Don't know if the game can be modded yet, but the past Civilizations have been moddable. I think IV and V both even have a mod-loader as part of the main menu. So based on Firaxis' track record, outlook is good.

I am looking forward to this, even if it's not a remake, but a re-imagining, it looks pretty nice. I get this "illegitimate lovechild of X-Com and Valkyria Chronicles" off it, and to me that's not a bad thing at all.

now here's a question I wanna ask

can we mod it
They haven't said. The odds are decent since it's Firaxis but the fact that it has a simultaneous console release might be a bad sign. Still, Bethesda manages with their games so maybe!

It would be SO GREAT to have an SDK for this game. Even if the game doesn't turn out exactly the way we'd like, it might even be fixable!

Looks great. I will buy this but I would still love an iOS port of the original with good touchscreen controls and bug fixes (graphics can stay the same).

I would love pretty much any port. Android, IOS, Windows (to not have to emulate DOS), even an Arcade game on 360/PSN would be great.

Can't you play the alpha? How's it? I've seen some videos and the AI seems to be nowhere to be found.

I've played a few of the alpha builds, however they were quite buggy and crashed multiple times. The bits I did play however, were quite fun and nostalgic, as you can see the influence that X-Com has in the game.

I've already got my pre-order linked to Desura, so I'm downloading the most recent build (just after the press-release version) to see what changes they've made since the last time I played it. I'm not sure if they've implemented the AI as yet, but if they have i'll let you know how it is.

update to my earlier post: Well, I just played a bit of the xenonauts press-release alpha available on Desura, and I do think they've added AI to the aliens (not sure how far along it is). I shot down a UFO and proceeded to send in my ground forces.

I came across my first alien at my second turn but he seemed to just run towards me. I killed it and proceeded to the alien craft. I saw two more but they also didn't attack me, so I assumed that AI was programmed only to run around. I dealt with those two and ended my turn, and I was promptly greeted by a blue beam coming out from the shadows which shot my sniper and as he crumpled to the ground I saw a fourth alien run out from the shadows towards my men. I could confirm that yes, there was indeed some sort of AI that was put into the game.

And then the game client froze. I can still move my mouse around, but I can't click on anything. The music is playing, i can hear clicking prompts when I try to choose something but other than that, it's not responding.

Still, it was great! I especially like the music. Really adds to the atmosphere. I wonder if they're going to have different pieces or if it will be similar to X-Com in only having a few sound bytes.

A few days old now, but didn't see it posted, the coverage continues with another video and screen, The Unsettling Music Of XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

It wouldn't be XCOM without a gas station or two!
I totally missed that all the earlier diner shots were named gas station

Glad to see they acknowledge the music was integral to making the game's creepy atmosphere.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Great choice of cover... I hope that's not actually viable in game... Is there any gameplay in the videos you mentioned?

Not so far, no gameplay video has been released yet. This is sorta how gas stations worked in the first game, I also hope the stations in the new game will carry some similarities in risk.

I can't wait to play this! I admit, the art style turned me off at first - until I remembered that we've already seen 'realistic' X-Com:

And that the reboot has a similar palette to the original:

Wait there are actual ex-Microprose guys that worked on past XCOM games working on this XCOM?

Oh man... I cannot wait for this game.

EDIT: I really cannot believe how many things they get right. It's like... I don't know... some higher up suit sat down and read all the massive amount of hate & bile the new XCOM FPS got thorought all the internet and tried to fix it.

I am simply AMAZED how good this game looks and sounds like (including lack of TUs, 4 people in the squad etc.)

Cyberdisc is fantastic, and I quite like what they've done with the Mutons. Will we be getting a full revamp of ALL the alien races, though - Floaters, Ethereals, Chrysalids etc.? That would be fantastic...

Oh I just assumed he was dancing, I'm not sure.

My guess is the first three maybe four are dodging animations, the next three are probably related to leaping or landing, I have no idea what the next one is looks like he is doing a cartwheel, then he is shooting, the last three are him getting shot. You can see the blood splatter.

Just a guess.

Oooh my heart is beating fast, looking at these shots. Oh man dat night time mission. Terror missions are going to be nightmare fuel.

Is he dodging bullets? Maybe it looks better with the ingame model.

Pretty sure those are all action shots, yes. A lot of varied dodge animations because their main advantage is that they are lithe and fast, hard to hit. Last three he's getting nailed and you can also see they are trying to find animations that also emphasize how flimsy/frail they are.

It would be cool if they were somewhat able to disguise themselves as normal civilians during terror missions.

There were metamorphic aliens in Abomination: the Nemesis Project (an rts), which appeared like normal humans, but suddendly turned into these slender aliens as soon as the player units got near enough.

X-Com agent: "Hei team, I've rescued another civil-"

One thing has been bothering me so, since you start with 4 members in a team and all these class roles and perks, I fear that Firaxis is making your soldiers way too valuable, as in they can take a lot of hits they can't die. What I liked the most about my troops in original game was that they were fragile, but things they've shown so far makes me think that you will be using those 4 for a while before you get any more troops.

Another pet peeve is one base policy. This can only mean there will be no random Base attacks against you (if you lose the base, game's over right? Can't happen!), unless it is a Story Mission specifically programmed to happen 100% of the time in each playthrough. (and so no problem regulating between science and manufacturing, no proper base building)

Kind of disappointing that Firaxis takes the original game and takes away good complexity out, when there is already a game for that mainstream audience

It fucking blows my mind for some reason.

While the one-base thing may not be a great idea in practice (no way to be sure yet), I don't see how it precludes random alien invasions. Hell, I remember OG X-Com invasions even before I expanded into multiple bases.

I'm totally on board with the 4 troop limit complaints though. I'd like reassurance that squad sizes can get significantly larger. ~12 troops or so.

I think we can forget about 12-people squads. IMO, based on nothing, there will be 8 people limit max that makes 4 people + 1 tank available.

There will be tanks in this game... right?

The news of the Firaxis game got me to finally try X-Com UFO Defense. Why the hell have I not played these games before!!! So much fun. 16 hours played now :)

Can't wait for this new one.

I just can't believe this game is being made by so many people who are as perfect for the task outside of the original creators. Even if it has lost a few systems, I'm all about being pragmatic. At the very least I'm getting a new game in a largely ignored genre.

The art is fine by me. It appears to fit between Enemy Unknown (GOAT) and Apocalypse (which I also liked.) I want Firaxis to run with their take on the game. In all the interviews I have seen they earned that leeway with me. Not that it matters.

Jesus..the more I read and see about the game the more excited I get.

If it gets good reviews I might even buy it day one and take a week off. The last time I did this was when GTA:SA came out.

That said, I'm going on a media blackout. Don't wanna spoil myself.

The devs have specifically and repeatedly stated that the challenge and perma-death in the original game are cornerstones of their design approach.
