The GiantBomb Quick Look Thread

Amy doesn't look like a good game, but people are giving it like, TWO out of ten. It doesn't seem THAT bad.

Maybe the tedium gets really bad or the mechanics just collapse in later chapters or something. Maybe expectations? I remember this game getting mild buzz upon announcement.

AMY seems like one of those games that's generally very tense and stressing to play, which I kind of think was the intention of the developer (with the exception of technical/budget issues).

People generally seemed accepting of Dark Souls because they were able to manage their expectations based on Demon's Souls. I feel like if AMY just had a giant screen popping up when you started it the first time that basically just said "yo, this shit is fuck'd up. Consider yourself warned if that's not your cup of tea", it would generally have fared a bit better.

Sometimes I just generally feel like a lot of the coverage in the video game industry seems to generally lack perspective and we end up with "this game doesn't behave like I thought it would/am used to, obviously this is the fault of the games developers!". This was especially the case for Castlevania HD, which delivered (and excellently so) a very specific and 'weird' experience, but because it wasn't just a metroidvania game in style with the DS games, it was pretty unanimously declared 'shit' with a lot of the reviews actually containing factual errors about the games mechanics and systems (which were all almost perfectly explained in the games in-game manual, which it seems nobody who actually reviewed the game actually read/understood).

I'm generally not very surprised that this has become such a squeal driven industry/FPS extravaganza, when people seem so disinterested in investing themselves in a new and original experience which actually demands some degree of 'work' to completely understand and master, which is completely baffling to me, since this is probably the aspects of video games (and generally existing, really) that I enjoy the most. Meeting and overcoming barriers is just 'fun', I don't know how else to explain that.

TL;DR: People are stupid and lazy, and everybody but me sucks.

You are probably giving it more credit than it deserves. There is a way to be tense without having clunky controls or combat. For one thing, is Amy stressful because of the situation the characters are in, or because you are constantly wrestling against the mechanics of the game?

I'm pretty sure the combat was deliberately made hard/lethal for you to engage in, otherwise, why'd you ever feel a need to avoid direct confrontation? I should point out that I haven't played Amy, but playing through Silent Hill 1, I was constantly dreading having to fight enemies because it was practically impossible to 'solve' the combat, ie. reach a point where you knew all enemies patterns/move sets and you would be able to just wade through legions of enemies without getting touched. You weren't supposed to fight every enemy in Silent Hill, but you had the option, which is what made the bad combat controls meaningful.

In Silent Hill Shattered Memories, there were no combat, and no enemies could be encountered when in 'exploration mode', which completely killed all tension, because you quickly realized that there was no 'penalty combat encounter' waiting around the corner to jump at you, and whenever you did end up in 'escape mode', it was usually fairly easy to escape the enemies.

I'm not saying having bad combat that the player is almost actively supposed to ignore is good game design per se, but I can understand the decision and I do think it helps make a game more tense. The other alternative as I see it would be to completely remove the combat, but I still think it's ok to include it as a 'mini game' that gives you a chance to redeem yourself if you failed at sneaking past an enemy. If direct confrontation is your last resort, it generally makes you feel more vulnerable and in danger, which I think is perfectly fine in a survival horror game, emphasis on 'survival', which to me at least means 'just barely making it through alive'.

Edit: Keep in mind I haven't played the game, so if you are consistently expected to actually fight enemies instead of avoiding them, then yes, the combat is poorly implemented, but I'm operating on the assumption that this isn't the case.

Not enough games get two out of ten although they deserve it, imo.

Now, if you go by the usual 7-10 scale, I guess it's too low for what the game provides - but the overarching point all reviewers agree on is that they don't want you to make the mistake of buying that game - using the scale symbolically in that way. Just to make sure everyone gets the message, give it a one/two.

It's another indication that the current accepted review scale is meaningless.

Well, for Amy's sake, I hope it gets an update like Hydrophobia did. Hydrophobia never seemed this bad to start with, IMO. It was made much better with the update too.

Hydrophobia: Prophecy on PC is actually a pretty decent action adventure game, especially for only $9 on Steam.

Days with no quick looks make me sad.

Also what was the realsies comment? I must have missed that.

I believe it was when Patrick claimed he died on purpose to show off the bad combat/checkpoint system, and then died again on his first fight when it was "for real".

I liked Vinny's reading of the dialogue more than the voice actor. I might be biased though.

Amy looks like the Hydrophobia of 2012.
You might be right.
I bought Hydrophobia when it was on sale and after the huge patch. I appreciated the ambition, but the execution was off. I definitely saw the potential there though and I hope they are able to continue with the story.

I love Double Fine, but they're going in such a bizarre direction, I hope they get back to a major project soon. The bombs in the ball pit were cute though.

Quick Look: Scarygirl (24:35) (Brad / Vinny)

They are certainly being polite about the game's flaws. I found it to be surprisingly bad. If you think the character designs are cool, you're better off playing the original 2D flash game that spawned the XBLA version.

Not sure why they felt compelled to rebuild the game with polygonal graphics anyway when the original Scarygirl flash game seemed to be all vector art and would thusly scale up to HD pretty easily.

Man... I kept starting to write something about that Happy Action Theater QL but then I kept deleting my posts because they read like I was channeling funkystudent.

I'll just leave it at that I was not into that QL for a few reasons.

Is one of them that you hate fun? Cause the HAT looks pretty cool to me, some pretty impressive demoing of what Kinect can do and seems like it's be a great thing to mess around with. Especially if you have kids.

Well, it is a reflection of their development team, I believe. Lots of young parents wanting to make something for their kids.

But yeah, I've mentioned this in the other thread. I look at these well-made games and sigh a little that Doublefine isn't investing that talent and creativity and craftsmanship into something that's for me.

Tell us how you really feel. I hate people holding back with their opinion.

I just want to know what Patrick's schedule looked like for the week.

Publish a 3 part treatise on the value of review scores on Mon - Wed.

Throw on a hot dog costume and attention whore on Thu.

Games journalism.

It was a silly quick look of a silly game, what were you expecting? Do you think hard-hitting journalism and seriousness would have made it a better quick look?

Well that was a nasty little attack. I thought it was funny and actually fit with the content considering the game and developers involved.

Yeah, I'm not begrudging them making kiddy games, that's cool, but I thought it'd be a while before they went back to doing that, not their very next game. They might just not want to take on a very long term project like Psychonauts and BL, but I hope they're cranking on something special.

IIRC they said at the end of last year that they're working on three unannounced titles at the moment tentatively for 2012, not including DFHAT.

Really? He can't be silly sometimes? Especially when looking at an incredibly silly product? Giant Bomb has always been like this.

Write and publish three additional news stories.

Record a 3 1/4 hour long podcast.

Record a Quick Look.

Ostensibly be preparing/researching news for future pieces.

Their office was also closed on Monday for MLK Jr. day, if you didn't notice.

Yeah how dare he take an hour out of his day to put on a costume for a silly video to entertain us. Which in case you hadn't noticed is a good part of what GiantBomb is about. I think the vast majority of people who go there these days think of it as an entertainment site first rather than a regular video game news source.

Wearing a durger costume is an integral part of any field of journalism.
