It had to be redesigned, its one of the ugliest electronic devices of recent years. There was no effort made to make the original look attractive.

People should be pointing and laughing at it rather than buying it.

Their efforts focused squarely on its money printing abilities I guess.

That at least took 15 months to be released. This is probably coming next month.

What? A product that has not been officially announced or even hinted at is launching next month?

Seriously, it's more likely to be later than that, assuming (fairly, to be honest) that this is legitimate.

And seriously, BurntPork, this is in no way a surprise. You have not been scammed in any way, shape or form.

Those reliable rumors were from Nikkei News (Japanese Newspaper)

While this time it is Nikkei Trendy
http://trendy.nikkeibp.co.jp/

It seems like it is a casual magazine though from the same company.
I can't think of any proven rumor particular from this magazine.

Yeah, Nikkei Trendy is a monthly magazine mainly for businessmen that covers a variety of markets/products and the latest trends. So they cover a broad base of issues; one issue had an article about speed dating, to give you an idea.

Nikkei and Nikkei Trendy are both part of the same publisher. But Nikkei is the daily newspaper while Nikkei Trendy is a magazine they're running.

I don't think it's attractive, but it's inoffensive. Just looks like a DS Lite.

I don't know how to feel about this.

I just bought a 3DS and think it's awesome, but the battery is awful. I would love for a sexier, longer-lasting 3DS to exist... but so soon? Ambassador#2 : P

This news (or, rumour) is awesome but i don't feel like i've gotten the value i want out of the original model yet.

battery life could be nice, though playing with the settings on mine improved that. not sure how much thinner i'd want it, but if it brought a bigger screen, i'd be interested.
not gonna easily give up my zelda edition one, though!

It's a HUGE surprise for it to come so soon. June should have been the absolute earliest for it to come. Doing this after its first holiday is a scam, and this is coming from someone who got the DS Phat but didn't even flinch when the DS Lite was announced.

That said, with my big fat hands, I'm not sure if I could handle a thinner unit...

Lol So how are they going to fit a better battery in the already packed 3DS with it being thinner?

They could reduce the power consumption rather than making the battery bigger, although I think it may be too early for major strides in that area.

To be honest, I'd be more interested in a 3DS XL than a Lite. That 3D screen is too small!

I was secretly hoping that Nintendo read into initial slow sales as some people waiting it out for a 3DS Lite and decided that it wasn't in their best interest to keep remaking their hardware.

Oh well. If this is aesthetics and longer battery, I'll stick with my current 3DS.

If it adds an analog stick and some other stuff that might be standard, I'll probably trade up. My only problem is that I would normally trade in my current system towards the new one. But with the way their transfer system is, I'd need both systems in my possession.

Anyway, I don't see this launching this year against the Wii U, but I could be wrong.

Parent company has no relation to the validity of one of the individual companies' reputation. Many newspapers and magazines are owned by big conglomerates.

The Spartanburg Herald-Journal doesn't have the same credibility or reputation as the NY Times just because they are owned by the same parent company.

I didn't imply they did.

No it's not. And I rather play all the awesome games on it than laugh at it. 3DS deserves support, if only because it has some real good games on it.

great, thinner. I was worried my early onset arthritis wouldn't be early enough. Thinner 3DS should speed it up.

all my electronics must be the equivalent of an anorexic super model. functionality be damned.

If you read the Iwata Asks on the physical design you'll see that the opposite is in fact true - if anything they spent way too much time thinking and philosophising about how it should look.

I don't think Nintendo ever intended to lose money on the 3DS for long, especially with the Wii U coming up. So if they can produce this thing cheaper and price it at $189 or so because it's a new machine and at least break even they'd rather do that than keep selling the current models at significant loss.

We have absolutely no confirmation that this is coming for months. The DS Lite has heavily rumoured for months before it was actually announced and released.

There is absolutely nothing to say that this is launching before June.

I was (and still am) hoping for the first revision to be a 3DSXL, but it'll be interesting if this is true. Edit: I suppose "thinner" doesn't equal "smaller" so the two might not be exclusive...

Nintendo is always working on new devices, especially redesigns of their handhelds. I'm more interested in when they plan on releasing it.

They could have waited another six months.

Nikkei recent rumors have been way off.

What about Fire Emblem DLC and installing games to 3DS internal memory? Still waiting.

Now they are calling a 3DS Lite and Monster Hunter Vita, are we sure this isn't a prediction edition? LOL

The "installing games" story wasn't Nikkei.

The Fire Emblem DLC story was Nikkei, but I'm not sure why you're "still waiting". Still waiting for what? The release of Fire Emblem 3DS?

I kind of wonder if they purposely made the 3DS run less efficiently just so they could improve battery life with their revision.

Agreed. I would not be at all inclined to purchase a smaller 3DS; that thing is almost too small as is. A bigger one, with a bigger screen and a bigger battery... that's something that would prompt an upgrade.

Things like this have inertia. They didn't know how sales were going to respond this fall. So it made sense to have a new model hitting as early as 2012 as possible. Yet, you don't want any info releasing before the holiday 2011 to fulfill some self-doom prophecy. So you keep everything under wraps until it's over. This isn't confirmed in the least, but smart money was always on a January reveal/leak, with launch by March. It was business 101 and visible from a mile away.

If they do a 3DSXL I hope they have major WiiU connectivity wired in there

DS Lite was announced in January, it's the Nintendo way once Christmas sales have been had.

February/March release seems likely, before the end of their financial year.

And for people saying they were robbed, it's almost the same as the DS Lite. Give or take a few months, the DS Lite was announced a year after the release of the original DS too (a year and 3-4 months, I think).

Sweet, now I can start saving for a 3DS.

Also, with regards to a thinner model, surely an added analogue slider would provide a bit of extra width to allow the thickness to be reduced slightly?

This would only bother me if it came with a 2nd stick built in.

The 3DS is pretty light and compact already, I can't see the benefit of making it any lighter or more compact.

If it's thinner, wider, has a bigger screen and a second slider built in I'm in.
Though this rumour should be taken with a grain of salt of course, despite a redesign being inevitable.

I'm wondering if they changed the design, hopefully they did and it'll tie in with the new(?) Wii U design like the DS Lite did before the Wii came out.

we can only hope that is the case here
they may as well do this early leaving the OG 3DS behind like a bad memory
