mario Advance
1x Super Mario Advance 2
2x Super Mario Advance 3
1x Super Mario Advance 4

all the systems were set top the highest bightness setting possible
GBASP+ has 2 levels
DSlite has 4 levels
3DS has 5 levels

in the end, this is what could be seen:

first, with flash just to see who's who.

P1010588.jpg

directly from above.

P1010591.jpg

from an angle.

it looks better in real life, but the idea can be seen.
the brightest machine is still the GBASP+, followed by the DSlite.
the 3DS is about on par with the GBMicro.
the DSphat looks quite bad and the original SP is dead last.

the original GBA and the GBPlayer weren't used because they're too different.
the DSi and DSiXL don't have the GBA slot to use the games.

hopefully this is helpful for people to see what they're getting (or missing) with the GBA ambassador games in the 3DS system.
personally, it depends on what game i want to play because, for example, warioware is easily played on 3DS but F-Zero MV causes massive grip issues if i want to do advanced strategies.

GBASP+ and DSlite look overly bright. Micro and 3DS look perfect.

I think the GBA games look pretty decent on the 3DS. They don't bother me at all, and the colors are very nice.

Many/most DS games, though, are horrible in fullscreen mode. Check out the DS Download Play screen sometime if you want a painful and obvious demonstration.

On the other hand, they're not TOO tiny at original resolution, whereas the GBA games are just too small at original res.

Super Mario Advance 1-4 and...M&L Superstar Saga?. Are there any more that come with Mario Bros Classic?

So the games actually look best on the 3DS?
I did think some of you guys were over exaggerating honestly.....
You guys really need to see them with your naked eyeball. The pics will give you an idea of comparative brightness, but they all look noticeably brighter here than they do in real life. The 3DS looks slightly dimmer than a modern screen should with the GBA titles, and there is also the exaggerated motion blur. The GBA SP+ really is the sweet spot with the brightness, and I figure Nintendo thought so too when they designed it. If anyone considers it too bright it does have a lower brightness setting that is a hair lower than the 3DS.

I honestly don't feel the brightness with the 3DS is unplayable or even that bad (the d-pad + buttons do not get a pass though). It is just odd that Nintendo would make the GBA games intentionally dimmer than other games on the 3DS in an effort to mimic the old GBA hardware, and also odd that they wouldn't try to mimic their most perfected iteration of that hardware. I can admire their efforts of purism, but it clearly should have been a toggled option like the green screen in OG Gameboy VC titles.

The GBA games' brightness weirdness is different from old dim GBAs, too. The backlight isn't the difference (I think), they are intentionally screwing with the brightness/contrast of the actual screen rendering. And that's just wrong.

Technically speaking, it's actually correct. The games are designed to be displayed on a screen with low brightness/contrast/colour gamut (i.e the original GBA screen). Playing it on a GBAsp backlit version or a DS Lite is technically screwing with the intended colour output of these games.

But you know, they should've included options and all that...

Nope, "just" those 5 games (he obviously has a double of one of them for making this picture)

I still don't get how people think the GBA and DS games look blurry on the 3DS...
They look perfectly fine to me.
The colors on some of the GBA games I can see, but not the blurriness.

They ARE blurry. Unless you enable the 1:1 mode on 3ds, the image is stretched and blurred.

Yep, the double is the Ambassador Yoshi's Island on the 3DS.

And nevermind on the question, the games used were in the post, which I should've read more carefully. I guess there were two hard copies of Yoshi's Island and no M&L Superstar Saga.

Oh, what do you know. The third area in The Minish Cap requires you to run across Quick Sand. Skyward Sword and The Minish Cap are the exact same game! Expect TMC is better.

It's very obvious that MC, SS and the DS games have the same team working on them. They share way too many tropes.

minish cap is still the best game anyway

i could have used M&L since i have it but i completely forgot it came with the mario bros. game.

I dug out my old DS Lite a few days ago and was a little blown away by how bright it actually is. I just placed the Mario Bros title screens side by side with my GBA SP+ and found the DS Lite noticeably brighter, which has me paranoid that my SP+ isn't operating as it should. Are you sure your Lite wasn't brighter than your SP+, or that you had your Lite on its brightest setting? I hope there is nothing wrong with mine, these are tricky to track down.
