The PlayStation Vita In 2011-2012

How come I've never seen this page before?
http://www.jp.playstation.com/psvita/special/attractions/social/

Anyway, in addition to flickr, Nico Nico and Twitter, we should be getting Skype, Facebook and Foursquare apps in the not too distant future. I guess YouTube isn't gonna happen after the Google buyout.
You really didn't see that before?
I'm kind of bummed that Skype didn't make it to the release, as it's the only one from this bunch I plan on using on my Vita. Well, except for Twitter to upload pictures, but I guess I'll go with flickr from now on.

Yeah, Skype will be awesome.
I'm kind of bummed about apps turning off network functionality though.

Star Strike Delta:
1. Loads game
2. Connects to PlayStation Network
3. Downloads high scores of your friends
4. Start Game
5. Turns off Network Functionality
6. End Game
7. Connects to PSN
8. Uploads high score

WTF

Yeah, it's a pretty big bummer. Hopefully this is just a launch game problem while devs learn the system.

Otherwise I am REALLY enjoying SSD, just as addictive as the PS3 game. Got up to the last planet and got my ass handed to me.

The Verge has a video up of the flickr app. Pretty much what you'd expect.

http://www.theverge.com/2012/1/19/2717877/flickr-playstation-vita-hands-on-video

Like the Twitter app LiveTweet, Flickr for Vita is a solid way to access the service, but falls short when it comes to integrating the Vita's features for a truly native experience. Aside from the way it uses the Vita's own cameras for uploads, it doesn't seem to do much to leverage the PlayStation Network, which could be a viable upgrade path for the future. That said, in lieu of a native iPad app it might well become our preferred way to use Flickr on the go — the Vita's screen makes for a more attractive photo-viewing experience than any smartphone we're yet to come across.

Yeah, it's amazing.
I like the changes — moving down to two weapons and getting rid of the regular one makes gameplay much more streamlined. Also, the music for the boss battles is insanely good. I've only played it about an hour, and got to the second boss, but I'm clearly going to be as hooked as I was to the PS3 game.

Between this and Wipeout, Vita has some serious contenders for Kickass music of the Year.

(i got Wipeout 2048 retail - oh my .... booooooooing)

for strange people that buy from PSN *and* retail, how does it handle save games? Do they both work off a single save game and trophy list?

Its a bit of an edge case I guess, but you could buy physical and then later decide to buy from PSN, so will save games continue or restart?

anyone tried Flickr on a US account?

and is this the Japan thread now or are we using the US one? Very confusing.

I would rather this thread stay the owners thread as the other thread is full of what people have preordered...

Depends on the game. If the game saves to the game card, no, you can't transfer it once you download it from PSN. But if it saves on the Vita, the save data should be the same.

Well, I guess that's the case. The US thread is kind of meh because of the amount of the Vita preorder talk. Too bad the original one got closed because of 2 pages of offtopic in a 135 page long thread...

Flickr app should be great with the big screen and all. Sony is going a good job getting apps on the vita, bodes well for its future usefulness as a multimedia device.

Speaking of audio, Develop had an interview a few days ago with the guy who headed up the audio group for Vita:

http://www.develop-online.net/features/1513/Heard-About-PS-Vita

He tries to make a comparison with PS3's audio capabilities.

Will it deliver PS3 quality audio? In terms of fidelity and scope?

It really depends what PS3 games with which you want to compare the audio capabilities of PS Vita and NGS. But the goal was to allow our own WWS PS3 titles to work on PS Vita with minimum changes.

In terms of power, games process hundreds of audio channels, as well as processing high quality reverbs, etc.

We consider that a "game voice" would have resampling, volume changing, filter and some kind of codec decoding all being active.

So when I say that NGS can process hundreds of audio channels, I mean real "game voice" audio channels.

The main audio difference is obviously that it's a portable unit with stereo output, rather than full-fat 7.1. But in terms of fidelity, I'd say it's up with that of PS3, and in terms of scope, I think that the synth design is actually more flexible, allowing for wider opportunities for creativity than that of PS3 in the longer term.

Of course, PS3 is a home console. It plugs into the mains and has a fan to keep it from overheating! PS Vita is a portable, battery powered unit and as such, you have to be sensible when making comparisons between the two.

I see it like this: if you used the whole PS3 to do something amazing with audio (whatever that would be), then yes, PS3 delivers more.

But if you consider what resources are normally available for game audio on a home console (memory, CPU use, DSPs), then without a doubt, PS Vita can deliver to that level.

Does PS Vita redefine portable audio? I think so, yes. If I look at current portable devices, their audio capabilities are around 15 years behind that of home consoles.

So, comparing the audio capabilities of PS Vita to other portables on the market (be that of mobile phones or other game orientated devices), PS Vita audio is a staggering achievement.

It’s easy to forget this during development, when your target is to try to ensure that it delivers the power that developers expect on PS3.

But I honestly believe that PS Vita will deliver an audio experience that has never been heard before on a portable device.

Yeah, it redefines it all right - I don't think there's ever been a handheld in which you held thumbs right above the speakers, muting them in the process.

Someone really does need to step forward and explain why they closed that thread. The off topic junk was dead when the thread got the lock, and there hasn't been a US or EU launch thread to replace it. Heck, the Japanese 3DS launch thread is still open, with the last post in June!

I was at Future Shop earlier today when the Sony rep walked in with a Vita. I tried it for a bit and one thing I immediately noticed was its weight. It was surprisingly light compared to the first PSP and maybe even the PSP-3000 (don't have one with me anymore). Besides that, I am not sure what else to think, he had no games so I only played the mini-game with the gyro controls (skateboard). Still not convinced to pick this up at launch, will get a Vita-2000 for sure though.

I PM'd one of the mods and he basically told me that it was because of the offtopic.

WiFi model weights 260 grams, while PSP-3000 weights 189 grams.

Edit:
Bah, sorry for the double, thought someone wrote a post after my previous one, don't know why.

I make Twentytwo22 work on my garden for peanuts! Work it baby!
He's a useless level 1 worker. :(
Let's share PSNs (if I don't have you yet, so many random people on the friend list ><), so we can become each others Minna to issho slaves.
Niiro-Matsuki here.

That's "Dr." dofry to you.
Sent a request. Edit: Oh, and I know he is bad, that's why I like "punishing" for an hour just for being so lazy. Others finish in 5 minutes what he has to dig for an hour.

I am considering getting Wipeout but I already have four games, and three I haven't finished.

I always wondered why there never was PS3 Toro Station outside of Japan. Toro is a nice mascot and this game is nice too. Kind of addicting to build these gardens and parks.

I guess west will not get this, but they should. Minna to issyo should be a launch game.

Toro has starred in video games since the PS1. Sony has never touched a single one in the west, and in fact has had his cameo appearances in other games removed in the past.

I've been playing lots of Minna to Issho, I'm like Level 49 or something :p 'gaspode_t'

I actually gave tons of MP to Kylecities so you should be pimped already. Toro Station is awesome, might be hard if you aren't fluent in Japanese...

You need 33 friends to unlock the power spot zone...with only 5 new friends per day it's pretty slow going to get that high

Where are you getting friends from?
Are you adding random people within the application to your PSN friends list?
I get shitloads of invites, but I generally don't like to add people who I don't know, and even if I did, I would never get up to 100 Minna to Issho friends, without having my existing friends play it.

The Toro app friends and the PSN friends are separate. While exchanging name cards with others allows you to also add them as friends on PSN that is purely optional. You'll have to confirm friends request from within the Toro app however if you ignore the PSN friends request.

The limit is 10 per day actually. The hard part is after exchanging name cards you need to wait for them to confirm the friends request...

My PSN name is saintajola feel free to add me.

It's like 50 seconds long for a fresh track... hopefully the retail version has shorter load times.
But the demo has 28 second load time.
Retail version loading times are about the same lenght, sadly.
Ouch, guess I better get back to minna to issho :D
You better do. :(
Just like Gaspode, I gave you tons of jobs during the last week, so you should have a pretty good amount of MP by now.
Are the PSN vita game prices any better than retail?
500-1000 yen cheaper than the MSRP.

Sent a mail to the GAF support mail address, asking for the JP Launch thread to be reopened, we'll see if it works.
